Enchanting Pop From Forest Fire

forestfireForest Fire is a band that seemingly blew up over night a few years ago with the release of Survival, but have since cooled off quite a bit while quietly releasing new album Staring at the X in 2011.  Well the band are returning in 2013 with a planned new album entitled Screens coming our way on September 10th via Fat Cat Records.  Below you can find the first single “Waiting in the Night” made available a few days ago.  It’s a bit of a slow bunner pop style song with beats and guitars that remind me of earlier style Yeasayer.  I have no problem with that.

Austin Spotlight: New Crunchy Track from Not In The Face

Not In The FaceAustin’s Not In The Face has been making quite a name for themselves for the last few years, melting faces with their brash rock n’ roll and outrageous live shows.  They’re wrapping up work on a brand new EP, and they’ve let us share one of these new jams with you all.  Now that the band has moved up from a duo to a tight-knit four piece, their sound is huge, as witnessed in this track.  The vocals have the classic rock swagger, but the music just sounds ready built for arenas–in a good sense.  This is definitely a track that’s going to burst some ear drums, so keep an eye out for a great rock show near you; the band has dates in Ft. Worth, Austin and Houston in early August.

Breezy Surf Pop From La Luz

_MG_1873asm_1__small.1La Luz is a band that we’ve followed for awhile so we were excited to hear that the ladies had recently signed to one of our favorite labels Hardly Art.  With new album It’s Alive coming in October, the band are previewing the new LP with this new track “Big Big Blood”.  As we’ve come to expect from the band, the song has a surfy undertone to it with swooping vocals similar to fellow female bands like Dum Dum Girls or La Sera.  This should definitely be an album on your radar this fall.

She SirI know how Wednesday goes.  You leave work, hit up Hump Day Happy Hour, then you take it a little too far.  So you want to go out and have a blast with your friends.  Where to go? Tonight there’s a great local show with some of our favorite acts, playing over at Holy Mountain starting at 10 PM.  Easy Tiger will be opening up the evening right at the start, and they’ll be followed by our dear friends, She Sir.  That band just can’t stop writing great pop tunes, so you need to be there.  And, as if that wasn’t a good enough night, Migrant Kids are going to close things down in an excellent fashion.  You want to celebrate Hump Day in style? Chapter Music To Release New Record from The Ancients

the-ancients.2Seems like it’s been a good couple of weeks for our dear friends over at Chapter Music in Australia.  They let loose a few hits late last week, and they’re right back at it with the announcement that they’ll be putting out the new album from The Ancients. While the song warms to your ears slowly, the beauty that unfolds is something quite remarkable.  Be it the effortless pop vibe or the gentle delivery of the vocals, it’s a song that really deserves as much praise as you can offer.  It’ll be featured on Night Bus, which sees an October 18th release date.  Chapter deserves awards this year for sure.

Fresh New Music from Saint Motel

Saint MotelHopefully you heeded our advice and caught Saint Motel‘s most excellent live show at Red 7 a few weeks back, but if not, then you’re lucky we’ve got a new tune for you to get ahold of today.  Our friends are currently working on writing new material for their next album, and they’ve allowed us to share the first hit (of many more I’m sure) from said record.  There’s horn’s a plenty, but it still maintains the group’s knack for gang vocals surrounding swelling pop moments.  If you’re down in spirit today, then just one listen will get you going; you should also revisit Voyeur…it’s a dandy.

Keep It Pop with The Hongs

hongsAs the title mentions, I’ve been in a pretty pop-centric mood today, trying to stay up on my toes.  So, in that vein, it’s only appropriate that I bring you a new track from The Hongs.  Sure, there’s a bit of a darker underbelly hiding in the song, but if you just stick with the vocals, you can tell that the Florida group definitely have aims to brighten your day.  Other such tracks from the band are currently being offered up on the group’s upcoming Pet Scans EP.  If you’re down to enjoy yourself today, give this track a spin.

Dark Synth Pop from Nerves

nerves_mailchimpLet’s all enjoy a little bit of throbbing synth pop today, courtesy of Australia’s Nerves.  From the start, the song pulses energetically, with Cat Hughes haunting voice, reminiscent of the Knife, smoothly operating atop the beats.  It’s a tune that allows you to stomp your feet frivolously, yet at the same time still revolves around the sound of the vocals.  I have a feeling that a lot of people are really going to gravitate towards this track, and you can find more such tunes on the group’s new Crooked Bones EP.  Tasty.

New Music from Boogarins

boogarinsI don’t typically gravitate towards songs with languages other than English, as lyrics are pretty important to my listening experience. That being said, there’s something about Brazil’s Boogarins that made me gravitate towards their sound.  I can hear little elements of psych, but also a central focus on simple pop harmonies…those being portrayed primarily through the tones of the vocals.  The band has recently signed on with Other Music Recording Co. to release As Plantas Que Curam on October 1st.   Definitely interested to see where their music goes for an entire full length.

On Your Radar: Mainland Comes to Austin @ Cheer Up Charlies

mainlandA few weeks ago, I caught wind of this catchy bit of pop from Mainland, a band that hasn’t really been around for too long.  I indulged in a few listens, found myself bobbing my head and tapping these old toes, so I figured it’s best if I shared this with you all, especially since the band is coming our way tomorrow night for a special set at Cheer Up Charlies.  The title of their new EP is Girls Unknown, and you’ll definitely find yourself nodding along to these summery tunes.  Nothing wrong with a good old fashioned pop track.
