Islands @ The Parish (7/6)

Date Tuesday, July 6th
Location Parish
Doors 800p
Tickets $10 HERE

When haven’t we been fans of Islands?  Since the split of his old band, we’ve loved everything Nic Diamonds has done, and Islands is no exception.  They’ll be making their way through town, and as things have been slow as of late, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to catch a great band in our fair city.  You’ll also get a chance to watch Steel Phantoms and Active Child, the opening bands, who have also been building a name for themselves.  So why not go check out this great show? Excatly, you have no reason, so we’ll see you there.

Free Album from Spirit Night

You cannot argue with getting free music in the morning can you?  Well, lucky for you I’ve discovered this killer band from West Virginia named Spirit Night.  They sort of remind me of a lot of the lo-fi efforts going around, but they have a lot of strong melodies that really bring the songs to fruition for the listeners.  Their album is titled What We Will Be, and its chock full of really solid tracks, all worthy of a good listen this Monday morning.  You can get it free HERE, or listen to the following track for a sneak preview of the goods.

FT5: One Hit Wonder Albums of the 90s

Ah the nineties! The smell of grungy teen spirit and catchy pop songs…does this sound like the intro of a late night infomercial yet? Good.

There is plenty of debate regarding epic rock bands and influential artists that derived during the 90s. There are also those bands that developed during this decade, became ridiculously popular, and either faded away or became larger-than-life.

I’m sure each and every one of you reading this is guilty of immediately purchasing an entire album based on one chart-topping track during this time period. The hits that came out of the 90s take you back to where you were when you first heard it, affected your life in some way and ultimately became a part of pop culture iconography.

There is an abundance of one hit wonder singles. However, this is a list of albums that gained bands immediate attention based on those hits, and never really produced another decent album. As you slammed your Pogs, took a break from Nintendo and recorded Fresh Prince on your VHS, you might have been listening to one of these.

We’ve been hyping up Austin band FreshMillions a lot lately, and deservedly so.  You’ll get a chance to catch the talented act this Saturday night, a night dedicated to glorious dance music.  Legendary DJ Tommie Sunshine will be spinning the headlining spot, and All My Friends are opening up the evening.  You’ll love the local Austin act, and I can admit, though I’m not dancing inclined as of late, Tommie knows how to kick a killer beat on the dance floor.  So why not celebrate your July 4th Eve with one of Austin’s hottest bands, and one the US’ hottest DJs. Do it!

New Tunes from Kathryn Calder

The ridiculously beautiful Kathryn Calder of New Pornographers is at it again.  She’s just released her second single from her debut album, Are You My Mother, which comes out on August 10th.  It’s a gentle ballad with the focus on piano playing.  Something in her vocal delivery reminds me of a young Jenny Lewis, and you know that can’t be a bad thing by any means.  Make sure to give this plenty of spins today, as its well worth your time.

FTC: Sound Team

I will begin my From the Closet today by saying that you should check out the wikipedia page about Austin band Sound Team if you don’t know their history.  It’s a long story about a band that showed heaps of promise before breaking up amongst turmoil in the band and dissatisfaction with their label.  Like I said, check our their wikipedia page and read up.  Today I am bringing you a song from Sound Team’s one and only major label LP Movie Monster.  Despite what some people may say, I actually enjoyed that record when it came out and still spin it every once and awhile.  This jam “Born to Please” serves as an introduction to that LP right after a short “intro” type track.  I highly recommend picking that one up at your local record store.  Of course the former members of Sound Team are still making waves in the local scene so it’s not like all is lost for you fans of the sound.  Bill Baird and Sam Sanford currently jams in Sunset, Matt Oliver and Jordan Johns currently run TV Torso, and Will Patterson has struck out on his own as Sleep Good.  Maybe one day we can get them all back together again for a lil reunion?

Stream Wavves New Album: King of the Beach

This is a just a short note, as people everywhere should be on this already, but if you dig Wavves, you can stream the new album right HERE. Personally, I’m really excited for this record, as he enlisted the old back-up band for Jay Reatard, and since I can’t have Jay anymore (RIP), then perhaps Wavves will be the next big thing. Go stream it. Tell me if you like it.
