Show Preview: Gold Panda @ Red7 (5/15)

Date 5/15
Location Red7
Doors 9:00pm
Tickets $12

Charli XCX ripped off Gold Panda. There, I said it. Her song in heavy rotation on SiriusXM is a straight replay with some meh lyrical overlay. But you aren’t like that, are you? Go get the real deal with Gold Panda putting down the hypnotic beats and layers at Red7 tomorrow night. Do it. Ghostly is on a roll right now, the latest out of Gold Panda is proof. Let’s ignore the over-exposed sampled track and go straight to the great new stuff from Half of Where You Live due June 10 to stream below.

Bonus, Corduroi and Roger Sellers join…

Nice Pop Music From Rathborne

brea_soudersLuke Rathborne is not a gentleman I know a whole lot about at this point, but I do know that I enjoy the sounds he’s currently creating.  His introduction to me, “Last Forgiven”, is streaming below and serves as a great pop hello to anyone unfamiliar with the artist.  He certainly has a knack for writing some interesting guitar driven pop tunes.

Rathborne has a new album called Soft due out July 2nd and is available for pre-order now.

New Danceable Jam from Minks

MINKS-Tides-End-COVER--720x719The growing catalog of Captured Tracks has several bands that wear the flag for everyone, but there are some forgotten gems that I don’t think people really give enough attention to, such as Minks.  The last effort from the project, By the Hedge, was a special listen, though I don’t recall too many people taking notice.  With the upcoming effort, Tides End, I’m hoping that things are about to change.  It’s the purest form of bedroom pop, with an underbelly of danceability that will surely attach itself to listeners.  Be prepared for another under-appreciated record on August 6th.

Sunny Pop Music From Jackson Scott

1950As I scour the internet for some new tunes to share, this new song “Sandy” by young upstart Jackson Scott has perked up my ears.  You’ll immediately notice a very sunny, airy, and bright feel to the song that could land it on a future summer playlist by yours truly.  If nothing else, it should be able to turn that frown upside down for a couple minutes.

New album Melbourne is due out July 23rd on Fat Possum Records.

Girl Pop from Big Wave

a1599649102_2In the wake up Rilo Kiley and Standard Fare passing into the abyss of great bands, I’ve been looking for something to perfectly fill my need for girl-fronted pop rock.  This latest single from Big Wave has me excited for what positive things are sure to come in the future from the group.  While there may be some dark subject matter, you wouldn’t be able to tell by the emotional pull of the music, giving off a powerful boost of energy.  This new single is, as usual, brought to you by the great folks over at Art is Hard Records.

Mozes and The Firstborn Have Skills

artworks-000046961608-2br5ga-t500x500Just this last week the folks over at Burger Records released a cassette from Dutch band Mozes and the Firstborn.  I like how the group opens up this lead single by jumping right into the chorus, than going backwards by offering up the verses.  The vocals remind me of Austin’s The Strange Boys, those there’s a different folk spin on the group’s approach.  A relaxed pace and a catchy chorus make this song worthy of repeat listens throughout your day, which will hold true for the band’s self-titled cassette.  It’s available now, so do what’s good for you and pick it up.

New Experimental Pop Music From Royal Forest

royalforest_press_2012_meWe’ve long been supporters of local boys Royal Forest and the interesting pop music they’ve been creating over the last several years both as Loxsly and under their current moniker.  Though the band have been upping their frequency of shows around town recently, we haven’t heard much new music since the October release of beautiful new track “Ambulance”.  Today welcome news has come our way that the band not only have a new tune to share with us, but also have recently completed a new album of material entitled Spillway.  Prior to that July 9th release date on King Electric Record Co, the band are offering up this new song “Everyone Who Knows You” as a sneak peak of what’s to come.  Similar to “Ambulance”, this new jam has a very Transference era Spoon vibe to it  with heavily effected vocals and guitars throughout.  If the entire new album can deliver with these types of pop influences and unique songwriting, we might be in for something special.

Show Preview: Natural Child @ Red 7 (5/14)

Natural Child

Date 5/14/13
Location Red 7
Doors 9PM
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

It seems like a bit of a slow week for live music in Austin until the weekend so bigger name indie groups like Natural Child should be a must for music lovers.  The show goes down on the inside stage of Red 7 and features a nice opener in the form of Birdcloud.  Coming in at only $10, this seems like a no-brainer if you’re looking for something to do on a Tuesday night.  Of course you know the rock will be brought and fun will be had by all.
