Fun Fest Interviews: Daughn Gibson
It’s Fun Fest time right about now if you weren’t aware, and ATH is kicking things into full force to get you pumped for the festival. As usual, part of our pre-coverage will be a few interviews of artists that we’re excited to see over the weekend. Today we’re bringing you our very first one with a feature on up and coming artist Daughn Gibson. He just put out his surprisingly awesome new album All Hell earlier this year, and we’re really looking forward to seeing him play again. Follow the jump for questions and answers from Daughn.
ATH: Earlier this year, you caught on with Sub Pop for the release of your new album. Do you think that’s been a jumping off point to your career? How is it different from being on a tiny “indie” label?
Daughn: Yeah time-wise Im definitely more freed up to do stuff I wanna do now, but it’s not like I’ve been chipping away at this as a “career” for years and years. I’d be making the same stuff regardless who, if anybody, ever put it out.
ATH: You also recently received raved review for the new album on many major sites. Do you think this praise helps get people to your shows? Are reviews important to you or do you just press on making music regardless of what critics say?
Daughn: I’m not convinced that reviews get people to shows. Either way, good reviews are definitely cool to read; bad ones obviously suck, but I try not to listen to my own stuff through somebody else’s ears. Opinions are like assholes and some folks got to shit like 8 times a day, so there’s no need to let all that stuff brown-up how I write.
ATH: You have a very unique set of vocal chops that have been compared to all kinds of vocal greats. Who do you think your style is most like? Or who has inspired your vocal delivery?
Daughn: Im pretty into country guys like Waylon Jennings, Toby Keith and Dwight Yoakam so I think just listening to all that got me singing the way I do. Glenn Danzig is also my kind of man singer.
ATH: Now with the release of All Hell under your belt, what’s next? Can we expect more new material?
Daughn: Yeah I’m working on a record now for Sub Pop due out next year.
ATH: Have you had time to check out the Fun Fest lineup? Anyone your particularly excited about seeing?
Daughn: Im excited to see Earth and Lagwagon.
ATH: Do you feel like you are more of a festival guy or venue lover?
Daughn: I never went to festivals before I started doing this so that whole world is new but I feel like I rarely get a full impact from a group watching them at a festival. There are obvious exceptions though. There’s something more way grandiose and kinda terrifying about watching 5000 people watch a band as crushing as Swans then maybe just seeing them in a venue, but I still prefer to be close up and going deaf at the venue.
ATH: If you had a slogan to go by as a band, what would it be?
Daughn: Don’t start no shit there won’t be none.
Many thanks again sir for making the time to speak with. We’ll see you at the festival! You can catch Daughn Gibson’s live set at Fun this weekend Saturday at 1:45pm over on the Blue Stage.
