Friday Top 5: Small Indie Labels

It’s been a good couple of years for the majority of indie labels, with vinyl making a comeback and people appreciating good music.  And while there are some great stalwart indie labels such as Merge, Matador, Slumberland or Secretly Canadian, there’s a whole other tier of labels that have begun to blossom beneath the radar.  I wanted to take the time to shine a spotlight on these smaller labels, knowing myself that brand loyalty to record labels is huge in the music industry.

As a young kid, my love for Green Day (the early years) made me a devout fan of Lookout!, which later led to my man crush with Ted Leo.  Or, we can talk about how my awkward emo  years gave way to undying devotion for anything being put out by Vagrant.  Yeah, I even bought that shitty Reggie and the Full Effect record. You see, some people will follow you as long as you’ve got their trust in what you’re putting out, so I wanted to highlight some of my favorite labels in the world.  As we start our own label here at ATH, it’s important to look around and see what makes a great label great.  So here it is, my top five heavy-hitters in the smaller indie record label arena.

Danceable Bedroom Pop from Onuinu

You don’t typically think of dance music or bedroom pop when you think of Portland do you?  I agree, but it looks like the one-man project Onuinu aims to change our minds this year.  Dorian Duvall is the man behind the project, and he’s finally going to see a full-length come to fruition when he releases Mirror Gazer on August 21st of this year via Bladen County Records.  If you listen to jam below, you’ll find yourself in that escape mentality, arms in the air as you swing your body around your bedroom.  Those are the best kind of days, are they not?

Show Preview: Black Bananas @ Red 7 (5/12)

Date Saturday, May 12th
Location Red 7
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $8 from Transmission

So Friday is for dancing, and Saturday you gotta rock.  What better show is going on in town for those needs than the Black Bananas show over at Red 7.  Black Bananas is Jen Herrema, and basically it’s RTX (her former band from her former band Royal Trux) under a different moniker; they’ll be promoting their recent album Rad Times Xpress IV, which got a lot of love from P4K.  Also, Dwarr, the bluesy metal fanatics on Drag City are also co-headlining the evening, so you’re main acts are definitely tasty, but you’ll also have the always excellent Magik Markers opening the evening.  You’ll want to get there early to witness their greatness. Have fun kids; should be a blast!

New Tunes from Guided By Voices

Guided By Voices is certainly an acquired taste for many, but if you listen to this track, you’re going to have to recognize the songwriting gifts of Robert Pollard and Co. You can find the song on a 7″, as well as the new LP Class Clown Spots a UFO, which hits stores on June 12th.  In my mind, this is perhaps one of the best songs the group’s written.  For one, there’s a good solid length (something often lacking from the group) and Bob’s voice sounds remarkable here.  It’s about as simple as a pop ballad as you can get, and I’m loving it!

Show Preview: Fresh Millions @ the ND (4/11)

Date Friday, May 11th
Location The ND
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $5

Friday night is always perfect for a solid dance party, so your place to be on this rainy week definitely has to be the ND.  You’ll find a new line-up for Fresh Millions, as the group now is just the project of Geoff, working with loops and samples, rocking it out on his own.  But, while we love Geoff, there’s a couple of other names on the bill, and my personal favorite is Orthy.  I picked the group to have a huge year in Austin this year, and I want you to be a part of it.  Also, Ricky Jean Francois is filling the middle spot, and I’ve heard nothing but good things.  Dance party central? Let’s all show up and support the local gig.

Scuzzy Beach Rock from Guantanamo Baywatch

Dirtnap Records has done a pretty solid job with releases this year, and they might just have another one on their hands with the new record from Guantanamo Baywatch.  The album is called Chest Crawl, and this track is pretty much a solid snippet of what the whole thing will sound like to your ears.  It reminds me of a weird surf rock jam that lives somewhere between Thee Oh Sees and the Cramps.  It might not be for everyone, but it’s the kind of stuff I’ve been into lately. Give it a little taste.

Dark Jam from Rayon Beach

Just a bit ago we were watching a passionate set from Austin’s Rayon Beach, with the three piece punk-of-sorts band opening for Terry Malts.  Their songs were catchy and powerful, even without the presence of a bass guitar.  Luckily for fans of the band it’s time for you all to open up your ears and check out the group’s new LP, This Looks Serious, which you can purchase from Hozac Records (gold colored vinyl if you’re a nerd like that). I dig the shady darkness that kind of has the band brooding here, giving them this weird sensation of facing peril head-on.  It’s only a matter of time before Austin’s darlings make bigger waves–this LP seems to be that step out the door.  AND…if you’re in Austin, the band has their LP release tonight at 29th Street Ballroom.

Show Pics: Tennis @ The Parish (5/8)

Spaulding, get dressed you’re playing golf. – No I’m not grandpa, I’m playing tennis.

Tennis played The Parish on a Tuesday, a rainy Tuesday. The show was sold out, very sold out. There a few shows a year that bring out the part time show-goers, this was definitely one of them. It’s not a bad thing, by any means. We need them to come out so that they get hooked again and we can get better booking and venue additions/remodels. In fact, this is precisely why The Parish was reborn with its great lights and fantastic sound.

Vacationer came along and we all had a good time, well most of us. Read for notes and pics.

New Music From Eternal Summers

I’ve heard little to nothing from fuzz-pop group Eternal Summers since posting their sweet jam of summer cerca 2010 “Pogo”.  Well now the group just sent out word a few days ago that they have a new LP entitled Correct Behavior due out July 24th via Kanine Records.  We’re obviously pretty excited about the news and are even more excited to share this new song with you “Millions”.  Maybe this can be a summer jam 2012?  Damn it’s hot.

Great Old Song from Montero

It’s been pouring in Austin since yesterday, so I’m really happy that this song fits in perfectly with the weather.  To continue with my adoration of all things Oceanic, I’d like to reintroduce you to Montero…the project of Ben Montero (also featuring Guy of Chapter Music and Geoff of Crayon Fields).  At first, you’d think I’m just plugging my friends, and yea, I am, but this songs too great not to put it back on people’s radars.  This song comes from a 7″ they put out last year on Mistletone, and VICE caught wind of the band and made up THIS little mini-documentary.  I guess there’s never a bad time to listen to a good song, so enjoy this one friends; I do this for you all.
