Emo Punk From Two Inch Astronaut

Man Maryland based Two Inch Astronaut make me feel really nostalgic when I listen to their music. Bands like Juliana Theory or Hot Rod Circuit immediately come to mind. If the band knew me, they would consider that a huge compliment. For a taste of this style, check out the band’s latest single called “Can You Please Not Help”.

New album, Can You Please Not Help, is out June 2nd on Exploding in Sound Records.

New Music from 808s and Greatest Hits

You’d expect with our modern awareness of the 808s that we’d get some over-worked drum loops from a project like 808s and Greatest Hits, but instead Skube Burnell is just going to bring you seductive pop songs. He’s going to work around mellow melodies and some angular guitar stabs, slowly sucking you into his vision of pop music. His subject matter here seems to approach the concept of packing your bags and heading out on a new adventure, something I hope most people can appreciate in their lives. Give in to these vibes, and you won’t look back. I’ll keep you posted on more news as it comes my way.

Tunabunny Keep Kicking Out Jams

Clearly we’re on a Tunabunny kick, anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new album PCP Presents Alice in Wonderland Jr. This track continues to display the band’s diversity on this ambitious double LP from HHBTM, offering a casual croon over a minimal rock n’ roll vibe. But, just before the track hits the two minute mark, the vocals are stretched and the drums start pounding quicker, begging you to keep pace as the angular guitars lightly jump in and out of the closing moments. Look for a surprise hit for your year end list on June 23rd.

Fresh Tunes from Greg Ashley

There are some musicians that inevitably supercede all others, and when new music arrives you stream it, buy it, play it over and over. Such is my interaction with Greg Ashley, who has just announced the release of a new album. Our first listen has him working out some broader musical territory; he opens with some careful guitar picking and soft vocals, then moving into an almost lounge exploration of balladry. This would be enough to grab me, but he continues his expansion with a heavy handed eruption that wraps up the tune. You know you’ll find me playing his new Pictures of Saint Paul Street quite frequently when it’s released by Trouble in Mind on June 30th.

More From Cool American

Portland based group Cool American has certainly caught the ears of the ATH staff over the last couple of months. Last month Nate dog shared single “Great at Parties” and today I’m excited to share this new single entitled “Maui’s”. I love how the song fools you into thinking it’s going to be this slow and mellow jam, but then slaps you in the face to power into a straight rock n roll tune. Well done gentlemen.

New album Infinite Hiatus is out June 2nd on Good Cheer Records.

Jangly Indiepop from The Arctic Flow

Wake up folks! It’s Friday morning, and you need to get the day started. The only way I can think to get you in the mood for a solid day is by tossing out this new Arctic Flow tune to give you some pep in the step. The guitars dance their way from the start, setting the tone for a warm wash of vocals to glide atop the mix. As the song progresses you can hear some depth provided by the textured guitars shimmering in the far off distance. This is indiepop at its best, so keep an eye out for Umbrella…soon to be released by Shiny Happy Recs.

Another New Rat Fancy Hit

Guitars twinkle in the distance as the kick drum slowly marks the band’s entry. Volume gets pushed up, and then come those dreamy vocals from Diana. There’s a little synth thrown in this round, just building on the layered infectious quality Rat Fancy brings. This is just another reason you should be excited to hear the group’s new effort; I’m pretty sure they didn’t write a bad song to put on Suck a Lemon. You can grab the new recordings from HHBTM on May 26th…so you have a week to indulge in the sugary sweetness that is this latest single.

Night Drive News

We don’t shy away from the fact that the ATH loves Night Drive. “Rise And Fall” is on my JamOTY list. The new record is finally final with a June 16th release date. The s/t debut rehashes a few hits we are familiar with while adding new tracks that have been on the periphery of recent live sets. New song below!

Speaking of live sets, the big release party is also officially official. Details available on the bookface, but the short and sweet is 6/16, Cheer Up, Orthy, Keeper, Single Lash and Lambda for $5. In.

New Music from The Hayman Kupa Band

Darren Hayman and Emma Kupa have frequented my playing rotation throughout the last several years, sometimes together, but mostly separate. Fortunately for us all, they’ve been keeping their unique songwriting process going, and now have their self-titled album ready for our ears. Our first tease is this delightful new tune, illustrating how two great songwriters can up the ante by combining their powers together; I dig the way they play back and forth with varying lines. The song, aside from the vocals, has this relaxed pop feel to it; the guitar sound is great, particularly with that semi-Western chord sliding away behind “no more bombs.” Look for their finished album from Fika Recordings on July 21st.

More from Fishboy

This is the second single from Denton’s Fishboy, and I want you to imagine that John Darnielle traded in his folk stylings for heavy riffs and pop sensibilities. They lyricism begs you pay attention to every line, every syllable; it’s also powered by a distinctive voice. But, there’s huge energy in the band’s songs, making it perfect for just about any time you need a little pick me up. I don’t know how much better this band can get, but when I’ll report back to you when I spend some time with their new album Art Guards…hitting your stereo with a kick this week!
