Tony Jay Announces Perfect Worlds LP

Scenes across the US musical landscape tend to move from time to time, and as of the last couple of years, there’s not been a place I’ve gravitated towards, musically speaking, as much as San Francisco. Today, one of the Bay Area’s biggest labels announces a new release by one of the best bands; Slumberland Records will be releasing the next Tony Jay LP! Now, who is Tony Jay? Well, rumor has it that the band is loosely tied to Michael Ramos of Flowertown, but he’s not singing here, so perhaps the vocals have been leant to video director and Cindy powerhouse, Karina Gill? Most importantly, this song feels like that perfect late night lullaby; it hangs in your brain, allowing you to walk between that realm of reality and deep deep sleep. While it all starts with soft vocals over a subdued beat and a ringing guitar note, there’s a turn to a steadier strum that changes the melodic nature, and it will most certainly take your breath away. Look for Perfect Worlds to drop on September 15th.

Diners Release Someday I’ll Go Surfing

You ever come across a voice and it just feels like somehow its speaking to you? Well, each time I press play on a track from the new Diners LP, I can’t help but think of Blue Broderick’s vocal charms. Musically, there’s this sweet simplicity, with the focus stemming on the steady chug of those twinkling guitar riffs; it makes sense that the new LP was produced by Mo Troper, as this track completely builds along similar Troper territory, twisting good old fashioned rock styles into undeniable hits you can’t get out of your head. Classic pop rock never goes out of fashion, especially when its executed this well; Domino is out August 18th via Bar/None Records.

Activity Share I Saw His Eyes Single

Monday is generally thought of as the start of the work week, and I feel like Activity have created the perfect song that encapsulates that day and unfolds just as the week does. Carefully, the track opens, almost as if you’re rubbing the sleep from your eyes, little creaks of strings and ambiance hanging in the distance. Beneath, you can feel a rising tension, moving towards the next moment (or day), with the drums picking up pace and the guitars churning out a more dangerous mood. You get this back and forth, quiet and subdued, then bursting back into the swelling bit of noise. If you’re digging on it, the band drop Spirit in the Room this Friday via Western Vinyl.

Tele Novella Share Broomhorse Video

Dear Natalie and Jason…I’m sorry I missed this single last week. For the rest of you, please please spend your time with Tele Novella. The band have long been one of the strongest acts representing the Austin scene, but if I’m being frank (hello, its me, Frank), this new stuff is fucking amazing. I feel as if they’ve really honed their craft, and with Danny Reisch and Jason working together on production, this feels like the best bit we’ve gotten. It’s a brand of baroque pop that lately seems out of fashion, but its execution, along with the accompanying nod to Harold and Maude, have left me pretty floored. I love the chorus, where Natalie’s voice just blossoms, aided by a subtle bit from Jason too. This is just too good to not press play immediately. They release Poet’s Tooth via Kill Rock Stars on October 6th.

June Jones Signs With Chapter Music

When I look at labels that I love, one of the one’s I modeled ATH Records after (in my mind at least) was Chapter Music. The label, partially through our site, was perhaps known for great Aussie guitar pop with acts like Crayon Fields or Goon Sax. But, if you dug in deeper you’d see the label’s affinity for an array of artists from all walks of life, like their newest signing June Jones. “Good Girl” operates with this hyper pulse that’s definitely infectious, tugging you into the pulse even as the vocals come across with a bit of steadied calm. Every time I press play, I imagine what it’d be like if Stephin Merritt wrote club bangers, so I’m glad there’s an artist like June Jones to fill that void. Fall into those electropop vibes below.

Dabda Announce Yonder EP

Feel like struggling in the middle of the week is not an option, so why not start your morning by rocking out nice and loudly to this fresh track from South Korea’s Dabda. You get a furious introduction to the band, as they spring towards a jangling swirl of distorted guitars, akin to the British pop punk scene. Then, they peel it back, letting the guitars take on a bit of space while the rhythm section and the vocals bring about something that feels a touch calmer. Guitars shuffle in and out, hitting lots of little math-y notes as the drums roll and the vocals crest and soar emphatically. All of that and you’re only halfway through the track, as the band trace back, building in more noise and distortion attached to the melodic notes they’re banging out. The group will release their Yonder EP on August 25th via Electric Muse.

Pip Blom Share Dance Floor Banger

Make no mistake about it…as much as I love obscure little indiepop bands and weird guitar music, I definitely love to hit the floor and shake it up with my old lady; this perfect Pip Blom tune is going to have us spinning around our living room with our kids all night. The track slinks in, with this fluttering groove and the vocals from Blom’s partner Willem Smit of Personal Trainer. Towards the end of the subtle verse, Blom enters and the track explodes into this joyous bounce that keeps you stomping your feet, throwing your hands in the air as you let go of your inhibitions. Back and forth, back and forth, the song hitting you hard, but giving you brief moments of respite. Expect big things when the band drop their third LP, Bobbie, on October 20th via Heavenly Recordings.

The Garment District Ready New LP

Our friends over at HHBTM will be releasing a new record from the Garment District (Jennifer Baron of Ladybug Transistor) this September, and there’s been a delightful single fluttering about you would likely enjoy. There’s about a minute of ambiance, opening the video and flirting with imagery, but, it just seems to be hanging on the edges, eventually fading away to let the song run in with this mixture of bounding pop and psychedelia; singer Lucy Blehars voice shines through it all, hitting these crystalline notes that land perfectly in the mix. The track moves back and forth between bits of softly curled elegance and that stomping psych boogie, so you get all my favorite pieces tied into this musical trip that rewards time and time again. If you’re interested, the band drop Flowers Telegraphed to All Parts of the World this September, so grab it HERE.

Emma Anderson (Lush) Announces Debut LP

It seems weird that someone with the pedigree of Emma Anderson is just now releasing her debut solo record, but seeing as I love those Lush records, I’ll gladly spend some time with a songwriter I feel like a lot of folks have overlooked. According to the press release, it seems Emma has been sitting with a lot of these songs since the reformation of Lush, but it took some encouragement for her to take them up again as a solo artist. Honestly, this seems like it fits perfectly into the climate of the current times; the texture alone feels like its carefully lifting Emma’s voice into the listener’s ears, filling in everything behind the careful jangle and churns of guitar. It’s crazy too, as this just feels timeless in a sense, like its rooted in nostalgia, yet updated to meet the masses in the middle. Sonic Cathedral will release Pearlies this October.

Who Is She Share 96 Ghouls

Who Is She is going to be on everyone’s playlist this week I reckon, as the band’s a supergroup made up of members of Chastity Belt, Lisa Prank and Tacocat, leaving us with the impression that there’s no way you can’t like this! You immediately get this bob and weave from the bass line as you press play, flirting with that sort of frantic post-punk as the guitars knife their way into the picture. Two vocal pieces impact your listening, with a sedate vocal in the front of the mix, while you get an emphatic group chant jumping in to punch up the style. I’ve only heard one track, and I know I’ll be grabbing their Goddess Energy LP; it drops on August 25th via Father Daughter Records.
