RVG Return with Common Ground Video

I am back with another piece in my ongoing series titled “Everything That RVG Does;” today, we have the latest video from the Aussie group’s forthcoming Brain Worms album. When I first heard this song, the guitar tones caught my ears instantly; they take on those Oceanic ringing notes perfectly. But, Romy drops in this great tonal change at the 1:39 mark, and I have to tell you that it’s one of those powerful moments you might not even notice until the 3rd or 4th time through. Blink and you’ll miss it, so go back. Honestly, the space left in this song to fill with emotive vocals really does the trick; it’s one of my top two tracks on the record. Laurence-Anne Announces Oniromancie LP

Wanted to kick off this Wednesday with a bit of spooky pop vibes, and Montreal’s Laurence-Anne is the perfectly bewitching pop spectacle to accomplish that feat. For starters, the announcement of the new Oniromancie LP comes with this silhouette video, already building to the mystery surrounding the artist’s work. Then, once you press play, you’re greeted by these warped vocal samples, disorienting at first, then moving into more traditional fare. That groove dropping in had me, setting up the vocals for this sort of tumbling delivery that never seems to give you a chance to breathe. Cool vibes only on Wednesdays; Oniromancie is out September 9th via Bonsound.

Balmorhea Share Latest Video, New Conditions

Knowing that there is a new Balmorhea album on the horizon is always an exciting time of the year in Austin; you can expect the band to pop up somewhere interesting to share the album and the experience…which is always equally as special as the music. On this new single, I love the way the song builds in slowly, tinkering with pianos before you even get a bit of percussion to liven up the feel. Those moments are fleeting, and purposefully, letting the song ebb and flow, allowing the listener to sort of move in and out of consciousness as the song unfolds before them. Pendant World is out on June 16th via Deutsche Grammophon.

Far Caspian Releases New Video for Own

One of the modern musicians shape-shifting with almost every song is Far Caspian; Joel Johnston’s approach to indie diversity usually keeps listeners on their toes. Throughout the newest single from his forthcoming LP, Johnston takes a mellower approach than the last tune we heard; this one trickles, running over a perfect guitar chord that recirculates and charms as you listen. For me, the stuff that makes Joel’s work standout is the attention to detail; the light strings and the ghostly backing vocals add the perfect depth of texture to the tune, which is one of the reasons I love Johnston’s construction practices. The Last Remaining Light will be out on July 14th via Tiny Library Records.

Special Friend Release Selkie Video

Is it a seal or is it a human? Well, depends on how you look at the mythological Selkie, the title of the latest single from Special Friend…but who am I to decided for you? What I can tell you is that this might be the tastiest bit of pop music you’re going to hear today. I was hooked with the guitar notes immediately, setting me up to swoon later once the duo opted to combine their voices so seamlessly. In doing so, there’s something in the sound that seems like a lantern floating through the sky, filled with the promise of tomorrow. There’s this tonal switch and string arrangement after the two minute mark that cut right to the core, so I fell in love with the tune all over again. The group will release Wait Until the Flames Come Rushing In via Skep Wax, Hidden Bay and Howlin’ Banana on June 27th.

Wombo Share Slab Single

Listening to last year’s Fairy Rust LP from Wombo reminded me that there’s still plenty of room to play with the constant structures of modern tropes. They took that sort of new reimagining and made it a bit more dreamy, a bit more space-age; they continue that here with the newest single from their forthcoming Slab EP. There’s still that pulse from the bass lines, but there’s a metallic nature to the way the guitar notes stab and push throughout. For me, the vocals always bring that even further into focus, taking a little of that indifferent cool and filling it with a bit of the ethereal and mystic. Just a slight move left, but one I love; look for the Slab EP to drop on June 9th via Fire Talk.

Panic Pocket Release Get Me Video

Having known one another since childhood probably plays a huge part in the Panic Pocket‘s latest single; the anthemic chorus seems more like a plea to a life-long best friend more than anything. The duo lock in to one another musically, hitting these crunchy riffs that sit atop sharp percussion, letting the gritty punch provide some solid rhythm like you might find in an old Breeders tune. Once the aforementioned chorus drops in, there’s a bit more bite from the vocals, letting listeners know the band are capable of walking that tight rope between catchy pop and punk mentality. It’s a fun tune that should put the group on your radar; look for Mad Half Hour on May 26th via Skep Wax.

Johanna Heilman Announces When We Were Electric: Shares Title Track

Really getting lost in the moment these days, and when I hit play on Johanna Heilman‘s new single, it didn’t take long to get there. All of the guitar tones have this sort of lonesome dreaminess, like your watching your soul leave your body as the the notes trickle quietly through your speakers. Johanna’s voice has it’s own sparkle, feeling both fragile and seeping; it’s message about being weary of nostalgia tends to provide further depth as the notes seem to crest and fall at your feet. Another mesmerizing single from an Austin artist this week; look for When We Were Electric on June 30th.

Girl Scout Share Monster Video

When we caught up with some of our friends from Sweden during SXSW, they all joined us and we headed over to catch the first set of the festival by Girl Scout; the band smashed it, and we all were bobbing our heads to the huge hooks. Listening to their latest single, you can hear similarities to bands like the Beths, bridging pop rock and bedroom pop to build these huge “monster” jams that are perfect for singalongs. There’s still this wicked tenacity that shines through, letting us know that just because you can hear the hook, doesn’t mean you can’t rock it out really really loud. Turn this up as we all await the band’s forthcoming EP, slated for release in the Fall!

Wireheads Share Hook Echo Video

I was immediately hooked on the latest track from Wireheads, particularly when that riff just drops in out of the ambiance and delivers that crunchiness I crave. Having been mostly quiet since 2017’s Lightning Ears, this definitely seems like the band have returned without missing a beat, keeping that edge and tenacity in the songwriting. What I appreciate here, however, is that you get this little curl of cool from Dom Trimboli’s steadied vocal delivery; the band add backing vocals in just the right spots, allowing the syllables to latch onto the faintest hook and keep pop elements lurking in the group’s work. Sure, there’s jagged edges on the surface, but crack through and you’ll hear a band centered on writing playful pop songs like all the rest! If you’re digging it, then be sure to check out Potentially Venus, the newest album out June 23rd via Tenth Court Records.
