Digging This New Monomyth Tune

monomythI’ve been trying to identify some signature points to ascribe to Monomyth, and while I agree that the band has their own sound, you can also look at nods to the Wrens or Wilco for a hint at their sound. The chorus of this track is pretty enchanting, with a nice little upswing that grabs you, while the rest of the tune provides steadied folk-influenced bedroom pop. You’ll hear a bit of the current indie mood via the song’s noodling, though that incessant guitar ring in the background helps sets the band apart. Sounds to me like Happy Pop Family is going to find it’s way into a lot of people’s collection; it’s released on November 4th via Mint Records.

New to Me: Dag Ready Debut

dagWell, there goes the rest of my day! I just happened to stop by Bedroom Suck Records, looking to see what they’ve been up to, and lo and behold new song from Dag. Dammit if it’s not just a great little bit of a swinging pop jam. I mean, it definitely has an Aussie feel to it, but I like the added pieces in the background like the strings that work against the songs natural swinging stomp. The band have a debut album titled Benefits of Solitude coming out in February, but while we wait, can we not just celebrate the genius of this track?

Plus, you can visit the band and find some early versions of this track and some others I feel that will make their way onto the new LP.

Energetic Post-Punk from Affordable Hybrid

affordablehybridWhat? Like a Prius? Not sure what an Affordable Hybrid is, other than a rocking bunch of Swedes kicking out some pretty solid rock n’ roll hits. The group blasts off with a pounding rhythm section and an angular bit of guitar work. I love how the vocals hold just the slightest bit of pop sensibility; it’s like they’re just on the verge of swerving into an angst ridden moment. They bang out the song’s ending with a little discordant noise, just to make sure you know they mean business. This song features on the group’s new 7″, which is coming out on Flannel Gurl Records in late October.

Revisiting Deep Time – Band to Appear at Bill Ball 2 (10.8)

deepThis Saturday is Bill Ball 2…and while that’s important in and of itself, I think it’s high time someone devoted the proper attention to Deep Time‘s 2012 self-titled album on Hardly Art. I mean, the band is playing this weekend, and they’ll likely play a good amount of these songs there…which is all the more reason for you to attend.

I’ll throw in a little bit of my history with the album, as well as a track by track discussion of each tune! I’m making a declarative statement in saying this is the best album to come out of Austin in the last decade. Read more

Darkened Pop Wash from Chasms

chasmsI love the feeling that Chasms create with their music, thus why I used the term wash in our silly little line up there. The opening moments definitely hit you hard, coming into your being the way the best songs can. As the track unfolds, what really held my attention was the way the guitar comes into play, dancing carefully in the far off distance like some beautiful remnant of 80s greats. I think you’ll be really taken by this tune, which is promising for us all considering the group is set to release On the Legs of Love Purified on October 14th via Felte.

More From Plastic Flowers

plasticflowersThere are some bands you just gravitate towards, whether that’s nostalgia or the band’s sound, and Plastic Flowers happen to be a bit of both. They’ve got this slightly indiepop leaning sound…warm vocals, one step below danceable and twinkling guitars…that fits my nostalgia. But, their way of combining these sounds and never becoming tiresome or weary has made them incredibly endearing over the last few years. This great little number appears on the new 7″, which is being released by the increasingly reliable The Native Sound. Get into it below.

New Rocker From The Orwells

unnamed-3In case you didn’t hear it yesterday, The Orwells are back again with yet another single. They’ve put out the new song, “Buddy,” which you can take a listen to below and jam right along with the band. This group of rockers has a knack of making you fall in love with their music in a short amount of time, and this track is another test of that special skill– after all, the track is barely over a minute long. Nevertheless, it’s a right jam of a song, and it’s certainly got me tapping my toes and bouncing along. What do you think?

New Music from Lucidalabrador

lucidalabWhile hiding in the South East of London, Pedro Caetano Leite began forming his group of global players to back his project Lucidalabrador. You’ll hear bits of traditional down-tempo pop during the opening minute or two, but then there’s a left turn. It almost sounds as if the band’s employing a synthesize sitar with a high-pitched vocal soaring as the song settles. Ultimately, there’s a culminating of magic all over the place that emphatically wraps the tune up. If you’ve got a minute, you can grab the group’s Today is a Good Day for Friendship EP.

Enjoy the New Weyes Blood Video

We’re pushing forward to the release of the new Weyes Blood album, furthering my belief that the ladies are killing it this year. Here, we have the new single from Natalie Mering’s project, and not only does the video captivate an audience (as it should), but I like the structure of this track. It kind of opens with this warped, backwards looped electronic moment, opening the way for the guitar and Mering to move into the track. Then there’s this huge swell where to song takes a slightly different turn…only to settle back before the song comes to a close. Front Row Seat to Earth, the new record, should be something to behold; it’s released via Mexican Summer on October 21st.
