Pop Rock from Clean Spill

cleanspillI’m a sucker for really well crafted pop rock, and I’m pretty sure that Cali’s Clean Spill fit that bill with this brand new single. It reminds me an awful lot of local Austin act Shivery Shakes, bordering the line between surf and indie, but always bringing hooks. There’s even solo that breaks down the track in the middle before the group comes in with some more swagger. If you’re looking for a track that makes you feel good just by listening, then I think you should hop on this one right away.

Dig the New Eagulls Track

eaglesThere’s definitely been some more noticeable acts taking a similar approach to that which Eagulls are using below. You’ll hear the utilization of dissonant guitar walls while the rhythm section serves to propel the song forward. But, what’s been striking me is the way the vocals seem to be sung from a distance. I know it’s been used many times before, but it’s interesting to see how various genres are using the same approach. Still, the moments of this track that take on a warmer melody are surely appealing. And Stereogum will probably post about this by the end of the day…so you know it’s cool. Look for their new album, Ullages (a play on their name, not on the real Eagles) on May 13th via Partisan Records.

WOMPS Announce Debut Album

wompwompIf you’re looking for the next big thing to come out of Glasgow(as I always am), then you should definitely keep an eye out on WOMPS. The duo packs a huge punch musically, and it’s hard for me to imagine that all this great noise can only come from two people. Still, take a listen to this emphatic piece of rock n’ roll, and then add them to your list of bands you want to know more about. They’re coming to SXSW this year to spread their sound, and I’m hoping you’ll catch on. The band’s debut, Our Fertile Forever, will be released on June 10th via Displaced Records; it was produced by some dude named Steve Albini.

New Guts Club Track + Album

gutsDidn’t Guts Club just release a record, you ask? Well, it was almost exactly a year ago, and Lindsey Baker is back at it with a brand new record, Shit Bug. She’ll likely be compared to a lot of other folk songstresses, but I appreciate the fact that she seems a bit more out of the ordinary, a bit rougher around the edges of things. I really think that this new effort will show us more of her unique songwriting, as well as growth; it’s going to be released by Moderate Fidelity Records on July 1st before she goes off to write another, I reckon. Lindsey will also be about town in Austin for SXSW, so if you’re here, keep an eye out.

Here’s That New SAVAK Song

SAVAK-BestOfLuck-cvr-3690x3690-768x768With former members of the Obits and Holy Fuck you might be led to think of this song in a certain genre, but what really got me was how SAVAKlook back at great British pub rock; you’ll definitely hear some of that influence lurking in this single. It’s an old sound, revamped to fit into the modern landscape, landing somewhere between Nada Surf and Ted Leo. Their debut album, Best of Luck in Future Endeavors, will be released on May 27th, with a handful of SXSW shows also thrown in the mix for those attending the fest.

Jangly Indiepop from Pale Spectres

paleIs it possible to get overexcited about a CD single? Well, I might have just gone overboard, but I love this brand new track form Pale Spectres, and in fact, wish they had more to offer. It’s got that angular churning guitar that us indiepop nerds fawn over; it’s got love as the subject matter (another of our favorites); it’s executed perfectly. I think people are just going to spend the rest of the day sitting around listening to this tune, at least I know I will. There’s another track that will come on April 8th, but for now, enjoy the hell out of this one.

Dark Pop from Stina Tester and Cinta Masters

stcmI’m always looking for something out of my normal listening habits, which is how I landed on this subtle bit of pop from Stina Tester and Cinta Masters. There’s something to the vocal delivery that reminds me an awful lot of Hether from Wax Idols, although the duo combine to harmonize in very specific moments of the song. I think they’ve done a great job allowing the song to be filled in with varying elements like the harmonium to flesh out the track as a whole. Their new effort, Mystery, will be released on April 1st via Listen Records, so listen below.

ATX Spotlight: Square Paradise

0006747488_10Austinites who pay attention to the local music scene will definitely recognize the name John Hetherington and his work with Austin band Knifight. Well maybe you don’t all know his name, but you’ve certainly heard of the band right? Right!? #supportlocalbands

Brand new act, Square Paradise, is John’s new project completely solo and away from his previously mentioned group. John tells me that he plans on releasing at least one new song a month “for the foreseeable future” as he records more and more music by himself in his home studio. Today you can find what is sure to be the first of many new singles below called “Ten Numbers”. This is pop music at its finest folks. I’m really looking forward to what else John has in store.

Sludgy Rocker from Ghost King

bonesOur friends over at Fleeting Youth Records, who we’re working with on the upcoming Basketball Shorts LP, will soon be releasing a new album from Ghost King. There’s a heavy hand on this track, but the central force still maintains some melody, fitting perfectly when it’s juxtaposed to the darker bass groove that works through the track. They recorded their new album, Bones, live, which definitely can be felt through this song; you can feel the live emotion coming through the speakers as the song slowly fades out. You can grab their album on March 25th.
