Greg Weeks Returns with If the Sun Dies

After stepping away from the scene for nearly two decades, Greg Weeks has returned with news of a new record, thus the below single coming your way. The light strum of the guitar is what drew me into the songwriting; it’s got that powerful emotive quality that makes you feel alive, or at least aware of what’s around you. Weeks’ voice has this quiet beauty to it, careful not to push itself away from the central melody that moves the track along. Greg fleshes out the entire track with these light flourishes of added instrumentation, carefully lifting the tune to your ears. If the Sun Dies will be out December 12th.

The Goods Announce Debut LP

It’s Friday, and the odds are you had a long weekend, good or bad or all of the above, so you need to breezy pop of the Goods in your life this morning. When the guitar came crashing into my speakers, I immediately felt the rays of sunshine looking in on me; the mood was enhanced by a stomping of classic pop drumming, pushing the pace and punch while driving home the harmonies. There’s an extra snappy bit popping off near the 1:30 mark that just crushes, so be sure you stick around for the whole tune if you want to max out your pop requirement for the day. Don’t Spoil the Fun is out on October 24th via Dandy Boy Records.

Marcus O’ Neill Shares Eternal Flame Video

Clearly I’m all about that garage pop structure today, with another morning nod to the genre courtesy of Marcus O’Neill and his cover of The Bangles classic “Eternal Flame.” If you weren’t aware that it’s a cover, you’d likely have no idea, as the style stretches about as far away as one could without forgetting the mentality of the tune; you do get a momentary little slow down a la the original mid-tune. It’s got a little bit of an R&B swagger to the garage style, which is one of the brilliant way O’Neill manages to make the tune relevant. This song features on the new LP, Bonus Extra Et Cetra, out October 3rd via Tall Order Records.

Greg Wheeler and the Poly Mall Cops Drop New Jam

If you are in need of a brash bit of rock n’ roll to get you out of your chair, then you’ll want to latch onto this new hit from Greg Wheeler and the Poly Mall Cops. Thematically the track is hitting at our inability to escape for our own well-being, as we’ve allowed corporations and government entities the ability to see everything we do (like watching a youtube video!). Musically, you’ll love it, as the track’s working with this heavy barrage of fuzzy riffs that drive and rush you through the track, only to open up these brilliant choruses that reminded me a lot of Jay Reatard, harsh yet soaked in sugar. This tune features on the new Slimephone Surveillance LP, out October 24th via High Dive Records.

Banti Buli Announces Stroll Down Pearl, The Night is Young

I’m a huge sucker for a gentle ballad, particularly if its overly playful or slightly left of the dial; I tend to think of Moldy Peaches at first when I think of this genre. Well, the new single from Banti Buli with his friend Ragu, is much like that, using a really light strum and gently overlapping vocals that seemingly flirt with stepping on one another. They fill the empty space behind with these light little touches and fluttering bird sounds, all of it matched perfectly to this drifting video that offers its own set of charms when matched up. This new song features on the new LP, Stroll Down Pearl, The Night Is Young, which comes out November 7th.

 

The Lovely Sparrows Announce I Still Picture You Running

While it’s been a minute or two since The Lovely Sparrows have dropped an official release, there’s no time like the present to drop a brand new record, which is just what the Austin outfit aim to do. Today we bring you the first single from the record, illustrating a continuous exploration of where folk music can go. In the first 40 seconds or so, you encounter this haunting ticking of a clock, anxiously building the tension as the guitars spin and twirl around in the darkened corners of the song. In fact, the way the vocal takes the high notes, then stretches it as they fall in tone seems to move the sound entirely away from folk, leaning more into a baroque pop that toys with a more ethereal mentality. That atmospheric mood embraces the loose themes of the tune, centered around songwriter Shawn Jones’ encounter with his grandmother’s haunted china cabinet. If you’re as happy as we are to hear the band is back, look for I Still Picture You Running this November via Abandoned Love Records.

Joel Cusumano Announces Waxworld LP

The Bay Area music scene is better because of the presence of Joel Cusumano, as he’s played in acts such as Sob Stories and R.E. Seraphin. But, he’s out on his own with his first solo LP, a record which came after Cusumano dealt with debilitating OCD. That process informed the writing process, at least in terms of the subject matter, where the record deals more with Joel’s “growing unease in a world of unrelenting flux.” Still, Joel’s not going to shy away from including hooks and fun in his music, as you can see and hear in the video below. Thumping drums and a guitar that seems to pulse with a new wave personality create a sentiment that seems almost celebratory, so we’ll jump on and cheers Joel as we await Waxworld; it’s out on October 24th via Dandy Boy Records.

Washing Machina Drop Debbie Lost Her Mind Video

If you’re looking for a little bit of an indie rock classic, then might we suggest trying out this brand new tune from Sweden’s Washing Machina. The group have just released this brand new single, and to my ears, it kind of takes the softer edge of what Superchunk have been doing; there’s more melody, as one would expect from a Swedish group, offering up more of a pop sentimentality. In terms of the subject matter, the band are discussing everyone’s best friend, the person who pushes themselves to the limits, fun at first and a disaster in the end…don’t be a Debbie (note to self).

Immersion Share Push the Rock

While the new Immersion album is set for release next week, they’ve treated us with another look under the proverbial hood, and this one lives in two parts of my brain. Musically, there’s this electronic march that pulses, then opens up to this vibrance; it builds tension and feels constantly like its about to erupt into beautiful madness, only to show restraint and remain tempered. But, speaking of madness, well, that’s the state of the world, as the song mentions with the line “a world gone mad.” The duo question what we can all do, staring down the barrel of the gun (sorry for the cliches!) and encouraging us not to run scared like all those folks who left X for BSKY; you’ve got to stay and create, push back, and in this case, “push the rock.” WTF? is out next Friday

Brash Pop Rock from Trash Man

I know that we’re all currently swooning over neo-grunge acts, but while I get the fad, I’m really loving the continuance of great big guitar rock, like this new Trash Man single. The verses fit into the modern mold, almost quietly working the riffs into a frenzy, but the explosion in the chorus is where its at for me. The vocals hit the perfect soaring pop rock notes, not too far off from a Rivers Cuomo impression (when we all still adored him), so you can take a bit of punk and mash it up with just classic guitar songwriting. Look for this track on the Cool Until It’s Not EP, which is out October 10th via YK Records.
