ATX Show Spotlight: Growl and Shivery Shakes at Hotel Vegas

TONIGHT! If you’re in Austin and you like pop music, you need to come out to Hotel Vegas to catch this rad little pop show, featuring new ATH Records band, and old fave, Growl…plus OG labelmates Shivery Shakes. Growl’s got a new album coming in April (the 7th to be exact), so you can hear a lot of their new stuff to get your anticipation up. Plus, Shivery Shakes are working on a new record, which means you get to hear the band try out new tunes tonight! They’ll be joined by Dryspell and Deep State, making it an all around night of hits! Show starts at 10 over at the hotel, so be there or be square.

Spiraling Rock From Imaginary People

Imaginary People are a five piece out of New York and they’ve got a song for you about ‘an incompetent politician,’ which honestly, seems to be a little too prevalent in our lives atthe moment. However, when I took a listen to “Mr. Hesitance,” I couldn’t help but dig the track– the vocals immediately strike you with their raw vibrato, but then the drums really kick in and you’re hooked.By the end of the song, the instruments take over and you get some slick solos to close out the tune. It’s a great track that reminds me a bit of The Twilight Sad, but slightly less heavy. Take a listen and get ready for the band’s upcoming sophomore LP,October Alice, which will be out April 28th.

Deep Throat Choir Release New Music

As a kid that was attached toOmaha music scene in the early 00s, Tilly and the Wall was one of those bands that turned me onto to a broader spectrum of pop music. Why does that matter with Deep Throat Choir? Well, I think the band’s approach to songwriting is similar, layering various textures on top of each other, particularly in the way the vocals swirl and overlap on their latest single. You just can’t turn yourself away from the innocent playfulness, and you find yourself coming back to press play over and over. Bella Union will be releasing the band’s album Be Ok on February 17th, and I think it’s going to be a special listen that lasts throughout the year.

More Pop Hits from Dag

I don’t know how the Aussie folks do it, but Dag is just another group in the long line of hitmakers coming across the sea. This particular tune seems to hit some discordant notes, only forcing you to focus more closely on the song’s construction…well-played. The casual attitude is perfect for the verses, wearing a heavy male vocal; it’s joined by a female counterpart during the choruses, which kicks up the endearing factor ten fold. This tune appears on the band’s new LP, Benefits of Solitude, and it should only be a matter of time before the rest of the States start clamoring for these guys; look for the LP on February 24th via Bedroom Suck Records.

Playful Pop from Baby Guru

The Athens (Greece) pop scene seems to be one of the most overlooked settings for musical productivity, so today I’m bringing you this Baby Guru tune in hopes you’ll catch on to the groovy single they’ve just released. The song opens up with tiny chords stepping on top of one another, as Prins Obi carefully croons through your speakers. You can feel the tension building in the way his voice pushes forward, then the guitars step up a note to allow for the joyousness that spins through your ears during the chorus; it always makes me want to throw my hands in the air and jump in circles. Their new album IV will be out on April 7th via Inner Ear.

New Music from Business of Dreams

In my monthly Corey Cunningham update, today we have a synth driven pop hit from his Business of Dreams project. Immediately your ears are hit with bouncing rhythms, quite playful from the get-go. Vocally, Corey dreamily drapes his voice atop those beats, allowing juxtaposed feelings to mesh perfectly in your speakers. Listen closely at the 1.20 minute mark, where a nice little guitar dances around in the chorus, furthering the delight for listeners. This song will appear on the debut Business of Dreams LP, which comes via Cunningham’s label, Parked in Hell, on February 2nd. Listen now and thank me later.

Brand New Indie Rock from Faze Wave

When the vocals from this great new Faze Wave track came through the speakers, I was transported back to the early days of Local Natives, though these guys seem to have a bit more sheen in their tastes. A shiny guitar chord echoes in the distance, letting the voice rise, fall and control the song’s tempo. But, like great indie rock hits, the chorus really drives the point home for listeners, bringing the harmony in and out of the front of the mix. You can hear the track on the band’s latest album, Melt, which will help fill in the pop gaps in your life.

Another Gem from The Paperhead

While the Paperhead fell early into the psychedelic charms with their early releases, it has become increasingly clear that the band have focused on broadening their sound. Their latest single illustrates such, bringing in a pastoral folk appeal that’s been perfected by so few. You’ll hear a distant guitar sliding, texturing the track…almost making it a wonderful Western ballad you’d want to hear as the sun falls beneath the horizon. This track will show up on the band’s forthcoming LP, Chew, which is being released by the uber-reliable Trouble in Mind Records on February 17th. A broader sound should allow for broader appeal, btu regardless, there’s some brilliant stuff in this album.

Sweeping Rock from A Festival A Parade

I’m a huge fan of indie rock that takes on broad brush strokes, rises and falls, yet still maintains pop sensibility. This new track from A Festival, A Parade does just that, building a huge ground swell of noise to meet just in time with the lyrics rolling out. I love how the song is able to settle calmly before the band chimes back in with their squall of guitars and crashing percussion. The rolling drum work in the middle of the track is a nice touch too, only increasing the tension that holds this track together. No word on a full length, but this song will do for now.

This New Feelies Tune Rules

This year is going to rule for the old guards of rock n’ roll…new JaMC, new Bats, new Wire and, of course, a new record from the Feelies. I think the cascading riff that opens this song really will grab modern listeners that might not be too familiar with the band’s work, just before they settle into their hook-laden groove. That guitar sound is so familiar that I think I’ll hear it haunt me for the rest of my life; I don’t want to even think of how many bands owe these guys a debt of musical gratitude. In Between is the title of the new LP, and it’s being released by Bar None on February 24th.
