Austin Spotlight: Classy Nude Release Split w/ Quitters + 7″ Release Show

classyOne of the acts I’ve been keeping a close eye on, Classy Nude, is releasing a split with another such act, Quitters.  Both Austin acts specialize in crafting pop tunes centered around well-written guitar chords, leaving listeners with hooks to tap their toes to today. CN has been kind enough to share their part of the split 7″ with us, and we’re happy to share that track with you as well.  If you like what you hear, you can order the 7″ HERE, or you can head out to Hotel Vegas on Thursday night to pick one up in person from both bands.  That bill also includes other heavy local hitters like Act Rights, Poppy Red and RF Shannon. Dig the tune below!

Part Time – PDA

MEX130-Cover-500Rating: ★★★★☆

San Francisco’s Part Time already have one album under their belt, but it’s their newest record, PDA that really shows the group’s acceleration into the upper tier of small-time indie bands.  This collection of songs is filled with dreamy touches and swinging guitar lines that allow for musical escapism of the best sort, letting you drift into the caverns of your mind.

Opening numbers “I Want to Go” and “How Do I Move On” set the emotive quality of PDA, bringing in guitar lines that, while angular, maintain an essence of escapism, encouraging you to let yourself go as those chords seem to drift into the distance.  The haunting warmth of David Speck’s vocals on these tracks further push you into a state of mind that leaves you relaxed; these aren’t forced sounds, rather they unfold slowly as dream pop should.

Of course, Part Time isn’t here merely to lull you to sleep with their melodies.  They also push you towards that slow 80s body sway, especially on a song like “Living in the USA.”  For my two cents, this track wouldn’t be out-of-place in a lot of nostalgic dance collections, though it maintains a softer touch, perhaps perfect for a closing dance scene in a John Hughes flick.  Similarly, “Sonando de Ti,” uses the group’s synth-orchestrated backbone to kick things off into a sultry groove.  It never hurts, for this listener at least, to have lyrics thrown my way in Spanish.  But, while the group’s nod to the past is definitely fresh in sound, the group fares far better when they employ more prominent guitar work.

“I Belong to You” is the track from PDA that resonates the most.  The vocal delivery is lackadaisical, yet still has an element of smoothness to it that makes things endearing.  All the while the guitar chords provide a crisp cut throughout, increasing my willingness to float away in my mind with this number.  Also, the guitar chords make way for a wash of synths on and off, which serve a nice accent, but don’t dominate the track as they do in other spaces on the record.  Attention to detail goes a long way to making this one of the tracks that stands out in the ears of the listener.

While the opening moments hint at a collection full of dream pop hits, Part Time clearly has other place they’re willing to journey off into, such as “Funny Moods” with its bouncy rhythm.  This actually serves the whole of PDA well, as you don’t get stuck treading in one place, one sound.  You’ll find yourself getting carried away, yet you’ll be pulled into the songs as you explore the intimate details lurking here and there.  It all leaves you with a diverse listening experience that both excites you and allows for escapism…the perfect blend for a solid album.

Hunx & His Punx Rocking Out Again

Hunx & PunxLast year’s Hairdresser Blues brought us the softer side of Hunx, but now that he’s working with his Punx again things are amped right back up.  This new tune from his upcoming Street Punk LP is a quick little blast with jagged guitar word and breakneck speed…it’s over in just over 1.5 minutes.  It seems there’s definitely two sides to Mr. Hunx, and I’m always down to listen to both.  The newest release will be coming your way on July 23rd via Hardly Art Records.

Location Red 7

Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

If you frequent this website, I really shouldn’t even have to begin telling you about my love affair with all things Appleseed Cast.  Hell, I’ve likely seen the band more than any other in my history of attending live shows.  Cool?  With that said, you know I will be in attendance when the band headlines at Red 7 tomorrow and I’ll also likely be screaming along like a school girl to every word.  The undercard of this bill is surely something you won’t want to miss either with The Life and Times, Muscle Worship, and Phantom Lakes all joining in on the fun.  It’s never too late to get on this bandwagon.  Be smart.

FFF8 Lineup Leaked – 3Day Passes @ 10am

Date Nov 8,9,10
Location Auditorium Shores
Doors 11am (Show up Early)
Tickets On Sale @ 10am

The internet had the scoop overnight on the lineup for this year’s FunFunFun Festival, or as I call it, three-days-of-chasing-bands-with-a-camera-so-too-busy-to-catch-a-buzz Fest.

I am sure we will have previews galore, but the lineup this year has many alums of previous iterations with plenty of new faces to go along with the mayhem on three-by-two stages. The short list of jams – Slayer, Thee Oh Sees, Cut Copy, Kurt Vile, Television, The Walkmen, Johnny Marr, Delorean, Chromatics, Snoop, The Men, Descendents, Bonobo, Small Black, King Kahn, and oh soooo many more. If you can’t find a band you like in this line up, you suck at music listening and festivals.

Full list of leaked bands after the break…

Update: Poster is out, leaks are fun.

Music.

Comedy.

New Tunes from Islands

islands17We’ve long been fans of Islands, not to mention the various other projects by Nick Thorburn (especially Human Highway), so we’re always happy when he pops up with a new song. His group are back, after a little over a year, with a brand new album titled Ski Mask; it hits stores in September.  The first single we get to here builds really slowly, but jumps off into the collage-o-pop masterpiece that has made Nick so endearing over all these years.  Plain and simple, the guy knows how to write catchy tunes.  Listen and see.

moondoggiesATH is fond of Hardly Art band Moondoggies and you know this.  Already this year we’ve heard new track “Red Eye”, and now the band are offering up another great song called “Midnight Owl”.  Again you can hear the Americana influences from the band with some great swirling guitars and a mellow folky style.

New album Adios I’m a Ghost will drop Ausgust 13th via Hardly Art.

More New Pop From Papa

tx3p_PAPAflagTravisSchneider_1Papa is a band that I’ve posted about on this site before and I’ve grown to enjoy their music the more and more I listen.  Just a month ago I posted up new track “If You’re My Girl, Then I’m Your Man”, and the band are already back with this great new pop track “Young Rut”.  Similar to the older tune, this one has an incredible driving sound with some spooky, dark vocals over everything to create one special pop track.

Stay tuned for a release date for Papa’s debut album coming this fall on Loma Vista.

Austin Spotlight: Love Inks Announce Album

loveinksThose of you who were elsewhere Saturday night missed the mesmerizing set by Love Inks that closed out the Rockaway Beach Party at Hotel Vegas.   On the heels of that remarkable performance I awoke today to find news that the group had announced the release of their new album, Generation Club; it’ll be released on September 24th.  Their lead single for the upcoming release has a hypnotic beat that vibes throughout, whilst lead singer Sherry Leblanc cooly let’s the warmth of her vocals float atop.  Songs like this one, and a live show to back it up, show that the band is poised for a really incredible end to 2013.

They’re Back: The Terry Malts Announce New Album/Single

terrymaltsOh man. Monday rules.  I can’t tell you how excited I am for the return of one of my favorite bands, The Terry Malts. Their debut album still gets spins, but we should all rejoice knowing that they’ll be back with Nobody Realizes This is Nowhere on September 10 via Slumberland Records.  Their first tune from the album definitely has that chainsaw buzzing guitar accompanied by infectious bass lines and precision drumming.  I really can’t say enough things about this band, on record or in the live setting; they kill, simple as that. Enjoy this new jam.
