Daisies Share Goin’ In Circles

When we last checked in on Daisies they were sharing a very 90s college rock pop gem that I couldn’t get out of my freaking head! But, now, they’re branching into a bit more of a trip-hop territory, and I don’t mind it one bit here. I’m still standing by the vocals as the central force in this tune, though I’ll admit, the voice gets a lot of freedom here to explore the outer regions of the tune. Which, is really where the band gets interesting, bringing in bits of ambiance and exploration, stretching the boundaries of where their peers are at, whilst still maintaining a certain semblance of great pop. Great Big Open Sky should be a sure-fire winner when it drops on May 12th via K Records/Perennial.

Pulsating Pop from System Exclusive

One of my favorite labels Mt. St. Mtn. just sent over this track from System Exclusive, which I thought would be a good share with you all on a Friday morning. Immediately upon pressing play you’re sucked into that throbbing beat, pulsing with this dark fuzz as drum hits and synth lines accentuate the vibe. It’s all about a nice little bit of musical scaffolding, building a textural layer that allows the vocals to seep out. The digitalization in the video adds another layer to the group’s sound, operating somewhere between disco pop and arty punk, so of course I’m all over it. If you dig, the band drop the Party All the Time EP on April 21st.

Troller Share New Single + Video

Personally, Troller is one of my favorite ATX bands, as they continue to evolve their sound, elevating their heavy electronic sound into something more broad and experiential. This brand new track from their forthcoming LP is doing that, quickly building a foundation that unfolds and blossoms for the listener as the track progresses. This song unfolds, then turns left, unfolds further, then turns back on itself, like the song’s alive, taking shape on its own terms. Definitely a song that has my interest as I get prepared for the release of Drain, which comes out on March 26th via Relapse Records.

Washer Dropped Not Like You

Looking a little foggy outside my classroom window, so needed a little pick me up this morning, perfectly offered up by Washer and their latest single. It’s a furious puncher, hitting you with immediacy that pummels your speakers as it rips through with pounding drum snaps. The vocals begin with this indie curl, but eventually erupt with this ferocious growl that sets up perfectly for that cathartic release for both listener and singer alike. Their new LP is shaping up quite nicely, so that means you’ll want to grab Improved Means to Deteriorated Ends on April 28th when it drops via Exploding in Sound.

7ebra Share Lighter Better Video

During SXSW I was fortunate to catch 7ebra at one of their first shows; the band was a bit frazzled as the set-up was one of those challenging venue moments, but their performance still had this incredible charm that supersedes any nervousness or sound issues. Here you get a video performance with tons of candid footage of the twin sisters, but more importantly, you can hear the captivating sound they’ve created with minimal instrumentation, mostly working with Mellotron and guitar/vocals. Listening, you feel as if there’s much much more to the group, as they’re capable of building this amazing depth by layering the songs and adding harmonies in just the right places. Bird Hour will be released on May 5th via PNK SLM.

Low Praise Share Forget That Its Summer

It only took me a few seconds to latch onto this new track from Oakland’s Low Praise; I love the jagged guitar vibe that cuts through this one, and that bob-and-weave bass line doesn’t hurt one single bit. Once the song takes off after the maneuvering mantra, the track begins to really unfold into this post-punk bit of trance; I definitely hear some Wire tendencies in the way the vocals get delivered. But, for all the nods to their forefathers, the group also are willing to bang out some heavy grooves, which you get a glimpse of when they deliver their pseudo-chorus, crashing through the speakers as opposed to bobbing up and down. If you dig on it, the group are releasing Dressing on May 19th!

Teenage Tom Petties Share New AA Single

Teenage Tom Petties won us over with the self-titled LP they dropped, but they don’t miss a beat with their brand new punchy AA single. Both tunes on the single are anthemic jangling pop-punk, perhaps with more allegiance to punk. Honestly, “Posters” is precisely the style of pop punk that has me screaming at the top of my lungs as I mow the lawn and frighten the neighbors; the riffs are fast and furious, with a steady rhythm and lyrics you can easily sing too. Plus, the brevity of the singles make it easy to press play and run through them both again and again, just to memorize the hook-laden fun! Coming to us courtesy of Safe Suburban Home/Repeating Cloud.

Wares Return with Graceless Video

I remember walking around my neighborhood with WaresSurvival on repeat; it was such an incredible listen, abrasive and gorgeous all at once, so it was a nice surprise to hear a new single slide into my inbox. Like that early album, the band carefully dance around bold drama via Cassia Hardy’s vocals, though there’s always this hint at danger lurking in the background…and it hits here just after the 2 minute mark. While that moment packs a big punch, it maybe still seems tinted with hope, tucking the pop sentimentality just beneath the surface. Hopefully this single means the band are back working on more new jams!

Kay Odyssey Share On the Breeze Video

Our friends in Kay Odyssey dropped this great jam last week, but unfortunately got buried down in those millions of SXSW emails. Thus, here I am to harp on how great the band is, and maybe shine a little light on their hits! For me, the key to this tune is just this steady blast from the percussion; it sets the song in motion, giving it this near march vibe, allowing the psychedelic tendencies of the guitars to swirl all around while still pushing the track forward. But, just because you can stomp about doesn’t mean that the there’s not some sweetness here, as the vocal seem to take a nod from the song’s title, floating into the track like a bit of a breeze that just sort of rides the wave of the tune. Always great to have this lot pump out solid tunes!

Ghosts on TV Share Life in Plastic Video

The work of Finnish outfit Ghosts on TV can be disorienting, particularly if you let the beat of this tune distract you from the track’s meaty core. Drums are hit furiously, creating the blastbeat effect that makes you feel as if your speakers are torn. While I’ll admit it takes a moment for your ears to adjust, the song eventually opens into this beautiful stretch of shining pop. That, too, eventually fades, as the group continue on midtrack to explore a more post-rock territory, with thunderous drums meeting cascading guitar notes as they jettison off into the horizon. The group will release their self-titled LP via Soliti Music on April 14th.
