Quiet Ballad from Dom Robinson

A friend from overseas passed along this Dom Robinson tune to me yesterday, and I was struck by the song immediately. There’s a breath-y quality to the vocals, like a singing whisper coming through. Musically, there’s a forcefulness to the instrumentation, although it will seem fairly minimal to the first few run throughs of the track. All that in mind, listen carefully as there are some emphatic moments, particularly in the song’s latter half that really bring forth the song’s earnest beauty. This is our first listen to what Dom has planned for 2017, so stay tuned if you’re looking for more from this striking songwriter.

ATX Spotlight: New Single from The Hours Quiet

The Hours Quiet hit my Austin radar last year with their single “Memory,” but I already knew I’d enjoy it based upon my appreciation of singer Jason Morris’ voice. There’s an electronica undercurrent for the song…one that is far more upbeat than what we’ve heard up to this point. That being said, the groove allows for the perfect playscape for Morris voice to soar into the front of the mix; his best moment coming during the chorus. Those little guitar chords cutting in with accented percussion will definitely get your body moving throughout. Let’s hope we get to hear more from these guys throughout 2017.

Lovely New Song From Vansire

Nate Dog gave you guys a tune from Minnesota based dream pop group Vansire back in January and I’m pleased today to be bringing another one of their songs. This one is called “Driftless” and I think you’ll find that the song title is a perfect descriptor of the tune. It sort of meanders a little bit as you drift off into the delight of the jangly pop sounds. I dig it.

How’d I Miss This UV TV Tune

Not sure where my brain was, or where I was, but I somehow missed this killer UV TV tune the other day when it popped up. It’s the sort of noise infused poppy rocker that I adore, though I will admit it runs just a touch short. The drum work punishes and pushes your ears while the buzzing guitars begin to swell inside your mind. All of a sudden Rose Vastola enters the picture and you’re hooked into the song’s pop sensibility; you can’t ignore a combo like this. We heard the band long ago on a great Emotional Response 7″, so can’t wait to hear what their debut LP has to offer when it’s released by Deranged Records on March 10th.

The Return of Spiral Stairs

Spiral Stairs fanboy here, but I don’t think that really applies to this new song from Scott Kannberg, as this track doesn’t really seem to fall into his immediate canon (Pavement, PSoI). That being said, there’s something progressive here, moving into a more traditional songwriting mode; it’s almost as if he’s opted to channel Bowie here and just bring out this darkly brilliant bit of pop (as if we ever doubted him). It’s a touch bit different than what I expected (though there were hints on some of his Matador work), but I think his writing abilities still shine through, building anticipation for Doris and the Daggers, released by Dominoon March 24th.

Obligatory Temples Post on New Song

I’m currently rocking four jobs, so forgive me if I’m not always minutes behind the tunes…I still had to post this new Temples track. For me, there’s something new going on in their sound; they’re no longer just touching on psychedelic rehash. Instead, they seem to be favoring a huge swath of pop sensibility…recalling the best moments of Flaming Lips (been listening to the Lips a lot lately). The lyrics are slightly coated, yet it’s impossible to hear the melodies bursting forth from beneath the surface of these tracks. Their new album Volcano will be out on February 3rd via Fat Possum, and if it sounds at all like this song, it’s going to be a huge success.

Hear Remastered Track from The Stray Trolleys

There’s a few of us around this neck of the woods that are way into Cleaners from Venus, so the fact that Martin Newell’s earlier project, The Stray Trolleys is getting the reissue format from Captured Tracks. I don’t really know how to pigeonhole the work, but in an attempt to try and spin it in a modern tone, just imagine that you got the Exploding Hearts together (RIP) and asked them to remove their punk ethos; you’d have just great pop music you could play over and over. The reissue of Barricades & Angels comes on January 20th.

New Sleaford Mods Video

A lot of us are spending are time lately worrying about how much we hate Donald Trump, but let’s not forget that our UK brethren have their own issues…not too far unlike our own. Sleaford Mods, of course, will always take aim at the monarchy…always take aim at those exploiting others. This video accompanies their latest single, kicking it with this bubbling bass line, while the rest of the song seems revolves around a synthetic beat…it’s like LCD Soundsytem if they had a political bent and were still relevant. You’ll find this song on the group’s new LP, English Tapas, hitting on March 3rd.

Show Spotlight: TV Girl + Big Bill @ Mohawk (1.11)

News in the music world seems unreasonably slow this week, so why not spotlight a show with one of our favorite artists, Big Bill, opening up with famed LA act TV Girl. They’re all there to celebrate the re-release of TV Girl’s classic, French Exit, which is now back in print. It’s a mash of hip hop beats, electronica, lo fi bedroom recordings…all spun tightly with a pop-centric attitude in mind. Big Bill will likely include a bunch of songs from their new LP they’re quietly working on…as well as our favorites. Oh, and if you were looking for cool points, Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls fame will also be DJing between sets. Show starts at 8 with Poppet opening.

Hear Two New Tracks on New Mozes and the Firstborn EP

I’ve always been a fan of Mozes and the Firstborn; I found their debut filled with these really great hooks…and just enough rock to keep me interested. Late last year they had a single with Marianne/What Am I Worth, both good rockers…but now I finally get to hear the other tracks, which I have yet to see anywhere else. These tunes illustrate the softer side of the band, almost ballads. I just keep playing them, however, so that means they have to be good, right? I’ll let you decide, but go grab the Marianne EP andenjoy a few new hits!
