New Winged Wheel Single Drops

It amazes me how indifferent the indie scene seems to be to Winged Wheel. The band features indie rock stalwart Fred Thomas, rock legend Steve Shelley…not to mention folks like Cory from Spray Paint, Whitney Johnson and Matthew J. Rolin; this is a fucking indie rock supergroup if there ever was one! So yeah…they’ve got anew single from their forthcoming Desert So Green LP, and it operates in the fashion of a discordant Stereolab; the progression of the song definitely pulls from a psychedelia meets kraut-rock fusion, losing all pigeon-holing as it spins you around and around. I loved the cavernous effects that rocked through the vocals, seemingly distant yet locked into the front of the mix so it draws you further into the tune. The latter half of the song has this great little breakdown that twinkles and sparkles into this harrowing bit of psychedelia that should have your ears pinned back so you can grab a copy of the new LP; it hits on January 9th via 12XU.

More New Music from Winged Wheel

Not too long ago we were discussing the meditative nature of the first single on the new Winged Wheel LP, but as one would expect from a group of well-seasoned songwriters, their latest track ventures off on a different path. This single almost feels like a lost transmission, with the vocals distant in their presentation; they carefully tip-toe around each little bent guitar line. Careful ears will find a bobbing little bass line maneuvering beneath, holding the tune together as the transmission reverberates in your listening space, all before crashing into each other and fading out in proper fashion. Their new LP, Desert So Green, will be out on January 9th via 12XU Records.

Last Week’s Jams (10.13 – 10.17)

There was a lot of really great music, and in all likelihood, we’re nearing the end of the yearly cycle, where I expect to kind of see a flutter of singles then the lists will pop up! On our end, we covered a lot of the ATX this week, with new stuff from Jet Cemetery, Don’t Get Lemon, Gus Baldwin and Living Set. There were some new tunes that really rocked me, like Deathcat‘s pop punk masterpiece, not to mention the new Winged Wheel noise pop piece. Even managed to find some room for old favorites like Living Hour, Pia Fraus and Bubblegum Lemonade among the masses! Crank this playlist up, as it starts with a banger from Possible Humans.

Winged Wheel Announce Desert So Green

There’s been an absence of artful noise in the indie scene, replaced by neo-grunge and nu-gaze. All of this allows for a band like Winged Wheel to fly under the radar, despite the incredible resume of its band members. Today, they’ve announced their third LP, Desert So Green, which feels like a scientific exploration of where noise can go. On the first single, it opens with this jagged ringing guitar, operating in isolation for the first 30 seconds or so, waiting for a separate guitar and drums to enter; their entry, however, feels distant, allowing for the constant ring of that opening riff. Layers continue to build, adding in vocals and anxiety, waiting for the song to momentarily rupture as the discord just takes on too much. Despite those forays left and right, the song has this constant gravitational pull that will lock you into its meditative noise control. Look for Desert So Green via 12XU in January of next year.

Top Albums of 2024…According to Nathan

I love to wrap up the year later than most, mostly because my real job always has me swimming against the current. But, nonetheless, I’ve got a solid list of the records I loved this year…and you’ll notice a lot of the same stuff as my peers, with maybe a few tweaks here and there to throw my own flare into it. Not really sure how to write an intro into something that seems so opinion-based, so here’s the list of records you should already have purchased if you come to this site frequently!

Last Week’s Jams (3.18 – 3.22)

After a week where I felt we left our visitors down, due to some musical gather in Austin, we came back with a vengeance this week. We repped some hometown heroes, announcing that Eastside Suicides would be reissuing their debut, along with a new tune from our friends in Blushing. Perennial site favorites Rural France and Red, Pinks and Purples made their usual appearance with fresh tunes for you. I loved new stuff from Winged Wheel and Yea-Ming and the Rumours. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a bad song in this playlist, which duh, we get to hand-pick what we cover. Press play and enjoy.

Winged Wheel Announce Big Hotel

After Shellac came out of nowhere with an announcement this week, it only seems fitting that there’s more surprises in the 2024 release schedule, like a brand new LP from Detroit’s Winged Wheel. We’re just about two years removed from No Island, and it looks like they’ve added Steve Shelley to the mix too for a new album. There’s this swirling ominousness that opens the track, building this almost sterile world of darkness; it feels like the precursor to a murder in a parking garage (if it had a cooler soundtrack). Whitney’s voice comes in like an echo, hauntingly bouncing between the lines of the band’s craft. There are certainly moments where one could go explosive and just phone it in, but I appreciate how they’ve just locked into the groove here. Big Hotel is out May 3rd via 12XU.
