Indie Darlings Twin Peaks Get Ready with New Track

unnamedThis new tune from Twin Peaks was all over the Internet yesterday, so I felt like I would give you a chance to revisit it today.  On my first few spins, I can definitely tell that there’s a change in the winds, whether that’s temporary or permanent will be the question. They had a ramshackle Replacements feel on Wild Onion, but now they seem to be emulating a more folk-influenced groove…it’s something sunnier from the Cali side of songwriting.  The song does close out with a bit of a distorted guitar solo giving it an extra punch. As of now, it’s just a one off as they prep for a tour, so enjoy it…and we’ll hold out to see what direction the band heads in the future.

Goodly Thousands Bring The Jangle

Goodly Thousands are a three piece band that formed five years ago in the small city of Dundrum, but are currently based out of Dublin, Ireland. They put out their debut 7″ to much success, selling out that record and gaining a bit of attention. Now they’ve got this new song for you called “Sunshine Hair” which is a the title track off their upcoming EP, which is set to come out March 24th via Shelflife Records, so you know it’s gonna be great. This song already is– it’s got a kind of Pains of Being Pure at Heart jangly guitar riff that starts it out, but then the super crisp percussion kicks in and takes you down the road of twee. Looks like you won’t want to miss out on this band or their Sunshine Hair EP, which you can preorder here.

Skizzy Mars’ The Red Balloon Project is finally out

I7A6cgI’ve been enjoying Skizzy Mars’ music for a couple years now for one solid reason: it’s just good. He’s not the type of rapper that’s going to turn heads because he has clever word play–and there are those that would argue 90% of his songs are love songs or break up songs–but his songs are almost always a total package; nice beat, smooth delivery, catchy chorus, ambiance, vibe, etc. Skizzy Mars has been teasing his The Red Balloon Project for a while and it finally came out yesterday. He will be setting off on The Red Balloon Tour at the end of February. While he will not be coming through Austin, a leg of the tour will be coming through Texas (Houston and Dallas). The Red Balloon Project can be streamed from Audiomack or downloaded from iTunes. Skizzy Mars has two older mixtapes that can be downloaded for free from DJBooth. My favorite song from The Red Balloon Project is below.

Show Review: Zola Jesus @ Red 7 (02.03)

Zola JesusAfter a dreary and wet Tuesday, there was a last minute change in venues and door times from The Mohawk, but if anything, this seemed to draw more people to the warmth and comfort of Red 7. The eclectic hodgepodge sound of opener Deradoorian served as an interesting juxtaposition to the drama of Zola Jesus‘ pop music.

Sam Cohen Is Groovy

I don’t know anything Sam Cohen doesn’t lay his hands on that I don’t enjoy.  I was a fan of Apollo Sunshine and an even bigger fan of Yellowbirds, so his new work under his given name is just what I needed this week.  On this single, he’s begging you to typify his music; there’s some crunchier bits of Americana, but I can also hear the deranged recording process of Mr. Coyne. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that his debut effort under this moniker, Cool It, is being released by Easy Sound Recording; they’ve quickly touched a nerve in my listening rotation.  Look for the LP on April 28th.

Can’t Get Enough of Anthonie Tonnon

unnamed-3Pretty sure that this Anthonie Tonnon LP is going to be a secret hit in certain spheres of the world.  It’s like an elevated version of Jens Lekman, which I’m pretty sure everyone found endearing.  The production on his latest single is spot on, letting his voice take the lead, while still giving the instrumentation the proper impact.  This is the sort of pop music that makes me swoon; it’s warm and has this lofty melody that allows my heart to swoon like a giddy school kid. Look for Successor on March 3rd via Wild Kindness.

Perfect Pop From COIN

coin_mediumThis is COIN. We last talked about them in October of 2013 and this song popped up on my radar of things to listen to and I got around to it. Glad I did.

We are suckers for superbly executed power pop and COIN has it the formula in spades. Synthy flourishes, memorable chord structures and a wicked hook. There is something in the water in Nashville right now; they are happier people, I guess. This single is a hint of the record to come, Looking forward to hearing the rest. They are on the road for a segment of the current Grizfolk tour so DC, Philly, Boston and Brooklyn readers will be able to see them starting tomorrow night and on to the weekend and though I wasn’t wildly impressed with Grizfolk maybe COIN‘s set will make it worth the ticket…

Sorry I Missed This (ish): Froth

frothyOccasionally, when wading through the murky depths of recently released on Bandcamp, you find something worth sharing. Then, sometimes you have the misfortune of discovering that sweet garage rock single you just found actually came out a few months ago, but then you realize you don’t care and you’re gonna post it anyways. And THEN, you’re diving in to research about the band only to realize they’re apart of the Burger Records line up and have just released another single and have an upcoming LP for you to talk about. So meet Froth, a lo-fi four piece outfit from L.A. who will wow you with their jangly guitars and gritty rock and roll. The track below, “Postcard Radio” is off their forthcoming record, Bleak, which is out May 5th.

Other Lives Go A Slightly Different Direction

10917143_10152732535224958_8315073691152214820_oOther Lives, from Stillwater, OK, are essentially a household name in the indie world, making ominously beautiful tunes. After their 2012 release of Tamer Animals, they’ve taken their time to put out another album, but now they’ve returned with this new single and the announcement of their third LP, Rituals, which is set to come out on May 5th here in North America (preorder it here). Fittingly enough, the track is called “Reconfiguration,” and gone is the sweeping nature you grew accustomed to on those earlier records and in its place is more to appeal to your electro pop sensibilities. The track is still somewhat haunting, but its clear the band is going in a different direction than their first two records. What do you think?

Austin Spotlight: The Zoltars Are Back

the-zoltarsI feel sorry for those in Austin that aren’t hip to the Zoltars.  They might seem unassuming, but the vision of Jared Zoltar has kept the band crafting infections pop songs that deserve your attention.  And now, the band are returning with their 3rd LP, which, based on this single, should be a delight for listeners in our town and beyond. I dig the swagger that pervades this tune; it sounds like Jared’s on to something cool that you want to be part of.  They’re going the self-titled route for this effort, so look for that LP (and buy it) when Happenin Records tosses it out on February 24th.
