Throwback Rocker From The Naturalists

Vines-Naturalists1-620x405I can’t say I’m in a particularly throwback mood today, but for those who are, this new track from Buffalo based The Naturalists is certainly for you.  Yes this song, “What Puts You to Sleep”, is a great sort of emo style throwback jam full of emotion and a powerful rocker sound.  Those guitars are pretty damn badass as well.

New album, Home Honey I’m Hi, is due out July 28th.

The Return of Air Waves

airyRecently, I caught up with the owner of Western Vinyl at our Austin Record Flea, and he pretty much made my day; he told me he’d be putting out the new Air Waves LP.  What? New Air Waves? I pretty much burned through at least one copy of Dungeon Dots, and I fawned over the band when they played last year at Red 7.  The group, which is the vision of Nicole Schneit, crafts such effortless pop, filled with these airy harmonies that float off into world, connecting with every listener.  Their new album, Parting Glances, will be released on September 18th via WV. Just listen for the beautiful drop into the chorus on the track below.

Fruits and Flowers Readies Compilation

ffI first stumbled upon the label Fruits and Flowers via their work with Michael O. of Mantles semi-fame. Like a good fan does, I come back to their page every few weeks to see what’s new, which is how I discovered this interesting 3-way compilation they’re putting together.  The comp features 4 tracks each from Michael O., Piano Movers and The Reds, Pinks and Purples.  I’m really attached to the track they’ve shared from the latter, and I hope giving it a listen will get you excited for this release too.

Single Premiere: Matthew Melton

Melton1 copyAll of us here in Austin were pumped when we heard about Warm Soda moving to town.  Of course this would mean we often get a first listen to new tunes before anyone else as is the case today.  For a bit of a twist, creative mind behind the band, Matthew Melton, is going solo for this effort.  Below you can find our exclusive stream of Melton’s new single called “Too Many Hearts Lack Lovers”.  Once again we are treated to some garage influenced pop music, but with an almost psych style twist from who is now one of Austin’s best up and coming songwriters.  Carry on friend.

Southpaw Records will release this track via 7″ single on September 15th.

More from Skittle Alley

skittlesFor a long while now, we’ve been praising the work of Skittle Alley, and they are slowly unleashing early versions of the tracks that will fill up their new LP. It’s light-hearted indiepop, filled with jangling guitar work, precision percussion and a really warm vocal.  These are the kinds of songs that true indiepop fans dream about.  The French act haven’t released much information on their upcoming LP, but the songs they’ve been leaking out are nothing short of superb…get acquainted.

Fun Night at the Mohawk Tonight – 5 PM

IMG_9665Tonight, and tonight only, you should come out and join us at Mohawk for some ATH DJ Session.  We’ll be playing some local vinyl, as well as my favorite garage, dance and indiepop hits…no laptops here folks.  But, as if joining us for Happy Hour at 5 PM wasn’t good enough to cure your Monday blues, our friends Plantation will be following our set indoors, joined by Ghost Bunny and Pleasures. Really, you could spend your whole night at Mohawk and have a blast.  Settle into your buzz while we play some hits, then enjoy some good tunes to round out the night. See you at 5 PM. Probably going to play this song.

Solemn Tune from Cape Snow

capesnowIf you’re a Sharon Van Etten fan, then you should take note, as Cape Snow looks to be the next big stunner from that genre.  The work is the combination of a long-distance friendship between Bree Scanlon and Dylan Metrano (Tiger Saw). Like the best work in this field, the voice of Bree is what shines the most; it sounds forlorn, but hits all the right notes.  Metrano’s instrumentation leaves plenty of room for Scanlon to shine too, never overdoing the work, never detracting from the song’ star. They’ll release their self-titled debut on July 31st via Burst and Bloom Records.

Demented Tape Pop from Creeping Pink

creepI’m a little bit scared of this Creeping Pink song honestly.  Sure, there’s this playful element in the way the core of the song goes, but the loops of drum explosions, placed atop varying levels of sonic accompaniment, eventually get warped into the track’s evolution.  The realm of safe pop dissipates, collapsing into this pulsating throb of electro-bedroom noise.  It’s an interesting spin on the modern trope, elevating the construction in a certain sense, and defying the rules.  It’ll be interesting to hear the entire Mirror Woods album; look for its release on July 13th via Castle Face Records.

Tam Vantage Now T.V.; Announces Debut Album

11402594_863094203762613_3487640641002569411_oI’ve hit you with several of the tunes of Tam Vantage, one of the former members of Pop Singles.  It looks like Tam’s rounded out the perfect line-up for his songs, and gone in to record the tracks for his forthcoming LP, Life in High Definition…doing it now as T.V.  The band’s latest single, “Do You Remember,” seems to hold true to the sounds of other Melbourne acts like Dick Diver or Twerps, but the recording (and the band for that matter) seem to have grander orchestration in mind.  They’ve added some solid piano backbone to the track, lifting it just a hint above Aussie guitar pop.  Look for this highly anticipated effort come September.

Having a Nice Weekend?

EqualityPretty exciting news yesterday, eh? There is going to be a lot of engagement parties and wedding invites going out soon. Get your wardrobe sorted. I took that pic yesterday.

I missed doing a Have A Nice Weekend post because work was nuts and I had to work through to a 4:30 happy hour call with friends celebrating the news in the 4th Street area. So I am posting this mid-weekend in hopes you’ll use it for getting ready to go out or when you come in from the party later tonight, perhaps hanging over tomorrow (safe rides, people, safe rides). It is called “The Floor” and is by an artist called Turtle. You can stream the entire EP on SoundCloud.
