New Tunes from Dominant Legs

dominantlegsWe first caught wind of Dominant Legs by way of Stereogum a few weeks back.  Any allusion to Belle and Sebastian will catch my eye! Still, this new tune isn’t quite the twee pop one expected, but it’s more summery, as if there is a lighter air to the crafty writing here. You decide.

FFFFest Spotlight: Coalesce

coalesceAll right people, with only two weeks left until Fun Fun Fun Fest, we here at Austin Town Hall are feverishly finalizing our concert schedules.  Running down the line up of the four stages I see many bands that get me truly excited. Gorilla Biscuits! The Jesus Lizard! Danzig!(?) But if I had to choose one band that gives me reason to subject myself to two days of loud music and sleepless nights I would have to choose Kansas City’s own Coalesce.

Coalesce has released some of the most innovative records that hardcore has seen. From the blistering speed and ferocity of their debut, Give Them Rope (1997) to the groove-laden, but no less heavy, Functioning on Impatience (1998) and 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening (1999), Coalesce have firmly planted themselves as stalwarts of the hardcore scene.  After a lengthy hiatus, Coalesce has returned this year with OX, their first full length in ten years, as well as their most accomplished records to date. OX mixes the band’s intensity with their new found appreciation of the music of America.

I haven’t even touched on the band’s intense stage presence.  I have driven thirteen hours on two separate occasions to witness the spectacle that is Coalesce live.  You would be hard-pressed to witness a more energetic live band than Coalesce, so do yourself a favor and head over to the Black Stage on Sunday, November 8th at 4:50 p.m. and prepare yourself to see four guys giving their all for something that they love.

First Track From Them Crooked Vultures

tcv1At this point you may have seen/listened to the youtube video with the first single from supergroup Them Crooked Vultures that hit the net yesterday.  You people know ATH is digging it so here’s an MP3 of that track for your downloading pleasure.  It’s pretty loud and straight up rock n roll.  The self-titled debut album from the band will be available Nov 17th.

New Tunes from The Bats

batsJudging by the look of this picture, you would think that New Zealand band The Bats might be just a touch to old to bring sweet tunes to your ears, but rest assured, they don’t have a 25 year old history for nothing.  Just like The Clean, they still have what it takes to spin phenomenal gems out of thin air, ones that inevitably get stuck in your head. Try this one on for size. If you dig it, you can find it on the 7″ over at Slumberland Records.

New Tunes from Surf City

Surf+City+surfcity140A while back we brought you the sweet tunes of Surf City fresh off releasing their first EP, but now the group has more new tunes in the works, and we’re glad to bring you the new tune.  While it takes “Autumn” a few second to wind up, the band let loose once the song gets going, bringing us more than we expected.  Guess we’ll have to wait until 2010 to get more great tunes such as this.

While the jury is still out on just how good Vapours is, we still look forward to an always energetic show from Islands. Touring behind their new album, they will also be bringing along Jemina Pearl to back the group up.  Tickets are fairly cheap, so you can’t really not attend this show can you?  Sure, there are loads of good ones this week, but the way Nic plays onstage is enough to get us out there. And who knows, maybe he’ll throw us a bone and give us “The Sound.”
