Show Preview: She Sir @ the Mohawk (7/17)

Date Tuesday, July 17th
Location The Mohawk
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $5 at the Door

In need of an early week rock show? Well, you better end up at Mohawk on Tuesday night as our friend Adi presents some of his favorite local acts, and ours as well.  She Sir has been rather quiet lately, but we hear they’ve got a brand new single on its way–not to mention they always put a solid show together.  Then you have one of the best acts in town with Shivery Shakes filling the middle slot; this is surely worth your $5 on a Tuesday night.  And finally, Dagars (Dallas) will kick start the evening, so get there early to show your support.  It’s cheap, and there’s great bands, so you’ve got no excuse not to be there.

Show Pics: Blind Pilot @ La Zona Rosa (7/13)

Blind Pilot has a habit of bring along outstanding openers. Last time it was Dan Mangan. This time, we had Lost Lander.

Despite it being a Friday the 13th, +1 and I headed to La Zona Rosa after a nice dinner, joining what seemed to be many other couples on a date night. And why not? Both bands ooze with sensible songwriting conducive to holding hands and swaying a little while singing along.

Pics and more notes after the break…

New Tunes from Deep Sea Arcade

You know we love the Aussie’s over here at ATH, so it figures that I’d stumble upon another act from Sydney that I’d dig.  Deep Sea Arcade has a different sound than the majority of the acts I fawn over from Oceania, featuring a cleaner guitar sound and hints at nostalgic Britpop…in my ears.  I love the wash of the vocals on this track, which comes from their album, Outlands; it’s just been released in the States by Microfiche Records. If you’re looking for some sprightly tunes in the way of classic guitar rock then enjoy this track!

We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves – Make A Mess of Sacred Ground

Rating: ★★★★☆

I’ve been pleasantly following the career of We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves for well over a year, and it seems to have all come to a head with their excellent new LP, Make a Mess of Sacred Ground.  Sure, you’re going to find hints of Smiths and Northern Soul all over the record, but this isn’t your typical re-hash; the group’s songwriters are too good to be run-of-the-will.

The first time I heard “Winsome William,” the opening track, I knew it was going to be a hit.  There’s that happening stomp and jangling guitars, then the vocals come in with this crooning swagger; it’s absolute bliss.  They’ve captured the best part of the Northern Soul movement, providing you with a song where you can swing your lover about, whilst still having lyrical content that begs attention.  While the sharpness of the guitars doesn’t necessarily continue in the same fashion on “Stop Moving,” the rolling drum beat that opens the track definitely makes way for some good listens. Personally, I love the urgency in the vocal delivery; you can hear the passion behind the voice–with lyrics that lean towards a sort of Dev Hynes construction.

Make A Mess of Sacred Ground isn’t just going to beat you over the head with jangle rock; the group loves the soul aspect to boot!  “Heart in a Sling” beings almost as if you’re chilling in a hip lounge somewhere, listening to a tight backing band support their favorite crooner.  Then the group joins in to take you on a twangy crash into the seas of pop precision.  Interestingly, they take a completely different approach altogether with the following track, “Eloise.”  It’s similar in structure to the album’s opener, yet here you’ll find a quieted acoustic guitar with vocals soaring at the front of the mix.  I was already in love with this song from the beginning, but then some string arrangements join in for accompaniment and I swooned; I can’t stop listening to this track.

If you haven’t heard of We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves, then you’re definitely in for a treat once you put this record on play.  From the spirited opener of “Winsome William” to the jangling bookend “Devil in the Old Folk’s Home,” you’ve got a diverse set of eight tracks that wrap themselves around your brain and heart.  Make a Mess of Sacred Ground is a quick listen, but it’s so infectious that you won’t be able to resist flipping it over and playing it again and again.  If you’re looking for a flawless record that you can show off to all your cool friends, then pick this one up and hopefully we can help spread the word about this great band.

Hooks Galore from Bravestation

It’s been pouring constantly for the better part of today, so I’ve been out and about doing some house work.  The soundtrack to my house painting and what not largely revolved around Toronto’s Bravestation.  Their sound is all over the place, but it’s like exploratory new wave, with tribal rhythms propelling the songs and bright swirling guitars present on every track.  The following track is featured on the group’s recent record, Giants & Dreamers, and the title really exemplifies the band’s sound throughout the effort.  I can see myself jamming for this for weeks to come, if only this rain would get out of my way!

Stripped Down Jam from Helvetia

I’m really digging the sound of this new track from Helvetia, who’ve just signed on with Joyful Noise Recordings.  It’s got a classic 90s indie rock sound, but that doesn’t mean that it’s outdated by any means.  There’s something about the vocal delivery; it’s almost as if there’s a bit of twang or drawl hanging on every note.  As the song changes direction in towards the end, you can see that the group’s not content to settle on any one sound in particular, pushing themselves to include some sonic extensions. You can grab this tune and others on September 11th when the group releases their new record, Nothing In Rambling.

New Killer Jam From Eternal Summers

We’ve already heard quite a bit of material from the new Eternal Summers LP Correct Behavior coming out on July 24th.  We posted on awesome tune “Millions” awhile back and we’ve seen several other songs posted around the interwebs on various sites.  As far as songs by this band go, I’m prepared to say that this one might just be my favorite yet.  It’s a driving rock number with an incredible pop sense about it.  Hope you enjoy it as much as me.

Brand New Beauty from The Helio Sequence

There are some bands who you wonder how they’ve remained in obscurity for so long.  I know it’s been four years since The Helio Sequence last released Keep Your Eyes Ahead, but even still, that record is super solid. And now, with the band set to release Negotiations on September 11th via Sub Pop Records, you expect big things, even if no one else does.  Listening to this track, it has the marks of the current indie climate, capturing both beauty and melody simultaneously, while still maintaining the intimacy I’ve always appreciated about the group.  If there was one band more people need to love, it’s this one.  Listen in to see if you don’t agree.

Show Review: Bass Drum of Death @ The Mohawk (7/10)

I like the new Red7. I really do. But there are only so many purple pics I can edit before going cross-eyed. For this show, I was back at the friendly confines of The Mohawk where all are welcome. Ahh, green, red, blue and plain ole off-white – The openers, La Migra, even decided to do an uplit by light bulb thing. I cranked up the ISO and had a whisky, pinky-raised.

Bass Drum of Death with DZ Deathrays in support, nary a bass guitar in sight for the latter two-thirds of the evening’s program. Plenty of familiar faces braved the crap weather and gave the Indoors arena a human temperature level.

More words and pics, of course, that way. ->

New Slow Country From Aaron Embry

As I sit and watch more and more rain fall on Austin, I keep churning out the slower tunes to fit my mood brought on by the weather.  This slow burner coming from singer/songwriter Aaron Embry is called “Moon of the Daylit Sky” and features a minimalistic take on song writing that’s sure to fit in with your somber rain soaked mood.  You can catch this track and nine more on the new LP from Aaron entitled Tiny Prayers out September 18th on Community Music.
