Semihelix Share Renovate

Of all the acts in Austin, a band that I’m always happier than not to hear from is Semihelix; they’ve promised a new 7″ before the year’s up, so we wanted to make sure they had your attention. While their last single was hitting some dreamy jangles, this one seems to peel it all back, driving the sweetness home in the presentation. For me, I absolutely love Geannie’s vocals here, particularly when they get dubbed for the backing vocals too. There’s a nice little sonic turn too, letting the track dwell in some late 90s rock n’ roll territory as it draws to a close, with an added bit of piano thickening up the mixture here. We’ll keep you posted when we know more about that 7″!

Dancer Share Love Video, Announce New EP

If you haven’t caught on to Dancer at this point, you’re likely missing out on some of the best music-makers in the the UK right now; you’ve got members of Nightshift, Robert Sotelo and more combining to bring this brand of post-punk your way. Honestly, there’s something in their craft that sounds like a more pop-centric brand of Life Without Buildings. The vocals have that vibe where they feel almost distant, though they clearly have that melodic draw that keeps you focused. Circling around the vocals are these angular riffs that sparkle and twist around a thick rhythmic groove. They’ve just announced the As Well EP, which will be out on October 13th via Gold Mold Records.

Feeling Figures Share Movement Video

On their last trip around the singles market, Feeling Figures offered us this brooding bit of indie rock that felt like it had drifted from the Pacific NW all the way over to Montreal. This go round, well, they’re adding in a bit more “movement,” should I say, bringing this frantic energy that kicks off a bit of riotous bounce. Personally, I love the way the guitar lines seem to be work in opposition, one sort of meandering about in the mix while the other pairs with the rhythm section to drive the song forward; they somehow meet and fuse from time to time, creating this synergy that livens the vibe. Plus, the vocals have this almost maniacal how, pushing this snotty playfulness that I absolutely love. Spend some time here, and grab Migration Magic from K/Perennial Death on November 24th.

Fleur Bleu-e Release New Single

We covered the first single from French outfit Fleur bleu-e, and they’ve got another new tune that really feels perfect for a reflective Thursday listen. It reminds me a lot of Bones Garage, the Israeli band we worked with on our label, sort of melding classical pop vocals with a dreamier, janglier guitar underbelly. Here, the vocals enter the picture first, with a sort of warped guitar echoing in the background; it allows you to kind of relax as the melody laps at your ear. With continued patience, the song begins to reveal itself with sharper guitar notes that playfully tickle your ears and ask for you to dive into the depths of the band’s sound. Braden Lawrence Shares I Don’t Wanna Die in Texas

You likely know Braden Lawrence as part of The Districts, but for now, he’s stepping out on his own to release his own LP, When You Lose the Light. On the latest single, there’s definitely a bit of hyperbole running through the lyrical work, though the story has its roots in a dying van on the road between Santa Fe and Dallas. For me, I love the way the sliding guitar shoots across the background, bending at the turn while Lawrence and backing vocalist India Coombs do their part to make the listener swoon. There’s something about their interplay that reminds me of a distant Rilo Kiley, albeit through a more modern folk twang. Plus, you get lots of great video footage here, which should encourage you to grab the LP; it’s out September 29th via Anxiety Blanket Records.

Uni Boys Share Let’s Watch a Movie

I’m so glad that power-pop is making a full on come-back nowadays. Walking the line between anthemic arena-rock hooks and high-octane riffs is right up my alley. Cali’s Uni Boys are currently one of the best at bringing back they style, and their latest video rocks this infectiousness that begs for you to turn things way up in the speakers and let loose. There’s little vocal hiccups in the syllable delivery, reminding me of a more polished Joey Ramone, with the rest of the group adding in their backing voice to really pump up the savory flavor here. Plus, the video makes it seem like they’re having a ball, which make the group all the more endearing. They’ll drop Buy This Now! on October 13th via Curation Records.

Blue Ocean Share Ode Video

There’s never a bad day to run a track from Blue Ocean, especially as the noise in my head could use some noisy accompaniment to clear it all out. On the latest single you get this disorienting wash of feedback and atmospheric warbling, seeping atop a quiet and steady little beat in the background. Murky vocals texture the song with faint melodies from the upside down, buried deep within the confines of the atmosphere. All of it gets the glorious video accompaniment, taking viewers on a fantastic ride that doubles-down on the stretched emotions presented in song. You’ll get this song on the group’s new LP, Fertile State, out October 13th via Slumberland.

Latest Single from Bodies of Divine Infinite and Eternal Spirit

When I heard the first track from the forthcoming Bodies of Divine Infinite and Eternal Spirit, I was fully expecting an LP of pummeling psychedelia. But, on their latest single, things seem to have completely changed, which is fitting for a record where each song is named after various settings/moods. This one is completely peeled back, offering listeners the rawest form, with the video focusing entirely on Daniel Ward’s voice atop a very lightly strummed guitar. The rest of Bodies quietly join in to add a layer of light during the chorus, but you might miss it on first runs, as it’s just the faintest bit of nuance to this really stunning tune. Bodies release All the Songs I Know About Fire on October 6th via Dinosaur City Records.

Paws Share One Nation Under Dog

If there’s a general feeling in the world, it seems to revolve around our future and our fears for what comes next for humanity. Paws, on their latest single, have captured that anxiety and built it up into the perfect piece of swelling pop rock. Personally, I’m a sucker for the way huge riffs and smashing drums rock you right into the track, before the riffs get peeled a way to reveal a warmed vocal driving home the tune’s melody. Backing vocals buoy the hook too, allowing the lyrics to really resonate with the listener as the band question our decisions as humans “under dog.” New single pops up on Paws new self-titled LP, out October 27th via Ernest Jenning Record Co.

 

Mildred Maude Share Single ft. Lorena Quintanilla

It seems like Lorena Quintanilla has officially arrived in my algorithm, as the Lorelle Meets the Obsolete singer has been popping up all over my feeds lately…this time lending her voice to the new single from Mildred Maude. In working on recordings, the band found that felt “kind of senic,” almost cinematic in nature, which led them to the decision to invite Lorena to lend her voice to these tracks. The drums are anti-propulsive here, serving as the track’s heartbeat as the sonic structure ebbs and flows, matched by the technicolor wash of the video. Quintanilla’s voice rides those crests, sort of lapping at the edges of your ears, back and forth, teasing you to immerse yourself in the confines of the tune. You’ll hear this track on the band’s new Microclimates EP, out October 27th via Sonic Cathedral.
