New Tunes from Jonsi

jonsiAs there seems to be a temporary lull in the career of Sigur Ros, their members seem to be making the push forward with music of their own. Jonsi has  a new album coming out in March on XL Recordings, and oddly, this opening track seems similar to a more symphonic Mew piece, which also features lyrics in English!  It’s really like the soundtrack to Peter and the Wolf meets Mew. Try it.  And find Go, the album, out March 22.

FT50: Songs of 2009

bestof2009cover_songsWe have to start this list off with a disclaimer.  We have three writers, all with different tastes, so the list should reflect that a little bit.  Also, these are our opinions, and by no means, are they meant to be seen as an “end all be all” to the question of what were the best songs of 2009.  That being said, we like our list quite a bit.  Sure, it’s got some expected numbers at the top, but the rest of the list is genius.  We’ve got some of the songs streaming for you, and the rest take you straight to youtube.  Follow the jump for full list.

New Tunes from The Art Museums

artIt’s that time of year when bands clamor to build a name for themselves in hopes of being your favorite band in 2010.  Recent Woodsist signees, The Art Museums,  are on that list, hoping to win you over when they release their album Rough Frame in early 2010.  For now though, they’ve got a neat little number to pique your interest, so take a listen and get excited.

FTC: The Impossibles

impossiblesAs I thought about this year’s best Austin albums (which comes out next week folks), I came across an ancient video of one of my favorite local bands, The Impossibles. Growing up in Austin, I had the pleasure of singing along with this band at least once a month.  Sure, I didn’t know everyone there, but I felt as if they were all my friends.  We screamed, we threw up our hands in unison, and yes, we skanked a little bit, or a whole lot, depending upon your dedication and conditioning.  The guys in this band went on to play parts in Mineral and LAX (lets not forget Slowreader).   It was a time of youth and innocence, and The Impossibles were the perfect blend of both.  Let’s travel down memory lane together.

New Music From The Whigs

thewhigsRight after stopping in Austin on Tuesday, The Whigs have just anounced a new album for release in 2010.  The album, In The Dark, will be released on March 2nd of next year via ATO Records.  You can get your hands on two songs from the new record on the band’s website for free.  One of these new tracks  called “Hundred/Million” is below and another by the name of “In the Dark” is free on The Whig’s site.  Both are pretty rockin’ little numbers.

New Music From Fang Island

FangIslandFang Island is another one of those Brooklyn bands that can sometimes fall behind the shadow of their local brothers like MGMT or Yeasayer.  The sounds of Fang Island can sometimes resemble those bands, but we think they have a more hard rocking edge to their sound.  The band is about to release their debut self-titled LP due out Feb. 23rd on Sargent House.  Here’s the first single from that album called “Daisy”.

New Tunes from Shearwater

20061222shearwaterAustin’s Shearwater are preparing for the release of their third album, The Golden Archipelago, in 2010 on Matador Records.  We’re sure that it will be something you will all swoon over, at least we know that we will be doing so, as we are avid fans of the group.  Maybe this will be the album that makes them a name everyone is talking about…they should be bigger than Grizzly Bear. And check out Matador’s site for some cool pre-order deals!
