Island of Love Announce Debut LP

I’m new to the Island of Love train, but judging by their recent signing to Third Man London, I have a feeling, we’re all about ready to get a whole lot more from the group. Personally, I love that there’s this nostalgic alt-rock vibe to it, somewhere with some lineage to acts like Teenage Fanclub, though I can hear faint bits of math-ier rock going on in this. Plus, there’s furious riffs soloing too, which surely caught the attention of those associated with Jack White’s label. The single’s latter half is all about flexing those musical muscles, so I think you’ll be super impressed with the musicianship and in love with the hooks! Their debut self-titled LP comes out on May 12th.

Monde UFO Share Visions of Fatima

Mondays are all about easing into the mindset that you’re likely working your way through the rest of the week, good or bad. So, it’s nice to have a clean mental slate, which is where Monde UFO enters the show. The LA based band are exploring the intersection between DIY bedroom pop and the exploratory realms of jazz and bossa nova; it makes for a listen that ultimately feels both familiar and far far out of the norm. The opening moments trickle in carefully, almost like a meditative stance that’s just there to set the tone, building blocks that will be the foundation of the track. Vocals come in just after the 1 minute mark, a bit sedate and studied. There’s a bubbling up of pop structures just at the 2 minute mark, lifting the song’s spirit to your ears. My favorite moment comes at 3:36; the song opens up into this dreamy pop realm that immediately warms your ears, and just works in briefly before skittering off into the noisier compositional world. Their album Vandalized Statue to be Replaced with Shrine is out on April 21st.

Jonathan Bree Announces Pre-Code Hollywood

I feel like I’ve been riding solo on the Jonathan Bree train for a long while now, but maybe now that the New Zealand artist has caught the ear of Nile Rodgers (who plays and produces on this track!), maybe the rest of the States will get in on the vibe. News came our way yesterday that there’s a new full-length coming our way, and the title track accompanied said announcement. Bree’s voice still comes off like the coolest crooner you ever did see, but there’s a nice bit of sheen to the song this go round. It feels as if this has gone full on into a sort of disco-club, albeit run though the orchestral divination of Jonathan and his work. I just can’t get enough, so I’m stoked to hear the whole of Pre-Code Hollywood, out in April via Lil Chief Records.

Constant Smiles Share Gold Like Water

This new Constant Smiles stuff is sounding pretty spot on, in terms of where my listening brain is at currently. It’s just really subtle, well-executed pop songwriting, just a bit left of the dial. That light keyboard bounce that trickles in atop the bubbling beat is perfect; it creates this realm of relaxation, allowing me to sit back and let the song wash over “like water.” When the vocals cruise in, they’re lapping at your toes as you stand ashore, nipping at you with little twinkling melodies. A little percussive mix-up offers just enough differentiation to keep the song rolling interestingly along, particularly as more accompaniment pieces flutter in from the background. The band release Kenneth Anger on March 3rd via Sacred Bones, with some dates throughout March, including a stop at SXSW.

The Reds Pinks and Purples Announce The Town That Cursed Your Name

It wouldn’t be a year in music without at least one release by Glenn Donaldson, so it’s good news that there’s already a new Reds, Pinks and Purples LP on the books for Slumberland Records. Honestly, I can’t imagine a better song to live through the shit-show that is Austin right now; there’s this comforting feel in Glenn’s voice, sort of what I imagine some celestial being encompassing, wherever I end up. According to Donaldson, the entirety of the new LP is based around “living while also feeling called to make music.” I’m definitely glad he’s had that calling, as my record collection wouldn’t sound nearly as moving if Glenn’s work wasn’t catalogued accordingly. The Town That Cursed Your Name is out in March via Slumberland Records.

Frankie Rose Shares Sixteen Ways

If you expected the same Frankie Rose record to repeat the story’s of albums passed, well, you’re out of luck. The newest LP, as personified in this track below (and the first single) see Rose circling back to a pop ethos that drove her songwriting early on, with a heavy bent on the electronic vibe. There’s this almost club-induced vibe here, embellished by the digitalized video work accompanying the tune. Frankie’s voice is the gravitational pull, though the pulse of the song allows you to completely let yourself free in its universe; you won’t need a dance partner here, as this treat is just for you. If you’re digging on it, be sure to pre-order Love as Projection from Slumberland Records; it’s out on March 10th.

Bodywash Share Massif Central Video

You’re not going to want to miss out on this new Bodywash track, particularly if you’re dabbling the darkened corners of the post-punk industrial complex. For starters, the video’s really great, mixing in various components to build this futuristic world that meets up with the musical element. That music is both propulsive and noisy, though it remains wholly tied to the central melody that drives the band’s creation. Guitar notes swirl angularly, until they forced to skitter off into the noisier realms; the vocals lurk somewhere in the song’s shadows, careful not to outshine everything that surrounds them. The duo will release I Held the Shape While I Could on April 14th via Light Organ Records.

Bayonne Announces New Album

We haven’t heard from Austin artists Bayonne since 2019 and Drastic Measures, so it’s great to see the multi-instrumentalist and producer return to the fold. This tune incorporates driving rhythmic punches alongside sparkling little electronic notes; you put that next to the vocal recordings and you can practically feel the movement of the song itself beneath you. The song, much like the album itself, has a huge personal touch to it, as it was the last song Roger was able to show his father before his passing, using little soundbites from the family’s old VHS tapes. Temporary Time will be out this May!

Connections Release I Confess Video

Thinking about the previous Connections records, this new one sounds refreshing in a sense; it’s got softer edges and more melody; it almost feels like the group is one upping fellow Ohioans GBV by bringing in sharper hooks and more pop. But, you can be the judge on that one. I said what I said. You can’t deny the draw of the vocals in the front of the mix here, with jangling guitars echoing in each ear of your headphones and a steady bop on the drums hanging backstage. But, as soon as you’re swooning here, the song wraps up in a rush. It’s the perfect pop tease, and I can’t wait for Cool Change to drop on March 25th, courtesy of Trouble in Mind Records.

Silver Biplanes Share Searching for Your Name

You ever have one of those days where you wish you could just take a song and put it in your pocket and carry it around with you all day long? No? Just me? Well, today, I want this Silver Biplanes track with me wherever I go. It’s got this beautiful innocence to it, something that just seems both timeless and nostalgic all at once, matched by the video footage that accompanies the track. The melodiousness of the vocals is so sublime that it’s almost too sweet for your listening pleasure; you’ll be coming back in no time to listen to this tune again and again. Such a beautiful tune; you’ll find it on the band’s debut, A Moment in the Sun; it’s out this Friday via WIAIWYA.
