Crepes Bring Some Pop Rock

hahahahahWhile Melbourne, Australia has birthed the continuous pop genre of late, it’s mostly been focused on the lo-fi blend of the genre.  While the lads in Crepes definitely make a nod towards that direction, they wrap up their songs in a different blend, bringing the focus towards the listener’s connection with the vocals, definitely elevating this tune beyond the modern slacker-pop of the Australian city.  You’ll be able to find this tune and a few others on the band’s new EP, Cold Summers, which hits later this year.

Electronic Groove from Grounders

groundedWhen I first pressed play on this Grounders track, I honestly expected something a little different.  The first twenty seconds or so have this glittery electronic fold to them, leading me to believe it was going to be a hard-hitting piece of electro-pop.  But, rather than push forward with a heavy (beat-laden) hand, the band pull the pace, slowing things down to allow the track to unfold in a fashion that’s built more for foggy mornings than late night ragers. You’ll find songs such as these on the bands self-titled full length, which hits on May 12th.

Slide Away With Teenage Wrist

10830636_366688956856839_2991634572051626236_oIs it Friday yet? No? Well, since we’ve got one more day to go in the work week, I’m happy to share with you this Teenage Wrist track that will make you feel above space and time altogether. “Slide Away,” is a right grunge jam, with its fuzzily distorted guitars and shimmery percussion parts. This track sounds straight out of the 90’s, and the lyrics are pretty somber if you listen closely. Through this whole track I’m enamored with the balance of heavy and light that this band traverses with ease in the alternative rock realm. Teenage Wrist will have their debut EP coming out later this spring, so keep your eyes peeled for that gem.

Lo-fi Electro Pop From Dylan Ewen

1498984_631379460241468_1836459215_oSometimes when scouring the endless diversity of Bandcamp new releases, I occasionally find something worth sharing with you, dear reader, and today that something comes in the form of this weirdo electronically dominated track from Boston’s Dylan Ewen. “If I Was A Dog” has a campy feel to it, with synths dominating the melody and super fuzzy electric guitars interspersed through the mix. It’s a catchy little number that explores exactly what the title entails, and its apart of a brand new EP, Cry Vomit Repeat.

Another Fun LA Font Tune

LA FONT 4Just a short while ago we brought you one of the tunes from LA Font, offering you a glimpse at their oddly structured guitar pop, and today we’ve got another one for you.  My ears hear classic sounds of 90s alternative, at least in the way the hooks are built and the chords ring out.  One of the things I like about the group is that they seem to have this strange approach to songwriting, often times slinking their way through tracks, or purposefully stuttering in the song’s progression.  It’s different, yet still has this catchy quality to it.  Look to hear more such sounds on the band’s Hangtime Volume 1 EP, which hits on April 28th via Fleeting Youth Records.

Part Time Readying New Album

ptOne of my favorite things about Part Time is how well the David Loca maneuvers in and out of different genres, yet they’re all connected so the songs have this weird cohesion.  On the first single from the new album, there’s a noted difference in the way the vocals and lyrics are delivered; it’s casual, almost spoken-word, which feels like a new twist for the project.  You’ll still hear chugging guitar chords with a hint of jangling pop sensibility in the background, and it’s all leading to great promise for Virgo’s Maze; that new album will be out May 19th via Burger Records.

Dreamy Track from Weeknight

weekIf you’re looking for escapism via your musical listening, then you’re in luck if you turn on this new single from Weeknight.  The tune has this dark haunting quality, using jagged guitar chords to burst through the dense shadow of the track.  Sure, it falls in line with the nostalgic movement towards recreating the JAMC sound, but I’m impressed by the fact that it’s done with only two hands at the helm. This New York duo will release this new single on April 21st via Dead Stare Records, but you can stream the track below right now; I suggest you do!

Wonky Pop From Frog

frog Frog are an NY duo, and this song is weird as hell, so naturally I love it. “Judy Garland,” the track below, combines just about every genre you could imagine in one whirlwind song. It begins with rambling banjo and hillbilly folksy vocals, then somehow winds its way up to a synth-pop jam? Who knows how, but it’s purely magical. If you like this track, good news for you is that Frog is coming out with an LP, King of Blah which you can preorder here. Get to jammin’.

Welcome to the Waves of the Echo

woeIf you’re looking for something that’s washed in glittery guitar lines and a coat of smoky vocals, then perhaps you should spend your day with Waves of the Echo.  While the track might seem rather soft in its opening moments (and other moments throughout) there’s a definite emphatic punch that surfs in and out during the chorus.  There’s something anthemic lurking beneath the dreamier notes here, which will have fans of pure pop music swooning all over the place. The Finnish act will be releasing their debut Fading Daylight, Bright Nights this June, so stay tuned to these pages.
