Happy Shivery Shakes Day

Shivery ShakesWell, our city had made us proud once this week, and it’s happening once again as Mayor Lee Leffingwell is naming today Shivery Shakes Day, in honor of our friend William and his band.  This is a great thing, as William has been working in the Austin scene for several years; first as The Bubbles and more recently with Shivery Shakes.  Plus, the band has just opened up a kickstarter to help fund the recording of their new album.  You can help the group out by donating a dollar or more right HERE.  Below you can jam to one of my favorite Shakes tunes.  Happy SS Day to you all.

After our recent calling out the local music scene, we’ve been receiving all kinds of information about local bands and we welcome every suggestion.  A band that has gone largely unnoticed on our part is local group Sleep ∞ Over who have been slowly making a name for themselves over the last several years opening for huge bands like Ariel Pink, Pure X, and Washed Out to name a few.  To assist the band in getting the word out on their music, we wanted to alert you to a show they’ll be headlining at the North Door on Saturday night.  Joining the group will be fellow locals Thousand Foot Whale Claw and DJ Miguel Sanchez.  Support locals!

Dark Pop From My Gold Mask

goldenmaskMy Gold Mask released their last album Leave Me Midnight just this past February but are already hard at on more new music for their fans.  A planned series of singles are in the works for the band currently and this new track “Dangerous” is the first taste of that new material.  It’s an incredibly sexy dark pop number.  I can’t think of any other way to describe so enjoy and tell us what you think.

Slow Jam from Diarrhea Planet

diarrheaUp until now, the music from Diarrhea Planet has been heavy-hitting, which I definitely enjoy, but it’s nice to see them slow things down a bit here on their latest single.  Don’t fret, they allow for some sonic eruptions, but only after slowly building their way up towards those moments.  I think it adds a different dynamic to their songwriting, and in doing so, they’ve made their upcoming album a more intriguing affair.  That record, I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams, arrives on August 20th, just a few weeks after you can catch them here in Austin at the Parish.

Show Preview: Mikal Cronin + A Giant Dog @ Mohawk (6.27)

mikal

Date Thursday, June 27th
Location Mohawk
Doors 7 PM – Show at 8
Tickets $10 from Mohawk

Many of you know Mikal Cronin as one of the guys that makes Ty Segall sound so incredible live, but the guy’s been putting out music with various outfits, not to mention his own solo work.  Recently, he released MCII, and I guarantee you that the album will end up on year end lists.  But, there’s two incredible openers that need your support.  Shannon and the Clams have been doing their own soulful garage rock for quite some time, always bringing the energy live.  Finally, be there by 8 to catch local band A Giant Dog, who feature members of OBN IIIs and Bobby Jealousy…that alone should be enough to get you out.  Plus, if you stay around afterwards you can catch local boys Sweet Talk  and Act Rights.

Another Track From Béisbol

I just saw Beisbol last friday after the Baths show. They were good. They mentioned another track that would be available for download. They played the track and I liked it. The Portland group based around the Brothers Burian are nice people.

Anyway, more catchy jam action, this time a little lower in the tempo department. You can stream the whole album, Lo-Fi Cocaine, over on their Soundcloud. Go see them if you get a chance. Tell ’em the photo guy in Austin that made them stand in front of walls sent you.

Fresh New Music from The Proper Ornaments

properornamentsA few years ago, I was haunted by the music of the Proper Ornaments, which is odd, considering they only had a handful of tunes available.  But, our friend Toby at Finest Kiss pointed out that the band had a new single, and an upcoming LP on the way.  What I like about the band’s direction is their inclination to slow things down a bit, in comparison to early works; the melodies are softer and the guitar seems to carefully traipse about in the foreground.  It all leaves you with an airy listen, yet comes across just as powerful as the early workings of the group, if not more so.  Enjoy this single: available on Lo Recordings.

Date Tonight, June 25th
Location Continental Club
Doors 9 PM
Tickets $10 at the Door

We’ve talked about The Happen-Ins many a time, not to mention our adoration for our boys Grape St. I mean, come on, we put out that band’s record.  But, not only do the bands get to grace the historic venue, I’m also excited for Badgerzz. What?! You haven’t heard of them? Well, up until awhile ago, I hadn’t either, though their main man Michael Booher has been a large part of the Austin scene for quite some time.  He was one of the members of now defunct Zykos, and he’s been batting around as a solo act for a bit.  Badgerzz is his new act, and I’m assured you’re all going to be really pleased with what he brings to the table.  We hope to bring you more from Michael as we get it. Awesome show for a Tuesday…not to mention the rad poster.

Dent May Brings More Great Pop Music Our Way

Dent MayDent May is a musician who has long been a favorite around these parts as we’ve consumed and enjoyed every release throughout his short career.  Well Dent’s returning in 2013 with a new album entitled Warm Blanket hitting stores on August 27th via Paw Tracks.  Prior to that date, you can find new single “Born Too Late” below to enjoy in your free time.  It’s more of a return to the lounge act pop music that Dent originally started his career with and blew up in the indie scene.
