Guitar Pop from Birdskulls

You’re going to immediately recognize the vibe in this brand new Birdskulls song; it’s everything you love from bands like Dinosaur Jr, Weezer and Teenage Fanclub…and its filled with the hooks too! I love the vibe here, both youthful and nostalgic…perfect for air musicianship as you bounce around your bedroom. If this is something you dig, I suggest you keeping your eyes on the folks over at Art Is Hard Records, who will be releasing the band’s new EP later this Autumn.

Fresh Video from Michael Beach

Australia’s Michael Beach was living in Oakland for a bit, and he was fortunate to lay down his next record with members of Comets on Fire and Meercaz. Today he’s dropped the animated video for his ode to friendship, and its great in two ways: 1) you get to listen to the really killer song 2) the video rules, making me feel like this sort of animation is under-utilized. This track has a great energy, and reminds me of our local friends A. Sinclair in its straightforward approach to good rock n’ roll. Michael will release Gravity/Repulsion, his next LP, this coming September!

Epic New Single From Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs

Man Toronto based outfit Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs have just killed it with this new single “Ragnarok”. When discussing the new generation of power pop music, songs like this need to be mentioned before any other. If for some reason that style of music isn’t for you, well move on and let the rest of chant along and enjoy ourselves. Epic. Fun. Carry on.

Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs will release a self-titled LP on July 28th via Burger Records.

Never a Bad Day for a Fresh and Onlys Tune

While my fandom for Fresh and Onlys is pretty well-known by this point, I think their new LP could definitely turn more heads. On their latest single, you’ll hear a clarity that’s been building since the band’s earliest days. Still, they bring in these hook-laden riffs/vocals during the chorus…possibly offering the most pop moment of the band’s lengthy career. Honestly, it sounds like they removed the distortion from aTerry Malts record, and slowed things down…which in my mind is pretty fucking cool. Look for Wolf Lie Down to hit stores on August 25th via Sinderlyn.

NITE Want You to Dance Like No One is Watching

NITE is recently added favorite to the ATH IT Department. Their new record, Reborn, is available for preorder at that link kicking off the post and is landing in couple weeks via Cleopatra Records. In advance, they have released a video for the song “Dreamer”.

The song sounds like Tears for Fears tour bus collided head-on with Little Boots backing synths and a Juan MacLean groove. I dig it, looking forward to the new record. Twins, Myles and Kyle Mendez, are pushing the retro-future thing hard right now. They have an upcoming show with Night Drive and Blackbird Blackbird in Dallas, you should go if you are in the metroplex.

Love Me Some Earth Girl Helen Brown

After the Sandwitches calling it a day, Earth Girl Helen Brown has been hard at work with new tunes, helping friends and establishing the E.G.H.B.C.P.F.I.B to promote peace and non-violence. Today I’m bringing you this sparkling bit of pop, dripping with those sunny California guitar lines while the vocals take on a sultry croon. Her latest Mars EP will be released by Empty Cellar Records on July 21st, and pretty much every great musician in the San Fran area is rumored to spend time playing on it. The hype is good, but this song’s even better.

Check Out Body Origami

Body Origami is a fairly new band from Nashville, TN who I suggest you check out on this fine hump day. The band just sent over this new song called “Sun Pry” which shows tons of creativity and a unique take on the indie shoegaze movement. I’m reminded of some the slower, dancier songs of Broncho or even locals She Sir. It definitely makes me want to sway and bounce along to the tightness of the song.

Body Origami will drop Bright and Only Mine on September 22nd via Broken Circles.

Pop Hit from DieAlps

I love a good pop tune, and this one from DieAlps should definitely whet your whistle today. There are slight notes of Death Cab in the song’s construction, though these guys bring a touch more energy. The keyboard working hard in the distance really gives the song and extra hook as the guitars work to infuse the track with pace. It’s a great glimpse at a band just out there rocking solid pop rock tunes, and we hear that there will be much more from the band in August when they release their new full-length, Our City, via New Granada.

ACL 2017: Lineup By Day

…and single day tickets are going on sale Friday.

Here is a link to the ACL website for your internet reading.

The lineup by day is the normal precursor to single day tickets. Weekend one only, Cut Copy will be on Saturday. What has two thumbs and has a wife that will be at ACL on Saturday of Weekend One? This guy.

It seems that they have a fairly well-balanced spread of ATH faves in he mid-tier headliner levels. The XX, Bonobo, Crystal Castles and Hamilton Leithauser are on Friday. Spoon, aforementioned Cut Copy (WE1), Angel Olsen, Car Seat Headrest, Ought are on Saturday. Gorillaz, Run The Jewels, Portugal Guy and First Aid Kit will ease you back into the work week.

Katelyn Aurelia Smith is Back At It

Western Vinyl is so hot right now; they’ve got new Balmorhea, Caroline Says reissue and now a new Katelyn Aurelia Smith announcement! I’ve always really appreciated Smith’s work, particularly her care with the compositions that surround her voice. Here, we see her drifting into that realm where the Knife left us, beauty and hints of darkness intertwined. This composition is pretty sparse, but I like that it leaves plenty of room for folks to get lost as the song builds towards the end. Look for the Kid on October 6th!
