Try Out the Latest from Presents for Sally

presentsforsallyYou know, Ft. Worth gets a lot of flack, as far as the music of Texas goes, but let’s not forget that it’s recently given us Leon Bridges.  And, bubbling below that hype machine is the excellent St. Marie Records, who do incredible work with bands of the shoegaze/realm.  Their latest push if for the UK act, Presents for Sally, who are set to release their album Colours & Changes this September.  Honestly, it reminds me of the last Pains of Being Pure at Heart record, with just a darker hint on the vocal tones.  Guitars slightly jangle, but atmospherics are kept in check to allow the unfolding of the pop sensibility.  It’s really hard not to enjoy this song, so have a great Monday.

Have A Nice Weekend

for esmeLet me start this HANW post with some show preview action…

I’ll be hitting up Tanlines and maybe even Starfucker tonight. Tanlines is at Red7, tix available here or at the door, MAS YSA is opening with doors at 9pm. You can get your Starfucker tix right here for their set at The Mohawk with Shy Boys, doors at 8pm. So many shows this weekend. Go out. Update: Well, both are sold
out now.
Now on to a little It Dept PYAITK. The song is called “You”. The band is called For Esme (no, not that Esme) and they are a three-piece out of Toronto. I don’t recall how I came across this track, I just know I added it to a bucket playlist I use for jams around the house. I realized I hadn’t shared it with you and because I care, here you go. It is alovely bit of Canadian dance pop goodness that is playful at times and head-down dance party at others. I love the balance here and I hope you dig it.

Trouble in Mind Records Sign Salad Boys

saladboysI feel like Trouble in Mind Records are trolling me lately, picking up on the talent of yet another Oceanic band, Salad Boys (after already working with Dick Diver). It’s actually a good thing, because there’s a lot going on overseas that deserves a wider audience.  Take this first single from New Zealand’s Salad Boys, which has the band rocking some of the best bits of straight ahead rock n’ roll I’ve heard this year; there’s no prefab concept, it’s just strong songwriting. I particularly enjoy the way the guitar works its way right through the core of the song.  It should make for a really interesting listen when the group releases Metalmania on September 18th via the TiM.

Spirited Number from Womps

wompsWe love to keep an eye on the Glasgow scene, mostly because we’ve got a few friends over there, not to mention that’s where one of our favorite bands was birthed.  So, when I got this single from Womps, I was really impressed.  It has that discordant feeling that puts it in the same vein of current stars like Wavves and what not, but production duties on their work has been handled by Steve Albini, so you know someone out there is going to be paying attention.  Honestly, it’s the best 90s college rock nod I’ve heard in some time. This tune will appear on a 7″ on September 18th while the band wrap up their debut album.

I’m Digging Sports

sportsI love real sports, but this is referencing Sports, the band, who’ve just signed on with Father Daughter Records to release their Sophomore album.  It’s a short blast of indie rock, bordering on the line between me and pop-punk; it reminds me of what Rilo Kiley might have been had they gone in a completely different direction.  In just over a minute, you’re tapping your feet, trying to sing along, all the while grinning with enjoyment. Their new effort, All of Something will be out on October 30th.  You have a minute? Enjoy your sports!

Fresh Cut from The Jet Age

jetageI’ve enjoyed the previous works from the Jet Age, so it’s good to see the band at it again, prepping a new effort, Destroy.Rebuild. Listening through the first single, I can definitely hear some of the Washington D.C. influences, at least in so far as lead singer Eric Tischler’s voice goes; it’s part Q and Not U, part Leo. Musically, the song owns this subdued guitar progression that works it’s way in and out, only to be interrupted by crashing bits of guitar noise turned way up in the mix.  It’s a good way to start out your Thursday…in my eyes anyways. Their new effort will be out at the end of August.

Mammoth Penguins Won Me Over

mammothMammoth Penguins just released their debut album, Hide and Seek, last week via Fortuna Pop, and it should come as no surprise that I’m in love with the effort.  The star of the show, and the most recent single from the group is Emma Kupa, formerly of my favorites Standard Fare.  I love her songwriting, not to mention the way the guitar sounds on the album; I guess her distinctive voice doesn’t hurt either.  But, I think any one that’s been into the guitar pop vibe the last few years will find that this is one of their favorite albums; for instance, if you like Gold Bears or Eternal Summers, this is the album for you.  You can grab it right now right HERE.

Amy Bezunartea Announces New Album

Amy Bezunartea

Amy Bezunartea

It wasn’t too long ago that Amy Bezunartea was impressing the ATH crew with her vocal performance as the opening act for Stephin Merritt. That alone, makes her worthy of a mention on any day, but we are also happy to share that she’s just announced a brand new album, New Villain. Like Merritt, Amy has a way with word play, with the music almost coming in secondary, though that’s not to diminish the work on this song.  There’s some careful little touches, from distorted chords to deep piano touches, leaving us with some great production work.  You’ll be able to grab the new album on September 25th via Kiam Records.
