Seablite Announce Lemon Lights

Another day and another dollar I’ll likely have to send to Mt. St. Mtn., particularly now that they’ve announced a fresh new LP from Seablite. Although they’ve sprinkled in some singles and an EP, we haven’t had a proper LP since 2019, so I’m excited to hear what’s finally coming our way. And, after spending several minutes running through the new single, I really like how they’ve come out. Sure, there’s some dreamy/gazey moments that are still wrapped in there, but something about the vocals really has me leaning towards those 90s alternative rock vibes. It’s a nice twist, allowing the band’s murkiness (also there in the video) to hang in the air, while still driving home this pop aesthetic they seem to have perfected, letting the hip kids indulge from all the various angles. Lemon Lights is out on September 29th!

Mint Field Announce Aprender a Ser, Share Video

Seeing as I spent a lot of time with Estrella del Sol‘s LP earlier this year, I can definitely hear where Mint Field‘s sonic shifts in sound might have sprouted. But, that being said, even their psychedelic rock from their early releases felt like it was touching on more of an explorative or ambient brand of the genre. This single embraces this sort of musical dispersion, like you’ve immersed the notes in water and they begin to drift towards the edges of the track. Yet, they’re all tethered by this tribal beat, echoing, thumping in the distance, holding the song in place. All of this space is there, setting up the mystic tones of the vocals, almost like the last gasps of air, which may tie into the track’s title “El Suspiro Cambia Todo.” They’re taking a breath, so it seems, letting the music take them whichever way it can go; this is what we’re to expect from Aprender a Ser, out on October 27th via Felte Records.

Optic Sink Drop Glass Blocks Single

For me, I love a track that forces me to indulge, to let myself go and just be present in the musical moment, such as this new hit from Optic Sink. When you open the door to this tune, you’re hit by these thumping industrial beats, though left with plenty of space to allow your mind (and the song) to drift. Natalie Hoffmann (of NOTS) calls out near the two-minute mark, offering up this distant post-punk delivery that feels as if its got icy cool running right through it. We get to journey through the song, letting the band build and fold textures into one another; there’s a weighted heaviness at times, and other times, they employ space to keep the playful side alive. They’ll be dropping Glass Blocks on September 8th via Feel It Records.

Sun June Announce Bad Dream Jaguar

Sun June‘s newest record should be absolutely huge, which comes as no surprise to those of us mucking about in the Austin music scene. Today, they announce Bad Dream Jaguar, with a single that serves as the perfect summary for their entire catalogue. If you lock into the rhythmic nature of the tune, it seemingly works as a sublime track to turn up as you head down the road; it has that movement naturally coursing through, particularly in the way the guitars are recorded too. But, with Laura Colwell’s vocals hanging loftily in the air, you can feel the oppressive heat of Texas and the need to just soak up the sheer size of the state. Personally, I love the noisy discord at the end, adding that devil-may-care attitude to their well-crafted blend of pop rock. Bad Dream Jaguar is out on October 20th via Run for Cover Records.

Bed Bits Announce New LP, Share Ceiling

Monday’s have a tendency to make you feel out of whack a bit, and what better way to start new music this week then this bewildering bit of bedroom pop from Bed Bits. There’s definitely a steadiness to the tune, be it the ringing guitars or the snappy cymbal work, but the little nuances lurking beneath really burrowed into my head today. There’s a buzzing sax as the guitars churn emphatic notes, only for a bit of a dissonant tone to kind of take control as Alex Edgeworth lets the vocals rain down carefully from the skies. There are moments when the speed of the guitars feels like its going to run right off, only for it to settle right back into the locked groove that enables the tune to run laps around the inside of your mind. As for the video treatment, the constant change of colors matches the vibrant musical textures, all of it tying together seamlessly. If you’re digging it, a self titled LP drops on September 27th via I’m Into Life Records.

The Exbats Share Like It Like I Do Video

It looks like 2023 is the year of really kick ass family bands; we had Big Blood‘s stellar record and now the Exbats have announced their newest LP for Goner Records. Inez Mclain and her father Kenny definitely have a penchant for looking back to the past for their sound, but I think Inez’s performance is so strong that it’s really hard to imagine her rocking out anywhere other than where we find her. That soulful voice is accompanied by some oohs and ahhs, but with the stomping beat and snapping guitar lines you can certainly feel a modern rock ethos. A fun tune to kick off your Friday! Song Machine is out on October 13th.

Echo Ladies Share Coming Home Video

Malmo trio Echo Ladies have been heavily featured on our site as of late, but there’s something a little different on their latest single. Previously, with other singles from Lilies, they’ve toyed with a dark nature, but on this one, they’ve completely crossed over towards the dark side. Every layer of the track seems weighed down by reverb and distortion, building this huge wall of noise that surrounds Matilda’s voice. And, try as she might, the vocals can’t escape the dark grasp of the tune, with the vocals almost pleading to escape this noisy, musical cage; it’s the perfect little pop contrast to make sure you fall in love. Lilies is out on September 8th via Rama Lama Records.

Playful Pop from the Cowboys

As of late there’s been a shitload of posturing about what’s cool and who’s cool in the scene or whatever you call it, but when you hear this track from the Cowboys you’re reminded that pop music supersedes all that bullshit; it’s about joy and frivolity, which is exactly what you get here. A stomping keyboard line sets up a ska nod (just me) that gives the track this insane bounce that will likely let you jump around the room joyously. Then you hit that chorus where the band turns the garage pop tendencies into a pure doo-wop swoon you’ll keep spinning on repeat. If you remember that rock n’ roll is fun and you can afford to take your life less seriously, then grab The Sultan of Squat, on August 25th via Feel It Records.

Another Teenage Fanclub Tune

Look, I don’t care how many posts I have, or how many other silly sites cover them, there’s never a bad time to cover Teenage Fanclub. This new single is a reminder of that, as they had me the instant that jangling strum hits you in the face. Operating with a steady circular stomp, the song twists into this stretched out melodic piece that reminds me a lot of sitting around my grandparents house listening to the oldies station. They’re creating pop music that’s just absolutely timeless, and I couldn’t be happier to know that Nothing Lasts Forever is closer on the horizon; it’s out on September 22nd via Merge Records.

Tony Jay Announces Perfect Worlds LP

Scenes across the US musical landscape tend to move from time to time, and as of the last couple of years, there’s not been a place I’ve gravitated towards, musically speaking, as much as San Francisco. Today, one of the Bay Area’s biggest labels announces a new release by one of the best bands; Slumberland Records will be releasing the next Tony Jay LP! Now, who is Tony Jay? Well, rumor has it that the band is loosely tied to Michael Ramos of Flowertown, but he’s not singing here, so perhaps the vocals have been leant to video director and Cindy powerhouse, Karina Gill? Most importantly, this song feels like that perfect late night lullaby; it hangs in your brain, allowing you to walk between that realm of reality and deep deep sleep. While it all starts with soft vocals over a subdued beat and a ringing guitar note, there’s a turn to a steadier strum that changes the melodic nature, and it will most certainly take your breath away. Look for Perfect Worlds to drop on September 15th.
