New Music from Jack Name

jacknameWe feel like kicking things off on Monday should start with a little bit of introspection, but a whole lot of grit, providing you with some energy to jump into the week with just the right amount of spirit; I think this jam from Jack Name will do just the trick.  It’s a lo-fi sort of affair, with sharp distorted guitars cutting in and out of the track.  You’ll find low-end vocals beneath the front of the mix, possibly hearing a bit of Frank Black affectation.  The project will be releasing Light Show on January 28th via God? Records, followed by a show that lands the band in Austin on February 8th.

Painted Palms – Forever

foreverRating: ★★★☆☆

When you’re given the personal stamp of approval from Kevin Barnes that becomes a pretty big deal, but it’s how one lives up to those expectations that really cements a group’s legacy.  Throughout the duration of Forever, you can hear what Barnes saw in Painted Palms; the record is brimming with melodies and hooks, making for a strong debut.

“Too High” opens up Forever, with this pulsating electronic beat before the playful vocals jump into the fold.  It’s a track that rests during the verses, then bursts forth exuberantly during the chorus.  It’s a pretty tried and true formula, and one that surely will find toes tapping and heads bobbing.  But, the record doesn’t jump too far off this beaten path for the first few tracks, though some of the pacing is alternated around the formula.  However, “Forever” definitely ups the ante from the moment you press play.  It’s got this weird vibe to it, relating to the realm between Of Montreal and early MGMT; you know you all love that.

For my ears, “Soft Hammer” is where I see Painted Palms excelling.  The track features one of the clearest vocal performances on the album, but it’s the structural building of the song that’s really compelling.  There’s more of a folk approach to begin the tune, yet it builds this increased tension for a time by piling an electronic instrumental wash atop it all, then reverting to where it all begin.  By controlling the melody throughout, and holding onto it until the end, I realized just how much of a grasp the duo has on perfecting harmonies; this is evidenced through the entirety of the effort.

While I felt like some of the songs suffered by the production, at least in regards to the sound of the vocals, there’s definitely more than a number of hits that are going to be pleasing for the ears. You can take some of the previously mentioned tracks or you could just jump in at “Spinning Signs,” which employs a pulsating bounce that drives the track home for the listener.  Or download “Empty Gun” and you’ll be rewarded again with gratuitous hooks and sugary melodies that have made the band such a staple in the Interwebs.

My experience with Forever ended up being varied.  There’s definitely a bunch of tracks I’ll be playing over and over again for some time, but there were also some disposable songs that might have molded my opinion of the album early on during my listening.  One thing’s for sure though, Painted Palms aren’t going anywhere, and this record is the perfect place to start making a name all on their own.

Rocking Out with Protomartyr

protomartyrWe don’t want our good friends at Hardly Art thinking we forgot about them, but they make things easy by putting out such solid jams as this one by Protomartyr. Their latest signing, Protomartyr, have this great darkness in their approach, which owes a great deal to how the vocals were recorded.  Me? I love the angular approach to the guitar playing, pushed right up against this bouncing rhythm section.  You’ll find the tune only gets better as the band jumps off energetically from time to time throughout the track.  The excellent label will release Under Color of Official Right on April 8th.

Enjoy Your Evening With Bloom

BloomEvery once in a while I catch a song I missed. This is an absolute beauty from 2010, a relative oldie for our rapid and rabid appetite, by a group called Bloom.

Hypnotizing, soothing, use it when you get home from your Free Week outing to chill. Or perhaps a little “quality time” with a certain someone… You people have dirty minds. Jeez.

The group is Jake Perrine and Michael Maricle and based in Seattle. For fans of The Album Leaf. Nothing released since 2010, so anyone in the Northwest feel like updating me, please do.

Happy Diving to Release EP with Father/Daughter Records

happyIt’s clear that over the last couple of years, gutiar music has returned, though I suppose it never went away completely.  Happy Diving are the latest act to come our way, offering up a heavy dose of guitars, while still having these hidden moments of pop sensibility lurking in the sound of the vocals.  Just imagine a loud swell of hooks and noise combining into an effortless wave meant to destroy your ears and you’ll get the picture being pushed out by these East Bay Boys.  They’ll be releasing their self-titled EP digitally via Father Daughter Records next week, with a cassette version to follow later in February.

New Jamz From Speedy Ortiz

40

Who knows what it is with me and rock music accompanied by driving female vocals.  It’s been documented multiple times on the site so I’ll save you the re-hash of my love for the genre and get to the point of sharing with you this new tune by Speedy Ortiz called “American Horror”.  It’s a straightforward rock number with the aforementioned sweet lady vocals giving us something to hang on to throughout.  Dig it.

Check out new EP, Real Hair, on February 11th via Carpark Records.

Austin Spotlight: Summer Swells

944816_682268098470608_177123419_nOur apologies to those in Austin who knew about Summer Swells before we did.  This shit happens sometimes man.  With that out of the way, check out this track from the local boys called “House on the Edge of a Hill”.  To me, the band combines this crazy mixture of The Walkmen’s best guitar melodies with modern country twang.  Sounds like Austin to me.  If you’re a fan of the tune, check out more from these guys on their bandcamp page with recent EP Old Gold

Rock Out with Cheatahs

995807_542357282467041_1095715952_nThis tune, “Get Tight”, from UK based band Cheatahs has struck a chord with me today and I wanted to share it with you guys.  It’s a great washed out rock tune from a band prepping their debut release for late winter times.  I’m expecting great things from these guys in the future.

The band’s new self-titled debut will be available on February 11th via Wichita Recordings.

New Music from Hospitality

hospitalityWhat a difference an album can make!  The first effort from Hospitality was a joy, filled with catchy folk-influenced tunes that you could sing whilst still feeling a bit introspective.  But, as evidenced by their latest tune, which is slated to be on their new record, Trouble, they’ve taken things into a more sinister place, at least in so far as the mood created.  I also think their sound has expanded, filling out some of the empty space that may have been present on their first effort. This tune definitely has me intrigued, wondering if they can maintain their exuberance while going darker (you can hear another tune HERE).  I guess we’ll all find out when Merge releases the album on January 28th.
