Jeff Runnings Makes Solo Debut

jeffrunningsJeff Runnings is best known for his role with For Against, but he’s stepping out for the first time to make his solo debut, Primitives and Smalls. For someone who’s been crafting and building the dream-pop genre for three decades, it amazes me how vital his solo effort seems to the current musical landscape. For me, I love the vocal approach, and the way it sounds as if multiple voices are being layered atop one another simultaneously; it’s one I distinctly remember being introduced to as a kid growing up in the late 80s…something I miss in a lot of modern works. His album is being released by the esteemed Saint Marie Records on May 6th.

Brand New Big Wave Riders

bigwaveWhile we haven’t heard anything new from Big Wave Riders in a few years, rest assured that the band hasn’t left our mind since they released Life Less Ordinary. Lucky for us all the band are back with a brand new album and a brand new single to affirm their place in our listening hearts. While I love the song, musically, I think the band’s message behind the track is as important; the lyrical content focuses on a need to escape a world inundated by media horror stories in order to find something to believe in…being sunshine in this case. There’s light at the end of the tunnel folks, especially when Soliti releases Endless Summer later in 2016.

Happy Friday, Here’s Mons Vi

monsviSometimes tracks comes across the Internet that you just want to share with all your friends, and I think this Mons Vi track is just such a thing. There’s this jubilant structure to the song, but it’s not quite overly joyous, as the band coat the mix with a little bit of intentional noisiness. While the vocals seem to stay just on top, the band creates an emphatic performance behind, pacing the track as a whole. This song appears on the band’s brand new Self Help EP, which is currently available.

Austin Spotlight: The Blind Pets Are Coming

blindI’ve been listening to the new single from The Blind Pets this morning, and I think it’s something people should spin a time or two today. While the band get lumped in with our continuing Austin garage scene, I appreciate how this song takes on some slower moments for the chorus, illustrating that it’s not all meant to be a riot. But, the chorus is an energetic blast of fun, with a solo tagged on near the end for good measure. The band’s new album, Sharon is Karen will be out on April 15th via Sup Bob Records.

ATX Spotlight: More From Sharks in the Deep End

unnamed-2I am really beginning to find a whole lot to like about Austin band Sharks in the Deep End. The songs are essentially simple pop songs with catchy hooks and distinctive vocals to create something of their own. “Crash Test Doll” is the latest offering from the group and yet again I dig the pop sound with a bit of an edge to it. I suggest we all start paying attention to this band now as a local sure to blow up before we know it.

Killin’ Machine is out on April 16th.

Night Games Score Pop Hit

nightThis songfrom Night Games hasbeen around for a few days, and I’ve played it consistently since then. The electro backing to the track doesn’t even tell the story; I was captured by the way the vocals are delivered in the opening verse. The first few lines are repeated joyously, hitting some notes I couldn’t dream to pull off (mostly because I have a gruff man-voice). Sometimes songs just sink in, and this one definitely has me feeling good today. How are you going to tell me you don’t like this track?

Terry Allen’s Juarez Gets Reissued

taGrowing up in Texas, I feel like Terry Allen should be required in your listening education. While he’s possibly been overlooked, he’s always had a unique place in the pantheon of the state, with perhaps his best outing being Juarez (1975). Luckily for those of you who missed it (or didn’t have music obsessive dads like mine), Paradise of Bachelors is releasing his masterpiece, with a deluxe edition featuring tons of Terry’s art. Sure there’s Willie and Stevie, sure there’s Daniel Johnston, but Mr. Allen is a jewel no matter which way you spin it. The album gets reissued on May 20th.

New Music from Hooded Fang

hoodI’ve been thinking about what happened to Mike Sniper and Blank Dogs; it’s left a big void in my life of dark electronic influenced tunes…until this Hooded Fang came across. This seems like the natural progression of that style, although there’s definitely a more spastic element that recalls some early art-rock moments. Another benefit, is the work comes from a full band, and you can tell in the song’s structure that it’s more than just a sum of working parts, or pre-recorded parts. The band will release Venus on Edge on May 13 via Daps Records.

Lindstrom Is Back

lindyDon’t mind me folks, just sitting here jamming out on my lunch break, hoping none of my students walk in while I’m shaking it to this new Lindstrom. I love the fact that I can turn it up, bob my head, then suddenly there’s a subtle change in the song. It’s one of the finer touches of electronic tunes that I’ve recently rediscovered, so I have no problem pumping this track as it goes from sterile to blossoming with radiant atmospheric touches. This is our first listen to music from his forthcoming EP, which is slated for a release later in the year via Smalltown Supersound.
