Musical Poetry from Juan Wauters and Carmelle

11183_JKTHey. You. Do you have 13 minutes? Want to listen to some of the better lyricists in the indie realm? Well, then it’s best if you spend some time with the new EP from Juan Wauters and Carmelle. Juan released an excellent album last year, but it seemed drastically overlooked, so I hope people start to take notice of his work.  He’s working with his friend Carmelle for this great one track EP, with lyrical potency at the forefront. The music’s carefully done, but sitting in the background for the entirety.  You can grab the Wearing Leather Wearing Fur EP from Captured Tracks, or stream its brilliance below.

Chilled Pop from Hooton Tennis Club

hortonhootonFeel like today should is taking a turn towards all things European, so why not keep that going with the latest buzz act out of Liverpool, Hooton Tennis Club. Overseas they’re getting this weird lo-fi buzz, but while the style might fit, they’re playing is actually pretty tight-knit, making this song successful on many levels; it’s got a new classic sound, but it’s executed enthusiastically, so I can get behind the buzz in this case.  You’ll be able to pick this song up on the band’s new 7″; it’s being released by Heavenly Recordings on February 24th.

New Music from Autumns

10495859_642109639242198_1535540511571641541_oI always try and keep my eye on a few certain labels, knowing they’ll always have something interesting up their sleeve, which is precisely the case for CF Records.  They’ve just signed up with Ireland’s Autumns to release the four song Blonde EP, which seems to me to be a collection of delightfully jangling noise pop tracks.  This single doesn’t go too far into the realm of the band’s noisier side, but you can hear those chugging jangling guitars pushing through quickly.  Their EP will be released in February, so keep an eye out for this one!

More Sonny & The Sunsets

So we’ve already given you some hype over this new Sonny & The Sunsets album, Talent Night at the Ashram, that’s coming out February 17th via  Polyvinyl Records, but when Sonny Smith gives you another tasty track to jam to, it’s really hard not to share the love. The song below, “Happy Carrot Health Food Store,” is quite long, but by no means boring. Sonny & The Sunsets have seven minutes of quirky rock and roll for you in their classic style, which is anything but classic. Rachel from Field Mouse Records as Anomie

anomie-EP-coverOur friends over at Father/Daughter Records have had a busy week. The brought us the new Diet Cig track earlier this week, and now they’re bringing another catchy female-fronted pop track from Anomie, which is the recording project of Rachel of Field Mouse (no known relation to Field Mice!). This tune is a straight-ahead rocker; it’s the sort you just turn up to get some energy when you’re raring to go out. Her Anomie EP will be released by the label at the beginning of February (the 10th!), so if you just need a pick me up or a great song to send a friend, try this one on for size.

New (To You) Iron & Wine

Well, everyone knows and most likely loves indie folkster Sam Beam, or as you know him better, Iron & Wine, as he’s been making music under this moniker for over a decade now. For all you fans out there, rejoice, as Beam is releasing Archive Series, which is exactly what it sounds like: old tunes that accompanied his previously released musical material. Up first to be released is Volume No. 1, which is the companion record to his debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, and it includes the soft folksy track below. Enjoy and Archive Series Volume No. 1 is out February 24th on Black Cricket Recording Co.

SlowAs Free Week comes to a close this weekend, we hope that you’ve already gotten out and about support the locals ’round these parts, but if you haven’t, you still have time to layer up and brave the arctic tundra to enjoy living in the raddest city for live music and don’t forget to buy some merch from your favorite and do your part. Cotillon Brings Something New to Burger Records

coatyIf I told you Cotillon was on Burger Records and you hadn’t heard the band, you’d likely think the group would offer something in the vein of garage rock.  But, with this album, the label is continuing its efforts to branch out into new territory, having this latest single offer little more than just a tinkling piano and some vocals.  It’s a short little ballad, yet it’s one that continues to push my excitement for the self-titled effort from the one-man project (January 26th).  Think gentle and pretty, yet far from mundane.

I Love This New Wand Rocker

lordoftheringsOne of the more surprising efforts from last year was the debut from Wand, Ganglion Reef. It was an album filled with a great deal of modern tropes, from psych to garage, but it looks like they’ve focused more on the garage side, only they’ve turned up the volume a touch.  Their latest single has the band blasting in furiously, thought it slows down around the 2 minute mark for a nice walk in the park, all before smashing everything to bits as the song draws to a close.  In the Red will release their new effort, Golem, on March 17th of this year; it should be another great listen if we’re judging one song.

Austin Spotlight: Rose Selavy

roseyFree Week in Austin is all about discovery, or at least it used to be about discovery…so I’ve got one that I think deserves your attention: Rose Selavy. The group has fulfilled my need for someone new to bring some delightful indiepop to our fair city (She Sir can’t hold down the fort forever!). They’ve only got one single for you to hear, but it’s enough that it should entice you to catch their sets.  You’ll hear jangling guitars knifing their way through this song, using synth stabs and nice vocal touches to wrap you in the perfect warmth.  They’ll be playing Free Week at Holy Mountain on Saturday, so if you’re not afraid of the cold…this is a good solid spot to end up.
