Fresh Tunes from Rat Columns

ratcolumnsI haven’t written about Rat Columns in quite some time, but stalking the great Sydney label RIP Society proved fruitful last week when I found that they are soon to release the next record from the RC, Leaf.  This is the first single, and while the wash of keyboards might heavily influence your decision to love or hate this track, I suggest you digest the great guitar work going on within the tune.  There’s an urgency in the playing that’s really hard to ignore, and while it holds a certain sense of edginess, it’s wrapped in this sensible pop overcoat.  You can find a video for the track HERE.

Nothing Covers Low

nothingIt appears that my offerings on this Tuesday are going to be a bit up the sad bastard stream, or the slow core or whatever other genre we can toss at the downtrodden tunes.  This tune’s great; it was great the first time Low did it on Things We Lost in the Fire.  Now, however, it’s being retouched up by rising star, Nothing.  I love the fact that the song still captures the emotion of the original; it still sounds just as frail as it did originally, showing that the band is covering this for more than just kicks.  It clearly has meaning to the group, as it does for me, so perhaps you’re one of those folks too who’ve always been attached to the craftsmanship of Low.  Give this a listen and see how you feel.

New Music from Ides (Alanna of Joanna Gruesome)

idesLast year’s Joanna Gruesome LP really put the band on everyone’s map, so when something related pops up, it only makes sense that we’d give it a look-see.  Ides is the project of Alanna, who really seems to have found her own voice away from the band, not that I’m encouraging her to leave; it’s just a nice outlet I’m hoping.  The song’s pretty heavy for the most part, spanning nearly five minutes of this haunting vocal beneath these deep guttural guitar chords.  It’s funny that even on her own Soundcloud page, she describes the sounds as #sadcore, which is definitely fitting, though possibly selling herself short.  If you’re looking for some introspective music today, go HERE and listen to more from Ides.

Another Great Track From Shoreline Is

avatars-000069886838-rdz3sr-t500x500Just about a month ago, I shared a great new song from Dortmund based indie group Shoreline Is.  Today I’ve got another stunning, quiet pop tune from the band called “Broad Day”.  I really dig the way the vocals here fit into the song in this rather quirky, yet delightful way.  All in all, it’s a great lil’ pop tune.

Still no word on an official release date for the band’s new album.  We’ll keep you posted.

Brand New Music from Elvis Depressedly

1397495_529327397160841_2064241759_oEver since I first encountered the work of Coma Cinema, I’ve become a bit of an obsessive about the music being created by Mat Cothran.  His other project, Elvis Depressedly, has a brand new record coming out pretty soon, and this new jam is the perfect reason for you to follow both projects; it’s indicative of the incredibly intoxicating touches he’s put on the music world.  Cothran’s voice in particularly draws me in on this new track, but it’s also the slightest arranged touches that really pull at your soul, be it the faint strings or the snapping of fingers.  There will be a new record from the project titled New Alhambra coming out later this year.

ACL 2014 Lineup Announced

ACL 2014The two-weekends of ACL will be headlined by the nineties. Eminem, Pearl Jam, Beck and Outkast are joined by newbie Skrillex on the top of the marquee. Those of you that bought Weekend Two passes will get the musical stylings of Lorde. Meh. As usual, the alleged top tier will be the soundtrack to our exit.

While we aren’t giddy about the headliners here, we are pretty thrilled with the meat of the lineup. Interpol, Belle and Sebastien, Real Estate, St Vincent, Broken Bells, Tune-Yards, Polica, Cults, The Rosebuds, Phantogram, CHVRCHES, Temples, Miniature Tigers, Mac Demarco, The Replacements, Chromeo, SNOWMINE (WE1), Beat Connection (WE2) and what will likely be the best thing you see all festival JAGWAR MA!

New Music from Bored Nothing

boredA few years back, a friend of mine posted this great list of rising acts out of Australia; it included acts like Pop Singles, Royal Headache and more, but one of the ones I really gravitated towards was that of Bored Nothing.  I’ll admit that part of it was the style of recording, but another part of my enjoyment was the resemblance to a world where emo music met Elliott Smith, with just a splash of bedroom stylings.   Still, if you’re in touch with what’s going on today in the Aussie scene, then you can definitely hear where the music of Bored Nothing fits in. Give a listen to this brand new track to see if it’s up your alley.

Quick Number from The Wind-Up Birds

wind upLooks like one of my favorite acts will be releasing a new album this May.  The Wind-Up Birds came to my attention a few years back, and I’ve really enjoyed the work they’ve put in so far.  This new tune is the first single off their new record, Poor Music.  I love the way the guitars sound, while the vocal delivery definitely bears some resemblance to Art Brut.  Be it the jagged guitar or the way they quickly burst into a more forceful music foray within the tune, it still catches my ears.   Look for their new record just before the summer hits.

There’s a ton of heavy-hitting shows in town this week, from Vampy Weeks to Mogwai…and beyond.  But, you should start your Monday night with something particularly special, something loud; you should get your week going by hitting up the Odonis Odonis show at Mohawk tonight!  We’ve mentioned the band on numerous occasions, but now that we’ve had ample time to have our ears destroyed (willingly) by the group’s new album, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, I’m adamant that this show is something you can’t miss.  But, I warn you, your going to need to get your ears checked afterwards, just to make sure they’re still working right.  They’ll be joined by Shockwave Riderz and Super Thief, so be sure to schedule in some time for this can’t miss evening of tunes.
