Exciting New Music from Oh Well Goodbye

ohwellSometimes I get bored; it seems a lot of the music just blends together, repeating patterns and whatnot. But, that’s not the case with this new tune from Oh Well Goodbye. Opening with light guitar and a sort of spoken word repeated, it almost seems like a Scandinavian bit of post-punk. But, as the guitars evolve, the tones brighten and the vocal performance has a sense of longing that really pulls at your emotional earstrings. It’s part post punk, part great pop…and all worthy of your repeated listens. Cleanse your palate by turning this one up loud, and look for the Swoon 7″ very soon from Bleeding Gold Records.

ATX Spotlight: Strange Mother Releases EP

strangemomAustin’s Strange Mother has been on our radar since agreeing to be part of our Slack Capital Compilation, and we’ve now got another reason to celebrate the band, as they’ve just released the Young Buck EP. Honestly, there aren’t quite enough bands like this, claiming to call upon Selena, jazz and Marvin Gaye as their influences; it sounds like Zappa spun through modern textures with a hint of pop sensibility. None of the four songs spends too much time staying in one place, filling the tunes with varying textures. Songs take twists and turns, and with each move, your ears are pulled back listening for what’s next. Take a chance on something a little different, and stream this EP below.

Space Out To This New Suuns Video

In this day and age, it’s sort of a rarity that a music video will fully engage me for its complete duration. With this new video for “Instrument”from Canada’s Suuns, I find that this is not the case, as I’ve watched this a few times over. The electronic pulses and drones of Suuns music is perfectly accompanied by the black and white repetition of the simple video, and you will find yourself engrossed in the whole aesthetic of the clip. Sometimes, all you need is a brief reprieve into some other world, and this video for “Instrument” is sure to give you that. Also be sure to check out their albumHold/Stillwhich came out earlier this year on Secretly Canadian.

Keep It Local: New Video From Wildfires

I’ve been posting a lot about these folks from Wildfires, but when a band is on a roll, it’s pertinent that they get the attention they deserve. Wildfires have released a new video for a track off their upcoming EP, Aguas Frescas Pt. II and it’s a great way to fit a jam into your day. The video below, for “Undead Fun,” has fine green-screen technology, and…puppets, which will undoubtedly give you a laugh. Meanwhile, the song itself is a great shoe-gaze hit, with infectious jangly guitar riffs andgarage-rock vocals. Personally, I really love the way this song starts on the mild-side and then ramps up to close with a bit of a bite. Take a listen and thenget excited for that EP release, which is happening August 26th.

More Great Pop from Boys Forever

boysWe’ve covered a few of the great tunes from Patrick Doyle’s new project, Boys Forever, and here’s yet another one as we draw closer to the release of the self-title debut for Amour Foo. It’s got the expected bounce to keep it catchy, but the video below also fulfills in that it provides the sunny attitude true pop fans understand. You can be down on your luck, and somehow songs like this just make you feel better about the world. No need to keep going here…just listen to the track.

ATX Spotlight: Sailor Poon 7″ Release (+Show)

sailorpoonHopefully you caught wind of Sailor Poon on the Slack Capital Compilation we released earlier this year, or at least heard about the ladies continuous stomping of the Austin scene. Today the ladies continue their pummeling blend of rock n’ roll with the release of their new Yeast Pigeon 7″…a show at the Museum of Human Achievement kicks off tonight to celebrate with Yes Ma’am Brass Band, Popper Burns and DJ King Khan. I love how these ladies seem to be having a blast, all the time, whether recorded or live; you want to be part of it, you need to be part of it. So join in the fun and listen to their new 7″ below.

Rambling Folk Number from Ryley Walker

ryleySeems like Ryley Walker is writing music non-stop, whether with his friends, or, as in this case, as a solo artist. Not surprisingly, each release garners more and more praise, and while it probably hurts indie fans, this latest single is something that seems destined to move beyond the “I heard it first” crowd. The guitar work, as always, is intricate, but the construction of the rest of the track is what really makes the track…percussion rises where needed, but never oversteps its need. This number sounds like it deserves more than just running on the blogs, but maybe that’s just me. Look for his new effort, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, to hit stores on August 19th via Dead Oceans.

Love That New EZTV

eztvI loved the first EZTV release; it reeked of nostalgia, but clearly it was just step one in the band’s progression. Now the band is back with the announcement of their sophomore release, High In Place, and our first listen is definitely a joyous one. This tune definitely looks back on the sunnier side of classic rock, filled in with vocal accompaniment by everyone’s favorite Jenny Lewis. Seeing as their last effort was all over the place in a good way, it’ll be interesting to see where all the songs land on the new one. Look for the album on September 30th via Captured Tracks.

ATX Spotlight: Brand New Major Major Major

majormajormajorWe’ve long been fans of Major Major Major, one of Austin’s most exciting duos. We’ve heard rumors of a brand new album for some time, and we finally get our first taste of what’s to come in the future. It’s a wild blasting tune, emphatically crashing on the chorus of “all of my friends are fucking useless now that I got what I wanted.” Hopefully what the group wanted was to blast out one of our favorite songs this week, whilst still managing to capture the raw energy of the group’s live set. Look for PG-13 via Punctum Records come this October!

Give a Listen to Roy Moller

  1. royIt’s always easy to troll the Gums and the Forks to find the latest and greatest, but you’ve gotta peel back the shades in order to find gems like Roy Moller. Roy’s been banging about as “Scotland’s best-kept secret” for sometime, but with his latest release, I don’t think it’s fair that Scotland gets to keep him…these tunes are just too good. The Beautiful Music (home to Dot Dash) just released There’s aThousand Untold Stories, and it’s a collection of great songs in the vein of Loweor Bowie; it’s pop classicism, pure and simple. Stream these songs below and get hip to what we’ve all been missing.
