Mary Anne’s Polar Rig Join Rama Lama Records Roster

Our favorite Swedish label Rama Lama Records just announced a brand new signing to the label, Mary Anne’s Polar Rig. The group’s star has been rising since their debut single in 2018, with their 2021 album getting tons of buzz overseas. This new track has the band brandishing their blend of arty indie rock breakdowns with edges torn by the fuzz of guitar noise. Still, they’re equally adamant about providing huge hooks, which come in the clever lyrical delivery and melodic nature they spin through their web of explosive slacker-core. Keep an eye out on the band as one to watch!

Dehd Release New Bonus Single/Video

I’d likely consider myself a huge Dehdhead, as in Dehd, not “the Dead.” Today, the band just released a brand new bonus track they’ve added to their recent LP, Blue Skies…and added a video to boot! Here, the guitar tones had me immediately, it was the first thing that I gravitated towards. That then gets punctuated by these “oohs” that highlight the band’s melodic leanings, only to halt them before screaming into a raucous closing. Plus, the video reminds me of old school Good Charlotte, where the whole gang’s together in slo-mo having a blast in friendship and riding around (but on cycles not lowriders). Enjoy!

Hunting Cover Sparklehorse’s Piano Fire Single

Mark Linkous would have been 60 this last Friday, which was the day Hunting decided would be the perfect day to release this glorious cover of “Piano Fire.” Typically, I stay away from covers, but I very specifically picking up It’s a Wonderful Life back in college upon the recommendation of a friend, and I, too, found myself in love with Linkous songwriting. The band also chose to announce that they’ve got a new LP of their own titled You’ve Got Love coming your way this November, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Just a nice reminder of great songwriting, and a pretty spot on cover!

Simon Love Shares L-O-T-H-A-R-I-O Video

Back in April Simon Love dropped the pop rock treasure Love, Sex, and Death, etc., which we wrote about quite frequently leading up to the release. Well, good tunes don’t fade, especially when you’re willing to piece together stock footage, as Simon did to create a video tied to the chorus-less ditty, using “Shutterstock” found photos to create the song’s narrative. There’s a fun little interlude where Simon details a failed one-night stand, which was put together by Alexander Hale, and all of this to say, its a fun piece that lets us have another chance to refresh your love of Simon here today…and to remind you the new LP is now available via Tapete.

Eerie Wanda Share Sister Take My Hand

We continue our regular scheduled programming here to promote Eerie Wanda, as a fresh single, and the last before Internal Radio drops at the end of next month. This song’s a masterful bit of craft, toying with your ears the entire way through. Musically it’s almost absent, utilizing a muted beat and a bit of an ambient synth wash to build this bit of soundscape for the vocals. Ethereal to begin, the track eventually latches onto the pulse beneath letting the vocals push your experience further. A heavy vocal, then floating angelic tones wafting by, then the speakers seem to play tricks with your mind…an angel on this shoulder, one on that shoulder, rising and falling; this is the light that shines through the end of the tunnel, warm and beckoning. Internal Radio is out on September 23rd via Joyful Noise.

Matching Outfits Share It Keeps Happening Video

Berlin’s Matching Outifts will be releasing their debut LP this September, and the more I listen to this single, the more I’m just completely enthralled by their sound. There’s just something distinctively magical about singer Linnea’s voice; it often reminds me of Nadja from What We Do in the Shadows. There’s just so many different ways the vocals are spoken, or sung, or stopped then started. Just listen to the chorus, as the styles seem to all swirl and mix up with one another inside that brief moment. And, just as you’re sucked into the quiet joy of this song, it begins to climb just after the 2 minute mark, offering a brief, yet noisy, glimpse at what could be in store when they drop Band Made Out of Sand on September 21st via Kitchen Leg Records.

More Kicks Share Terminal Love

This track from More Kicks has been floating about for a few days, but I definitely wanted to make sure I had it up here, as someone’s got to carry the torch for Ted Leo going forward. I mean, just listening to the opening here, you can’t help but compare Sulli and Ted, even down to the way the song just drops right in and takes off running. And, once those riffs drop in they’re heavy and melodic, bursting through your speakers with these arena rock hooks that have you tapping your toes and trying to sing along as you learn the words. If you’re digging their power pop ways, Punch Drunk drops on September 16th via Stardumb/Dirtnap Records.

Cozy Slippers Announce New LP + Share Single

I hope you’re not afraid of bears, as this video is chock full of them, or at least one! But, the video comes with the joy of knowing that an LP is on the way from Cozy Slippers, with the added bonus that that’s just around the corner in October. As for the tune, it splits a nice balance between some psychedelically washed guitar grooves and a sugary sweet bounce from the vocals. Generally speaking, both styles are great, but its been a minute since I’ve heard them both balanced so seamlessly. Psycho-pop for the win? Whatever the genre, the self-titled release is out October 14th via Subjangle and Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten.

Scout Gillett Shares Slow Dancin

You’ve got your Sharons and Angels, but now, we’ve got Scout Gillett, and personally, I’m loving this new single, if only for its refreshing nature. Immediately, the pulse of the track sets the tone, which is striking, considering Scout wrote the tune initially as a country ballad, but mixed it up in the studio recording. Vocally, this is all over the place, and I mean that as an endearing quality. It’s got this soft spoken curl to it, but then it can just as quickly turn and burst into this incendiary soaring performance (that reminds me of Emily from Dehd, though I know it’ll get some Angel comparisons). It’s nice to have a new little twist in the mix here. No Roof No Floor is out on 10/28 via Captured Tracks.

Jim Nothing Share Fall Back Down

Our friends over at Meritorio Records consistently unearth great acts and bring them to my attention, like New Zealand’s Jim Nothing. The band play just on the edges of modern jangle pop, perhaps mellowed on the edges to have a softer feel to the natural bounce. This fits perfect into the style, as the vocals are delivered in that manner that’s just above spoken word, steady and just hinting at the melody; that, of course, gets a little aid by the sped up jangle of the guitar when necessary. In the Marigolds is destined to win you over when it drops on September 15th.
