New Music from Family Video and Sparkle Water

splittapeOne of my favorite little labels is Lost Sound Tapes, as I’ve mentioned before, but I was getting worried as they’d been quiet the last few months. But, sweat no more, as the label is releasing a split tape between Family Video and Sparkle Water (both Canadian). The Sparkle Water side seems to hold a groovier, slightly louder sound, working between lo-fi and noise rock. Family Video (at least on the single) gets to play the innocent foil, bringing in a softer piece to balance out the feel of the tape. Can’t tell you which I love more, but you can make up your own mind and grab the tape on June 3rd.

Show Review: Florence + the Machine @ Austin City Limits (5/20/16)

florence-2On Friday night, the Moody Theater hosted one of the strongest and well-renowned acts in the music world on the ACLTV stage. Florence + the Machine brought their trademark flare for the dramatic and pumped out an epic and high-energy 12 song performance in the midst of their How Beautiful World Tour. The night prior the group hit an evening at the Circuit of the Americas Amphitheater to a much larger audience, but the element of subtlety and artistic restraint are nowhere to be found within the front woman’s agenda. When she gets on stage, it is laid out for all to see and bare witness like an emotional tsunami; unpredictable and unrelenting.

MaleGazePRPhoto1.165438Male Gaze is a San Francisco based band we’ve talked about on this here website several times in the past and I know Nathan and myself have grown to admire them over the last year or so. Another Great Track from Psychic Ills

psychicFor some reason I hadn’t realized until today how much I was looking forward to listening to the new album from Psychic Ills. While they still adhere to some of the psychedelic vibes, their new effort has this sprawling country vibe to it. The edges are slightly darkened, longing, settling the listener into a vibe of contemplation as the song unfolds…slide guitar and all. The group will release Inner Journey Out on June 3rd via Sacred Bones Records, and you can bet I’ll be in line waiting to pick it up.

More Music from Mourn

mournPromising young Spanish act Mourn seem to have their legal issues all figured out, so they’re going full force pushing ahead with the promotion of their new album, Ha Ha He, which is out in just a couple of weeks (June 3rd). Their latest track seems to have a dark post-punk feel to it, filled with discordant chords and a propulsive movement that pushes the track ahead. I continue to be impressed by the group’s youth, as if that matters, but their craftsmanship rivals that of their peers, who are often years older. Look for the new LP via Captured Tracks.

Album Premiere: Mythical Motors

Mythical Motors - Selections lo-resIt’s not a typical thing for us to premiere an entire album stream on our website, but when it’s full of quality like this Mythical Motors album, we’re down for whatever. So basically what we have here is a career spanning compilation of singles entitled Selections From the Psychics Museum which features 22 songs spanning the Chattanooga based bands entire career. With so many songs for you to dive into, it may seem overwhelming at first for those unacquainted with the band. I say to you, patience my friends, I’m sure everyone can find something to enjoy and take with them. After a few spins, “Full Breathing Costume”, is a favorite of mine. This one is for fans of bands like Guided by Voices, Times New Viking, or even a local band like The Midgetmen. Check it out below.

Fall Break Records will release a limited run of cassettes as a physical release on May 27th.

Airy Dream Pop from Richard Yot

richardLooking for that sense of longing today, longing to be into the weekend. Not quite in party mode, but more in a chilled mood, which is where this new track from Richard Yot gets into the mix. The vibes here are really calming, all the way up to Yot’s lofty vocals that are carefully draping themselves around the subdued musical elements. He’s working non-stop, like he once did as a video animator, to craft his sound, and the looks of this track have us in-store for some really great listens in the future…we’ll keep you posted on that as it comes our way.

Martha Should Be Your New Favorite Band

marthaOn the latest single from Martha, the group opens up really casually, just working the approach with vocals and guitars. That segment alone wins my fandom, based on the sweet vocal tones that are present…but some people need a bit more. You can feel it coming in this track, a faint buzz in the speakers up until the 1 minute mark, and then they blast off. They bring a crashing bit of pop rock fueled by gang vocals and distorted riffs that will ring in your ears, just as you try to memorize every second of the lyrics. This track appears on Blisters in the Pit of My Heart, which will be released in July via Dirtnap and Fortuna Pop.

Brand New Indiepop from The Salient Braves

salientIt’s been a few years since we’ve been able to bring you anything new from The Salient Braves, but I’m sitting here smiling, letting the band’s indiepop vibes wash over me this morning. They’re set to release their new EP, They Must Have Seen Me Coming next week, and they’ve tossed us a few tracks to help encourage your listening. The EP’s title track has that traditional indiepop sound, ringing guitars circling the song’s central melody. They take a more casual approach on the second track offered, settling into the groove of the song immediately while you wait for the warm of the melodies to sing up in the track’s mix. Look for the EP next Friday via Broken Down Records.
