Sniffany & the Nits Share Clam Chowder

Sniffany and the Nits have only recently popped up on my radar, but I’m completely entranced by the bands new single. Stylistically, the band take on a darker post-punk vibe, creating this cavernous world of snarling guitars and blackened tones, setting the scene for Sister Sniffany and her vocal barrage. Once Sister Sniffany enters the fray, her lyrics creep around every corner espousing a story of a housewife coming to grips with her husband’s need to be a swinger. At times, she’s snarling, while other points have her rolling with the song’s rhythm, but her performance is a warning of great things to come! Chorusgirl Announces Colapso Calypso

We’ve been waiting for Chorusgirl to follow-up 2018’s Shimmer and Spin, and it looks like Silvi Wersing has finally put the pieces together to present us with Colapso Calypso. Due to various circumstances forcing a move to Germany, Silvi has returned the band to a solo affair, but that certainly doesn’t seem to have impacted the songwriting. The first minute of the song is all about building the story, like a great author would do, tossing in some ringing guitar notes while the vocals capture the ethereal nature of dream pop. Once you breach the minute mark, drums kick in and the song is propelled into a more joyous realm, though the guitars are still tethered to their dream nature. Back and forth we go, between pensive and celebratory, all of it tying you to the song’s emotional core. Stoked to see the project back; the album will be out October 14th via Reckless Yes.

 

Ribbon Stage Share Playing Possum Video

Ok, so this Ribbon Stage tune’s been out for a few damned days, and I’m super late to it. But, if ever something felt like the natural connection between modern DIY and Sarah Records, I feel like its surely gotta be this New York outfit. At times, the video simply feels playful, like your best friends made it in their spare time between inside jokes and cigarette breaks. Still, there’s this natural infectiousness, an almost sure-fire sweetness that has you circling back for more and more. Not to mention, is that a Shop Assistants reference in the album artwork for Hit with the Most!? The group will release the LP in October via K Records.

Cam Bina Shares Saturn in June Video

Cameron Bina was an Austin staple, recording friends and helming Strange Mother, but he’s since found a home in Los Angeles, and is operating as Cam Bina. Today, we’re sharing a video for his latest single “Saturn in June,” which revolves around a circular guitar groove and these musical stretches that feel like they’re filled with desert gazes and astronomical flares. For me, the highlight comes when you hit the 2:26 mark, and Bina’s voice rises to the front, accompanied by the ferris wheel spinning from the background. Here’s to Cam and his great songwriting and to hoping we hear more soon!

CLAMM Share Something New

I remember when Iceage caught hold in the US, with everyone remarking about how Elias would stalk the stage, but, despite that attitude, the band never really felt dangerous to me (I still liked them though!). But, when listening to CLAMM, who bring in a heavy post-hardcore vibe, the band just feels dangerous. Jack Summers just feels like he’s ripping apart his vocals as he growls into the microphone, with Maisie emphatically joining through the chorus moments to punctuate the tune; it feels like a warning that we’re hurtling towards the end of humanity. The tune feels like a heavy march on your soul, discordant guitar work screaming all the while, and as the tune fades, you get that saxophone squeal leading to the song’s fadeout. Care, their new LP, will be out on April 19th via Chapter Music.

Living Hour Share Miss Miss Miss

Listening to Sam Sarty’s story in relation to the new Living Hour single, it’s easy to relate to the sentiment of missing something that symbolized your life or your love of a place or person, only to find it gone when you least expected; it seems to embrace a universal sentiment that only feels more real over the last several years amidst Covid and changing landscapes (esp. in Austin). All of this is set to a pensive vibe, one that kind of allows you to drift in and out of consciousness, as one would when waxing nostalgic about the past. You’ll hear jazzy little flourishes bubble up from beneath, as the band add depth with layering flourishes; you’ll ultimately find yourself enjoying the mental vacation the song encourages as it spins through your speakers. Someday is Today will be out on September 2nd via Kanine Records.

Jim Nothing Shares Yellow House Video

Those of you following the New Zealand scene, or anything Oceanic in nature, should keep your eyes on Jim Nothing, as this fresh single from their debut record is pretty near perfect. The riff work in the song has that sort of purposefully sloppy vibe, sort of chugging along haphazardly while the ship rocks around on the back of the rhythm section. Elements of this sound like they’re rooted in 90s pop rock, though you can hear other little DIY bits of flare in the way the vocals work together to build the melodic core. Just before you announce your devotion, the song calls halts, and you’re forced to rush over to the Meritorio Records/Melted Ice Cream sites and grab a copy of the group’s In the Marigolds LP…out September 15th.

Mamalarky Announce Pocket Fantasy

This snuck out yesterday, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t get behind this album announcement from Mamalarky. The band are constantly working, and it seems like that has led to a track that kind of unloads all the pressure of writing and recording by blasting out a joyous burst. Livvy’s riff work has this angular choppiness that feels like jumping about in your room, while the chorus just radiates an exhilarated bunch. You can see they’ve locked into that joy in the video as well, as the group are at their playful best throughout! If you’re digging it, Pocket Fantasy is out September 30th via Fire Talk.

Michael Beach Announces New EP

Our old pal Michael Beach is back at it, today bringing news from Australia that the songwriter will be releasing a new self-titled EP this Fall. Below we’ve got the the first sneak listen, with a track that feels like a feverish march on our sanity. For me, there’s really two sides to what Beach and company are doing. Musically, there’s this furious push and pounding rhythm, setting up the song as a sort of punk rock party anthem. But, Michael’s vocals are extremely steady in that mix, headstrong and just a melody above spoken word; it gives him this sort of rocker croon that slides right into the grooves. Stoked to see he’ll be touring the US this Fall, with a stop at Goner Fest…speaking of, Goner Records is putting out the EP along with Poison City on September 30th.

Soft Moon Share Become the Lies

It looks like someones been watching me dance-punch all across my house this summer, and it looks like that someone is Soft Moon! The band’s new video for brooding bouncer “Become the Lies” is filled with a lone dancing machine, dancing primally to the thumping beat that’s beneath the song. What I’m interested in from the musical side is how the song manages to avoid the trappings, brining in an angelic vocal where most folks would pummel you with a wall of noise. Don’t get me wrong, you can feel the weight of this song shattering the cones of your speakers, but the melodic nature still seems to supersede. Exister will be out on September 2rd via Sacred Bones Records.
