AJ Davila Readies New LP + Davila 666 Compilation

Celebrities Visit SiriusXM Studios - July 11, 2014RayRay and I both spent (spend) a lot of our times surrounded by Spanish influenced tunes (thus our love for Juanes), so it would be shameful if we weren’t into the work of AJ Davila.  He’s probably best known for his work with his friends from Puerto Rico, Davila 666, but he’s been stepping out on his own for quite some time; I caught two sets by him at this years SXSW.  His new project, AJD y Terror Amor is releasing Beibi via Burger Records on November 4th, but they’ll also have a compilation for D. 666 titled Pocos Anos, Muchos Danos, collecting the group’s singles together.  You can rock to a few tracks from each release below my friends.

Exclusive Premiere: Balmorhea Single Remastered

balmorheaThere’s been a lot of press lately for Austin’s Balmorhea, as the band readies a new 7″ on Western Vinyl.  But, not only do you get to hear some new songs, but the label is also re-releasing a remastered version of their self-titled masterpiece.  The song below, “Baleen Morning,” was already a beautiful piece, but the remastering touch ups has added even more power and emotion to the band’s construction; I love how you can hear the buzz of the strummed guitar sings.  There’s a beautiful ornate quality that really shines through with the remastering, reminding listeners how incredibly lucky we are to have a band crafting such music.  You can pick up the remastered version (as well as the new 7″) HERE.  And look for a chance to win tickets to the group’s show at Central Presbyterian on 10/24.

Soft Piece of Pop from Manna

manananaDespite my tendencies for great rock n’ roll as of late, there’s still a softy inside.  That guy, though rare, really enjoys a powerful ballad, especially when its strung around the backbone of a piano.  Manna‘s voice could easily carry the track, which is apparent in the song’s early moments, though there’s some extra accompaniment to fill in areas of space within the song.  It’s just another slice of grandiose pop from the Finnish singer, who’ll be releasing her record, Blackbird, at the end of the month in her home country, though those of outside will have to wait until early 2015 for our own copy; look for the release via Soliti.

Why Not Post About Meeks?

mepI have absolutely no idea what any of the ideas on this song are about, nor do I really care.  It sounds like absolute gibberish, but that’s probably because I don’t speak Japanese.  Still, there’s something undeniable about this track, which came out in Japan a while ago.  Meeks had never even made my radar until the reliable Jigsaw Records decided that digging it back up and releasing it Stateside would be genius. I tend to agree.  Sometimes a song or a band grabs you, and no matter the language, there’s an inherent quality that bonds you with that.  Today, I’m all about the Meeks.

Powerful Punk from Nots

notsThe ladies in Nots have been fleshing out their sound as of late, moving from a two-piece act to a four piece.  With that move, the group completes their sound, filling in the furious pounding rhythm section with a bit of synthesized noise.  In the end, the group is left with this rash rocker that’s as infectious as it is forceful.  But, like all great punk shorts, the song comes in under 1.45 minutes, giving you a glimpse of the work, but not overstaying its welcome.  Look for the debut from the band, We Are Nots, coming your way on November 11th via Goner Records.

Have Some Fun with The Dead Ships

thedeadships_songpremiere1When you hear a quality rock song like this one from L.A. based The Dead Ships, you just want to share it with as many people as you can.  The song is called “Canyons” and features some great moments of pop music intermixed with rising crescendos and irresistible melodies.  Stay tuned for more as the band are currently working a new EP for next year produced by Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning.  You know it’s going to be good.

Delightful Power-Pop from EYELIDS

eyesMan. This EYELIDS tune just made my day.  It might mean much to a few that members of Decemberists and Boston Spaceships make up the core membership of this group, but when you’re writing great pop music that sort of thing doesn’t even matter.  They’ve completed the work on their debut album, 854, and things will surely look up once people hear this collection of songs.  There’s a brightness to the guitar work and a gentle quality that works with the melodies; it sort of reminds me of Teenage Fanclub or a more upbeat Pernice Brothers.  Jealous Butcher Records will release the LP on October 14th, so get your popcorn ready.
