The Prize Announce In the Red

If your coffee hasn’t kicked in, and you find your in need of spiritual fuel, might we suggest the Prize? The Melbourne bunch just announced their long-awaited debut record, and supplied us with this straight ripper to get our feet under us. While you’ll hear a lot of folks labeling this as power-pop madness, it reminds me of the Donnas, using the same formula, so kind of falls in the punk vein for me. There are chords buzzing with a quickened beat from the drum work, and all of it leads you to this huge chorus that rains melody upon the listener. They’ll be releasing In the Red September 19th via Anti Fade and Goner Records.

One More Wombo Track

The newest LP from Wombo is going to be out this week, and based on my coverage up until now, you can clearly tell I’m digging what they’re putting down. Yesterday, they gave us one final sneak peek into Danger in Fives, and it’s another track that shows them toying with various musical constructs to build this flowing pop masterpiece. In a sense, they have this same artistic approach as early Deerhoof, kind of jagged and off-kilter, but it’s magically tied together to sound like the world of music was meant to sound that way. Don’t forget that the new LP is out Friday via Fire Talk.

Weakened Friends Return with NPC

One of the record on the horizon that I’m absolutely begging to get my hands on is the new LP from Weakened Friends, and today they give us another glimpse at what’s in store…with a little help from Buckethead! With the front half of the tune delivering the band’s mastery of classic pop rock, they threw in a plot twist that completely caught me off-guard, slowing to a crawl as they await the setup for Buckethead’s guitar solo; it makes sense that they’re manipulating the expectations, especially on a song that deals with the concept of a pre-programmed lifestyle. Their new record Feels Like Hell will be ripping through your speakers on October 9th, courtesy of Don Giovanni.

Maura Weaver Shares Prince + Readies Strange Devotion

The latest single from Maura Weaver is going to feel like somewhat of anomaly in the masses of the current indie climate; it’s got an opening that hits on dreamy bedroom pop, akin to various other acts, but then goes completely left turn and hits on on the alt rock vibes of the 90s. It’s a brilliant switch, catching the listener off-guard, and crafting just enough DIY aesthetic to pull the cool kids along into the delightful world of pop music. It makes sense that there’s nods to Liz Phair, as you can hear that sort of crossover magic, where folks from all walks of listening habits will pine over this new single. It’s all accomplished with a sincerity that feels like Maura is just writing on their own terms and finding what feels right; it all feels gloriously right, so Strange Devotion should be out on September 19th via Feel It Records.

It Sound Announce New Record

Up in Seattle, It Sound has been quietly working away over the last several years, building these harrowing soundscapes that draw from various post-punk references. This video is from the new record, and you’ll hear those ghostly guitar tones and synthetic drum lines working their way in and out of this single; it feels cinematic in nature, more so than a lot of their peers, creating this sound that’s more thoughtful in the long-run. I just love the touchstones here of all my favorite sounds, with faint calls of “it’s called blood” bubbling up from beneath the mix. Look for It’s Called Blood to drop on October 10th via Seahorse Recordings.

Eli Carvajal Signs with Safe Suburban Home

I love when a label just falls in love with a record that may not fit our expectations, but still adheres to the label philosophy of releasing music you love, like the new pick up from Safe Suburban Home. They’ve mostly been playing with outsider pop like the new Autocamper LP (you should buy that!), but today they’ve announced the signing of Eli Carvajal, a UK artist that reminds me an awful lot of young Bon Iver. He’s got an interesting playing style using open tunings on an upside down right handed guitar (that he plays left-handed) so it creates this resonance in the notes that hits deep within your soul. There’s not too much else really added behind the strum and his voice, with only the slightest embellishment used, as there’s this clarity that sharpens the delivery, digging its hooks deep in the listener. Eyen Forever is out on October 3rd.

Piggietails Announce Self-Titled Debut

For those of you that have followed the Australian scene over the last however-long, there’s a distinctive sound that’s been omnipresent for the last two decades (and beyond); it’s a sound that has elements of Flying Nun and nods to Go Betweens all about, and perhaps tragically labeled as dole-wave. But, in the end, acts like Piggietails make it all worth it, as the charm of his style never fades. The group announced their debut LP, and it’s working with this really steady and snappy beat that allows for the circular jangling to get you caught up in your feelings. A softened vocal comes in, presenting you with this calmed effect that seems intertwined with the musical vibe, just kind of bobbing up and down on the rhythm. They’ll release Piggietails on September 19th via Spoilsport Records.

Joyer Announce On the Other End of the Line

You’re likely going to be hearing this song talked about a lot in the next few days, and that’s excellent news for Joyer. For us, that’s better news, as this new single comes with the announcement of their new LP, On the Other End of the Line. On my side, I’m totally in love with the vocals; I can’t put my finger on why I’m drawn to them exactly, but that tonal warmth has me completely wrapped up in my own feelings. I mean that first verse just drops in and floors me every damned time. They surround the breezy voice with these twanging guitars that sound right at home among us Texas folk…just another reason we’re fawning over here. The new LP will be out on October 24th via Julia’s War Recordings.

Retail Drugs Share Little Dog

Some songs you hear will haunt your conscious forever, which seems to be the case for Jake Brooks of Retail Drugs, as he’s had “Little Dog” bouncing around in his head for several years. As a listener, if you don your own set of headphones, you, too, will find the track’s magic will haunt you; I love the simplicity of the track and its somewhat off-kilter drumming. It kind of feels like a warped tape you discover in your attic, and find that you’re magically invested in its storytelling and magic. A little bit of backing vocals too add this textural depth that took me to a whole new mental space, so you can tell that I’m looking forward to rECKless dRIVing, which drops via Fire Talk/Angel Tapes on Friday!

Massage Return with Coaster

I honestly hadn’t thought about LA’s Massage in quite some time, though I’ll admit that I adored their last LP, Still Life. Well, after a little breathing room, the group have returned with a new record, Coaster, and we’ve got that delicious debut single from the record below. On my first few listens through the track, it reminds me a lot of the late-era Pains of Being Pure at Heart, where the guitars feel secondary in relation to the overall blanket of sound that washes across the room. It’s soft and sweet, though there’s a weight to both the lyrics and the volume, providing a boldness that balances the track perfectly. Such a welcome return; they’ll drop Coaster via Mt St Mtn/Bobo Integral/Prefect on October 9th.
