Darren Hayman Readies New LP

All apologies for starting off your Friday with such a sobering tune, but new music from Darren Hayman (and his Electric Guitars) is always a pleasure, thus I wanted to begin our day with this sad tune. “Somebody just died” is about as heartbreaking of an opening as you’re going to find, and the song dwells in this solemnity, waiting for the careful craft to unfold along with Darren’s storytelling. He’s pulling these powerful emotions out of his guitar this go round, and in doing so, he’s celebrating the friend he’s lost. The instrumental breakdown, in this setting, feels like a musical salute to the deceased, shooting notes off into the ether. You’ll get to hear this track on Amazing Things, the new LP from WIAIWYA, out later this year!

The Martial Arts Drop Friends for Fools

Glaswegian pop rock act The Martial Arts are going to be dropping a new record for you next week, so why not take the chance to indulge your pop roots a bit here by listening to their latest single. It opens with this sort of pub rock chug to it, with a nice little bit of cowbell thrown in for fun, but the big hooks don’t swing into the song until you hit the 35 second mark. This is where they turn you into a pop fanatic, dropping sharp percussive beats and angular strums that open up into power pop goodness. Paul Kelly’s voice just rips in this performance, punctuating his delivery in the right spots, then pulling back the sheets to reveal the melodic underbelly that runs throughout. In There Like Swimwear will be out on August 9th via WIAIWYA.

The Martial Arts Share Not Coming Down

There’s a new album coming soon from The Martial Arts, and if we’re going in on this new single, it sounds like we’re going to be spinning around to some magnificent pop sweetness. The band claim this is “the indie pop/power pop answer song to Irene Cara’s ‘Flashdance (What a Feeling)’, and that makes sense as there’s a certain pop stomp that cruises through the song’s front half; it’s as upbeat and fist-pumping as you’re going to get form a pop rock act. They double down after the 2 minute mark, driving the riffs and infectious nature right through the speakers with such volume that your body is naturally inclined to sing-along, even if you haven’t memorized the lyrics just yet. You’re allowed to have fun and still be cool, I promise. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about the new record, slated for an August release from WIAIWYA.

Silver Biplanes Announce New LP + Share Radiogram Video

A little over a year ago, Silver Biplanes dropped their debut, A Moment in the Sun; the album was filled with a sort of pastoral indiepop vibe, as Vanessa’s voice encompassed a nostalgic brand of pop we don’t hear often enough. Fast forward to today, and they’ve got a new single and a new record; they’ve described the new single as somewhere along the lines of “The Cardigans, Hawkwind, the Who and the Buggles.” Honestly, I don’t know what to make of that either, but it shows some of the exploration they take on with their new album, Traveling by Candlelight. You’ll get these little psychedelic nods in here, rolling around through washes of synths and guitar washes that coat the track in this dense pop haven. Sounds like they’re going to take the crisp joy of pop and see how far they can stretch it! You can get the new LP on April 2nd via WIAIWYA and Old Bad Habits.

Spearmint Announce This Candle Is For You

As I look through the overwhelming amount of great tunes coming out this Friday, I’m really excited that there’s a fresh Spearmint album coming to us soon! Soft brushes across the snare set a jolly beat, something that’ll make you lightly tap your toes as the chilled melody blows through your bedroom. But, as someone who relishes beautiful musical moments, in whatever fashion, tie into the 1:48 mark; there’s the slightest tonal change, creating this striking yearning moment that completely floored me as the song strode into its back half. You ever have one of those days where you wish you could just take a song and put it in your pocket and carry it around with you all day long? No? Just me? Well, today, I want this Silver Biplanes track with me wherever I go. It’s got this beautiful innocence to it, something that just seems both timeless and nostalgic all at once, matched by the video footage that accompanies the track. The melodiousness of the vocals is so sublime that it’s almost too sweet for your listening pleasure; you’ll be coming back in no time to listen to this tune again and again. New Music from Silver Biplanes

When listening to Silver Biplanes latest single, you’re certainly going to here that nostalgic pop feel; the vocals are certainly reminiscent of the doo-wop pop era. But, the packaging of the sugary center is a little different here. The band build a heavy wall of fuzz, bathing the sweetness in this distorted world of atmospherics. It’s like the band have constructed this cocoon of darkness, but on the inside is this brilliant butterfly ready to break free and present itself unto the world. If you’re interested in what the band are doing, as you should be, keep an ear out, as the group are set to release A Moment in the Sun just after the new year kicks off, via WIAIWYA.

Ever stumble into something and totally get dumbstruck? Well, when I turned on this track from the Martial Arts, I’ll admit, I was a bit gobsmacked (not Godsmacked like RayRay’s favorite band). At times, it channels the sort of high school pop of the 50s; it’s playful and filled with these charms that seem to come from the jukebox era. That said, the sound has this natural earnestness, almost like it’s a DIY doing their best to craft stadium-ready rockers. It sounds like everything I’ve ever heard, and yet nothing sounds at all like what the band is doing. The band will be re-releasing the Getting Stranger by the Month EP on August 12th via WIAIWYA.

Frontperson Announce New LP, Parade

When you are involved in various other acts, like the New Pornographers (Kathryn Calder) or Woodpigeon (Mark Andrew Hamilton), its got to be difficult to lay down the pieces to a new Frontperson LP. There were, of course, other barriers like a pandemic and pregnancy, but now all the pieces have come together and the duo have announced Parade. This track is like a tricked out pop gem, something that doesn’t seem too far away from Kathryn’s other gig. There’s this synthetic key work that plays the role of the background, then it seems like everything else, including the vocals gets layered down bit by bit, building the texture into something full and enlightening. Personally, I dig the restraint, as it would have been easy to sell a hook in this, but they hold it back, letting the layers and the overlapping melodies build that joyous sensation for listeners. Parade is out April 29th via Oscar St Records/WIAIWYA.

WIAIWYA Releases Holiday Compilation

Our friends over in the UK will likely already be all over this one, but just wanted to make sure everyone was in the know on our end, as WIAIWYA just dropped an incredible holiday compilation titled 24. It’s 24 songs from some of the finest purveyors of pop music around; Pete Astor, Love Burns, the Orchids, the BVs, and a bunch bunch more of artists we’ve been covering on this site for some time. I have a feeling there’s a little something for everyone in this mix, so feel free to sample a tune or two below, then if you feel so inclined spread the holiday cheer by telling a friend!
