Flower Graves Share Ociin Video

About a year out from the release of Living in Disguise, Flower Graves return with a psychedelic visual adventure…that’s not to mention the song’s sonic delight. The accompanying idea for this new single utilizes bright flashes and a technique that seemingly melts bright colors into one another, forming visuals along the way; leave breadcrumbs so you don’t lose yourself in the trance inducing jaunt. Turning to the musical element, you’re going to get rewarded there as well. Guitars cascade, creating this lush cavernous world; you can feel the guitars echoing through walls, sound reverberating through endless passages. The vocals share a similar attitude, densely coated, squeezing through crevices and calling to you like a haunted siren beckoning you to follow. It’s a pretty remarkable tune, and one we think you’ll fall in love with immediately; brought to you courtesy of Wallflower Records.

Stream El Lago’s Pyramid EP

With their 2017 album Colors, El Lago won us over with their elegant take on dream pop; it sounded refined and grown-up, something those with a sensible pop palate couldn’t pull away from. But, from the moment you press play on the Pyramid EP, you meet an entirely different beast. “Citadel” announces itself with this guitar squall ripping through the front of the mix, allowing Lauren to dance in with a spritely vocal delivery; she’ll add a softer touch reminiscent of the band’s early work during the song’s chorus. “Endless” has this sharpness to it, though you can’t turn your ear away from the dark texture lurking beneath the surface. “Moths,” to me, represent the band’s greatest musical leap; the structure and off-kilter rhythm almost craft this sort of angular post-punk spun through an arthouse lens; it’s the sort of tune that leads you down a path of reflection. “Pyramid” comes in to sort of remind you of where the band’s been, nostalgically looking back upon Colors. “Solo” is another of the calmer tunes, but in being such, it really highlights the power of Lauren’s voice; I feel like that’s something I took for granted, but this whole EP is full of remarkable moment after moment. It’s even set up perfectly, heavy and strong at the beginning, full of artistic flare and bold moments, but it narrows its focus on the band’s pop sensibility as it nears the final number, closing out with a nice 46 second instrumental at the apex. El Lago Return with Endless

I’ve been a huge supporter of El Lago since their first LP came out via Miss Champagne, and now, thanks to our friend Sjimon over at Week in Pop, we have another new tune from the group to enjoy…plus the announcement of a new LP. There’s something about this tune that crafts this brooding sensation; it seems to almost have an air of traditional goth flare…though with Lauren Eddy’s voice there’s always going to be this sort of angelic dreaminess working its way into the tune. They seem to play with that balance between dark and light here, especially around the 1:45 mark where the song turns into this pounding sonic exploration before settling back into Eddy’s vocal performance to wrap the tune in a perfect bow for you. Their new LP, Pyramid, will be out on Wallflower Records on October 25th.

Admittedly, I was all in with the reemergence of psych rock that came with things like Levitation and the like. But, after a few years, it got kind of boring; it felt like everyone was recycling the same bits and pieces, and I just grew weary of listening to the same song over and over. Fast forward to now, and there’s this new LP from the Flower Graves. It was presented to me as two halves of an LP; sure, there are song breaks, but the presentation really let me immerse myself within the album’s confines…which is how I fell in love with it. You can find the stereotypical psych tropes, like fuzzed out riffs and smokey guitar noodling, but peak beneath the songs and you’ll find this striking pop sensibility. “Living in Disguise,” for instance, definitely employs a stronger sense of melody than one typically finds, leaning almost towards dreamy pop realms. I’m partial to Side B’s “Plastic Orange;” it feels like a pop hot air balloon just slowly descends atop the whole LP, which, in turn, sets you up for the heavy riffs of “Night Byrd.” The whole Living in Disguise LP is a journey, but one easily worth your time today; the album drops Friday via Wallflower Records.

Young Mammals Share Lost in Lima

As a Texas based blog, we’ve got to rep the state whenever possible, especially when its an act we’re already committed to: Young Mammals. They’ve recently announced Lost in Lima, their new LP…and below it the album’s title track; they had me hooked before hearing the song when they name dropped Wire and Neruda in the recording process. For my two cents, this song is bordering on jangle; it’s got its own bit of fog that sort of hangs over the group, which actually makes the pop sensibility billow through your speakers as things progress. I love the softness of the vocals, like a nice bit of frosting on an already delicious cake. The new record will be out on Wallflower Records on June 22nd.

Premiere Summer Twins Ready New 7″

January brought us new music for Summer Twins; it was the first new music we’ve heard from the sisters since 2015’s Limbo. But, today we’re really excited to share this glittering ballad off their brand new 7″ for Wallflower Records. Opening with a lonely guitar tone, as if it were out there rambling all alone, sets the tones for the soulful entry of the vocals. It’s striking in its immediate presentation, but as the song unfurls added layers build a powerful structure…percussion and strings aid in this swelling pop. It wraps up in the end with that same solemn guitar and vocal, a beautiful close to a beautiful tune. Their new 7″ will be available digitally on Wednesday, with Wallflower putting out the physical copy midsummer!
