Have a Nice Weekend

1962514_636580363075782_1160625406_oThe weather has lifted. That bright thing is the sun. Prepare for the cedar onslaught.

Here is a lovely little PYAITK jam from a band called Sego. I was checking out another little news bit about a Kitsune Maison release that is pending when a little trip to their Soundcloud to see what’s doing yielded a play of this song below. It is called “Wicket Youth”. Dig it.

Get Psychedelic With POND

1921130_10154653680885545_5771350610837661683_o

A few months back, we brought you a new track from Australia’s POND. but now that we’re closer to the January 23rd release of Man It Feels Like Space Again the band has released another single for our enjoyment. “Zond” below is whacked out, and I mean that in the best possible way: the whole thing feels like it’s been put through one of those space tunnels that make you think you’re spinning. It’s got these buzzy guitars and super reverb coated vocals that are out of this world, giving you the psychedelic rock track that you love and you know an alien would also probably get down to. This makes me quite excited to have a listen to the whole album, which sounds like it’s going to be brimming with more rad and funky tunes.

More Sharon Van Etten?!

sharonIt’s no secret that I love Sharon Van Etten and everything she does, so when I saw that she had more new music so quickly after last year’s stunning Are We There, I couldn’t wait to share it with you. “I Don’t Want t0 Let You Down,” runs along the same tone that she set on her last album, but with a bit more straightforward rock and roll that we’ve know Sharon to dabble in before. Her vocals are all power in their husky deepness and in the choral arc she really hits you with emotion– the track is simple and straightforward, but a delight to listen to.

Midge Ure is a name you should know, but you may not despite the iconic voice and contributions to music. Ultravox, Visage, solo albums, collaborations on so many things including producing and writing that little Band-Aid thing thirty years ago. Little known fact, he played all but the drums for that song (Phil Collins put down that track).

Anyway, Midge is playing an acoustic set at Cactus Cafe Sunday. I am excited. His 2004 album is on slow-burn in my catalog, lots of variety there and some real gems, dark to pop. Allegedly, there will be stories told and songs old and new. “Fade to Grey” is a desert island song for me. Pretty, pretty, pretty excited.

Here is a track from the last solo album called Fragile.

Lo-Fi Pop Jam From Day Wave

1401702_319002598283823_1492895837170020435_o

Apparently I’m big on the California sound this week, as Day Wave is a DIY artist from Oakland who has me dreaming of summer days with this track, “Total Zombie.” As soon as you hit play on the track below, you’ll note the Drums-esque vibe that Jackson Phillips, the man behind Day Wave has picked up on and made his own through this track. There’s a certain amount of surfy goodness that just makes you want to be strutting around on a boardwalk somewhere near the ocean without a care in the world. Hopefully we’ll have more smooth jams from Day Wave on his debut EP to be released in the near future. Expect big things.

Reggae Reissue from Bunny Lion

lionMy tastes have been all over the map lately, but I’ll always hold true to my love of chilled out reggae.  It’s always something I can turn to on long drives or sunny afternoons, so I’m excited I can now finally add some Bunny Lion to my collection.  It’s primarily the work of Linval Thompson’s gifts, who I’ve come familiar with through my fandom of Scientist.  The collection of songs is called Red, and the ten songs are seeing the re-issue treatment from Fantasy Memory, so why not wrap up your Friday with some chilled tunes from Jamaica.

Sweet Pop from Faith Healer

gottahavefaithThis song’s been floating around for a few days, and I hope you’ve had some time to digest it, but if not, I’ll give you that opportunity once again.  For starters, there’s only a certain sort of person that can pull this off, and my hats off to Faith Healer.  I haven’t come across this sort of indiepop in some time, offering such a strong sound filled with varying parts while still holding true to the style itself.  You could say it sounds huge, and that’s not your everyday indiepop fare, so look for Cosmic Troubles to come your way on March 31st via Mint Records.

Waterstrider Brings The Pop Funk

1978484_847699071915318_7854074846143757926_o

Waterstrider are a five piece from Oakland who first got their start back in 2011 and have evolved into the fully fleshed out sound that I have in this single for you below. “White Light” is a tight little number that features all the sorts of elements of a pop groove that you’re sure to love right away. It’s got eclectic percussion parts that remind me a little bit of Local Natives, and the falsetto vocals of Nate Salman really works well with the jangling guitars.  Now this band is unsigned and supposedly working on their debut full length record to be released sometime this year, but until then enjoy this song for all its fun and rejoice because you’ve almost made it to Friday.

Mellow Groove from Paperhaus

paprsWhen I think of DC, I always go straight to the punk roots of the city…still in love.  But, when listening to Paperhaus, I hear a band far from that…aside from the DIY aesthetic that has allowed the band to grow, crumble and rebuild. There’s this catchy groove, using a nice guitar pluck for some emphasis that works to offset the band’s slow-moving pace.  It reminds me of Austin’s Abram Shook running on-stage to join Built to Spill; I guess that’s a weird analogy, but I’m sticking to it. They’ll finally be releasing their debut LP, which is self-titled, on February 10th. Enjoy this ditty.

New Music from In Tall Buildings

tallestbuiltIf you’re looking to make your 2015 interesting, musically speaking, then I’m imploring you to take a listen to this new track from In Tall Buildings, then schedule picking up Driver, the new LP, on its release. This latest single shows the craftsmanship in the songwriting, creating these intricate little layers that serve as prime ear candy. The breath-y quality of the vocals also adds an interesting touch; it’s one of the many reasons I think you’ll find yourself peeling back layer after layer when you get a chance to get your hands on the full length; Western Vinyl is putting it out on February 17th.
