Show Preview: The Strokes @ Stubbs (10/6)

Date 10/6/10
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets Sold Out Duh.

So the night has finally come and I’m sure a lot of you have already pissed your pants in anticipation for The Strokes show at Stubbs tonight.  From what I’m hearing, the rock veterans don’t even have an opener so make sure you get there early.  I personally didn’t feel like $60 was worth it on this one since I can see the band at ACL.  Honestly, does anyone ever remember a show at Stubbs that cost this much?  I know I know, C3 had to pay what I’m sure is the ridiculous fee to get the band… but come on!

  • $1.30 per min. Now that’s value.

  • $1.30?!?! I think that is giving them too much credit. They did take an almost 10 minute break between their two 25 minute sets. What a let down. We waited for hours to see less than an hour of music? WTF?!?!? I loved the music, WHEN THEY WERE ACTUALLY PLAYING!!!! But come on guys. What they hell are they gonna do at ACL. There is an hour and a half to fill. I guess they’ll just walk off twice and play an extra song or two.

  • hahaha.

@Sam – Kyle is referring to a post I made on Facebook. Our figure came from $65 a ticket/50 minute show = $1.30. I’m really glad I didn’t pay for this shit.

  • just sent this email to Stubbs management…

    To whom it may concern,

I am writing this message to convey my extreme disappointment in The Strokes concert last night. I have been a fan of the band, and a fan of Stubbs for many years now, but never before have I experienced such lack of respect for the audience. The ticket price of around $65 was outrageous to begin with, especially when you consider that Bob Dylan’s ACL show at Stubbs was $55 a couple years back. Bob fucking Dylan. Cheaper than the Strokes.

So many things were wrong about that show, and I can’t help but feel exploited by the band and the management. Not having an opener but making everyone wait 2 hours for the show to start was extremely frustrating. The to get off the stage after playing for 30 minutes, and demand an encore? This isn’t a punk show at Beerland. We paid to see a show. We got a brief encore that left us without what I calculate out to be a little over 40 minutes of a set, when you take out all the dicking around they did on stage. I have never seen people boo a band after they got off stage at Stubbs. In bathroom lines, on our way out, and several blocks away, all you could hear about was how upset everyone was with the show. There pre-show was shorter than their planned ACL set. That is absurd.

Most performance contracts have an agreed amount of time the band is expected to play in order to get paid. Did the Strokes fulfill this? And if so, why did C3 agree to such a short set? If they broke this part of the contract, then C3 should collect money and distribute a partial refund to the ticket buyers.

Most likely, this is all through no fault of C3 and Stubbs management. Naturally, artists are unpredictable and ultimately responsible for the quality of a show, and bad shows do happen from time to time. We purchased tickets for a Strokes concert and we saw a Strokes concert. I don’t expect a refund, though I feel like I deserve one, but I also understand business and how things work. I don’t expect anything to come of this message, but you needed to know the sentiment. As a premier venue in Austin, I know your goal is to make a business of providing the greatest live music productions for the live music capital of the world. A big part of that is bring quality shows and respecting your customers, and while I can’t be sure who’s fault last night really was, I can be sure that you value my opinions and the enjoyment of my experience at your business. I hope I never have another experience like I did last night at Stubbs.

  • Thanks for the email hman. Maybe someone will see this and take note that people are pretty pissed off.

I really like the point you make about Bob fucking Dylan costing less money than the Strokes show.

  • i got everything that i expected. If you see their Lolla setlist you wouldve known how long they were playing. Its whatever.

  • No Lollapalooza is totally different. There is more than ONE band and there is limited time. They all freaking night to play. I might not have felt so ripped off if there had been an opener, more than a 30min set, or if the guy at the gate had given me some lube before I walked through the door. At least then I might have known what to expect. I’ve been to hundreds of concerts and never felt so taken advantage of. There is no excuse for it other than some snotty silver spoon fed young hipsters giving a half-ass preformance for an over priced concert. I think I deserve my money back. Or at lease half of it untill they come back on and play another half a concert. I love Stubbs and Austin, and I did love the
Strokes untill last night. It sucks this is the first time I’ve ever ggot to see them and it was such a disapointing show.

  • Before I got to the show I knew The Strokes were playing 17 songs and no opening band. I also knew how much I paid. Stop whining.

  • You know what you all should do? Go see Ted Leo play. It’s ten bucks, and its the best time of your life. Or, if you’re already at ACl, go see him Sunday. If he had a light show, he’d be the best performer there, guarantee.

  • Oh, I’m sorry jnip. I guess I didn’t get that memo. And I did know how much I paid, I just had higher expectations. And last I checked this is a free forum and I can whine if I want to.

  • Are you serious? You crybabies are f#cking complaining! I would’ve paid so much more than that to attend this show! I swear, if you people don’t know how lucky you are, you’re crazy! First of all; have you ever seen a strokes show? They’re usually around an hour. Why, because *most* of their songs are like 3-4 minutes. So average of 3.5 minutes at an hour yeah, that’s like 17 songs or so. Okay, you said they were messing around between songs, first off, awesome…they don’t do that alot, at least in the past, it’s more common now. you should of enjoyed it. So you said maybe they played 40 minutes. okay 3.5 into 40 a little over 11 songs. Most concerts are around that. Ugh! Take back that hour of your life and give it to someone who wants it! Like me or another fan!
