The Chats Drop New Video for Struck by Lightning

Don’t want to delve too far into the soft pop vibes of the day, so this track from the Chats hits just the right punk notes to keep it fun. The band’s got a sort of snotty snarl to them, playing that breakneck punk rock with a bit of call and response to the chorus. Everything here feels anxious and rushed, frantic almost, which ties into the video where they’re dodging lightning strikes inside their practice space. The band have always flirted with a sense of humor and a hard edge, which you might have caught on their High Risk Behaviour LP from 2020. But, this is new, and it rips, so turn it up and blast it out; be on the lookout for their American invasion in April/May!

Automatic Drop New Beginning Video

Rock n’ roll was meant to be fun, and if you ask me, no one seems to be having as much fun as Automatic are in their brand new single. Toying with the listener, it comes in with this sort of dream pop montage, but then immediately drops in this stomping beats and thudding bass. Once that gets going, the vocals get a little more energetic, like they’ve been called to arms, called to have an all out blast with you, the listener. And those heavy stabbing synth notes, before the snare claps, well, they make this a ripper. You’ll find this ditty on Excess, the band’s new record out this June via Stones Throw.

Wombo Drop Below the House Single + Video

When I listen to Wombo, I kind of get reminded of the early days of Deerhoof; it was exciting watching a band shift and change from chorus to verse to wherever they chose to go, and that’s what the Louisville trio call to my mind. This tune has this playful little vocal delivery, almost teasing you with pop sweetness and melody, but its rolling over a heavy drum bit that erupts with the guitars and elemental noise. Is it heavy? Can this be a pop song? I love that they’re just switching it up and playing with the formula by bringing their own vision. The song comes at you courtesy of Fire Talk.

Neutrals Prep Bus Stop Nights EP

One of our favorite Oakland outfits, Neutrals, are preparing to release the fresh Bus Stop Nights EP, and well, you should use Bandcamp Friday as the perfect time to preorder the new EP! It’s fitting I run this today, as it’s hitting the same rad notes you get from that earlier Mick Trouble track, hitting on those heavier jangle notes with clever vocal delivery that always makes this amateur rock enthusiast think of TV Personalities. The lyrical content is playful and humorous (we all have a Gary Borthwick–it might be me!), and the ripping bops on this tune stick in your head all day long. Dream, Ivory Share New Video

The Baello brothers, Louie and Christian, just sprung up recently on my radar with their Dream, Ivory work, and I’m absolutely salivating as the band continue to sprinkle tunes into the world. This latest single has this beautiful patience to it, using the crystalline guitar lines to create this ethereal atmosphere that feels cinematic in nature. As the tune progresses, the jangling notes absorb more textures, giving the track the slightest buoyancy and bop, though never overdone, bringing in the perfect balance between dreaming and play. The brothers will embark on a tour in June through the US, so keep your eyes peeled for dates!

Blue Ocean Share Summer of Hands Video

If Blue Ocean isn’t on your radar, you haven’t been reading this site! But, we can fix that right now by sharing the band’s brand new video for “Summer of Hands.” This tune comes from the group’s new Blue Ocean LP, which compiles remastered tunes from their stellar EPs (via Paisley Shirt) and puts them on one great release courtesy of Dandy Boy Records. If you’re new to the project, this is a perfect introduction, as they are one of the best at combining genres, as they do here by taking a jangling line of indie rock then covering it with this atmospheric squall of beautiful noise. The accompanying video here seems to match that, taking imagery of scenes near the blue oceans and coating them in a nice little bit of haze. Don’t wait for Bandcamp Friday, buy the LP HERE.

SXSW Interviews: No Swoon + Wait to See Video

Bright Light Social Hour Reimagine I Me Mine

I don’t usually rock a cover song, unless, like Austinites Bright Light Social Hour, the song totally reimagines things; below you can hear the group mixing up the Beatles “I Me Mine.” They take the song from its original vibe, and spin it into this funked-up dancefloor ready bouncer; the bass line just bobs and weaves, waving at you with that come hither finger to drag you onto that checkered square of vinyl. This tune fills in a gap in the band’s recording process while they flesh out their fifth studio album; they also have a slew of dates throughout Austin during SXSW, so if you’re around, get into the groove, just like this great cover!

LIFE Share New Single, Big Moon Lake

Looks like LIFE have a new record on the way, and I’m totally stoked with this new single; it seems like their sound is hitting just at the perfect time, as folks are clamoring for this brand of punk. Mez Green’s vocal delivery comes off in that very matter-of-fact manner, his voice matching up to the rhythm; I love when he playfully gets a little out there with the tonal notes on the delivery of the line “Don’t go to Big Moon Lake.” Plus, the rhythm section just crushes on this tune, with the guitars adding this harrowing shriek that builds on the band’s noisiness. North East Coastal Town will be out on June 10th via Liquid Label.

Ex Void Share No Other Way

You’ve got to imagine a band featuring members of Joanna Gruesome is going to have a lot of pressure to live up to their former name, and this new single seems to be the one that cements Ex Void as their own powerful force. As the song unfolds, it offers up a relaxed bit of casual indie rock, light jangles, but mostly just a burning fuzz of guitar work. For me, it was the chorus that really hits home, as I love the way the vocals rise and fall in tone, crashing into you with an emphatic punch that burrows into your mind. They’ll be dropping their Bigger Than Before LP in our laps on March 25th via Don Giovanni Records.
