Enjoy New Music from Yndi Halda

Yndi Halda left us with the beautiful Under Summer in 2016, but it seems the story of that album was far from complete. The band left one stone unturned, an incomplete piece that was vital to the entirety of the album, though wasn’t able to fit. Now we’re able to hear the tune as the group ready A Sun-Coloured Shaker, their new EP…a companion piece of sorts. This track is all about the group’s vocal performance, draping harmonies on top of one another, as strings and careful musical accents dance their way through the tune; I find the string touches quite moving throughout. The new EP will be handled by Big Scary Monsters and Burnt Toast Vinyl, releasing on February 16th.

Photos: Blushing Release Party @ Cheer Up (1/27)

Blushing‘s latest EP, WEAK, was released to the public last Friday and with it, we had an excuse to take over a venue and feature some favorite bands to celebrate. Cheer Up Charlies played host via The Nothing Song who added Ringo Deathstarr, Single Lash and All In The Golden Afternoon to fill the before and after spots.

I focused on spending time with friends, so the gallery is very Blushing-centric, but it was the EP’s brithday party.

Premiere Low Valley Hearts Release Garden of Something

On February 16th, Low Valley Hearts will release their new album Piece of Your Mind, an album seemingly set to invade your psyche, subversively implanting the band’s music in your brain for extended periods of time. Today, we have the band’s hypnotic new single, “Garden of Something,” offering the band’s futuristic pop music, swelling from start to finish with a huge wash of dreamy melody curated by a very minimal musical approach. I love how the synth waves seem to wrap the guitar and harmonious gang vocals in a blanket of spaced-out atmospheric bliss. Then again, maybe this song is just about the joy of gardening and flowers…you be the judge.

New Video From In Tall Buildings

Erik Hall and his project known as In Tall Buildings sure seem to receive a lot of positive praise over here on ATH. We’ve always been fans of the tunes over the years so one can imagine the excitement when I heard that new music was finally on the way. This track, “Beginning to Fade”, with accompanying video directed by Natalie Bergman, features a truly peaceful and airy take on songwriting. After a few listens, you can start feeling yourself melt into the melody and the groove of the song.

In Tall Buildings will release Akinetic on March 2nd via Western Vinyl.

Stream Opium from Cats of Transnistria

Cats of Transnistria have graced the ATH pages several times in the past few months, as we anxiously awaited the release of the group’s new effort, Opium. Luckily, we’re fortunate enough to share the stream of the album before it’s release this Friday via Soliti Music. But, one must be forewarned, as you’re likely to find yourself lost in the folds of this wondrous creation. The group has always had this haunting depth…a sort of out-of-body craftsmanship that seductively brings you under its spell; you’ll want to fully immerse yourself in this listen. Take a track like “Trees,” which is a 7 minute opus; the band exhibit a great deal of patience, barely making a sound before the 3 minute mark. They’re stretching the boundaries of pop music, carefully plotting each note and change of tone…aided on this effort by the presence of violinist Sanna Komi. While I find the entirety of the record stunning, I’ve found “Feeding” to be my favorite; the discordant opening crested perfectly into an angelic vocal appearance from Henna Emilia. Lose yourself in this listen, and look for the album on Friday.

Ultimate Painting Announce New Album

Ever since Ultimate Painting first came onto our radar, we’ve pretty much wholeheartedly supported the band and their music endeavors. Today comes news that the group have a brand new LP ready for the world, along with a brand new single. Honestly, this might be one of my favorite tracks from the band to date, especially as they take the casual pop stylings and then slow them down even just at the 2:15 mark on the number, letting the song drift off into the world. Ever charming, UP will drop on April 6th via Bella Union. You’ve been warned.

Dig on This New Tune from Mint Field

It’s a strange place where the propulsive grooves of club beats crash into the dreamier zones of psychedelia; this is the precise place where you’ll find Mint Field. They manage to blend minimalist hints of electronica inside these swelling guitar lines that meander into the ether. Musically, it’s fascinating in and of itself, but when placed inside the video below listeners are sure to be completely lifted out of their body as they journey outside of their body. The duo have a slew of dates coming up, including SXSW…all supporting their new album Pasar de las Luces, which is being released by Innovative Leisure on February 23rd.

Stream New Sour EP from Sushi Backpack

Two things this Sour EPfrom Sushi Backpack had going for it from the get-go: it’s being released by February Records; it references Tullycraft. On that alone, I feel like it’s worthy of a post over here, but three runs through the EP, and I’ve found it lives up to every bit of my expectations. “Bucky” is a charming number waiting for you at the near the end, employing playful male/female dueling vocals. The jangling opening of “Apokalypse” immediately sets you on your way for a listen that involves a lot of smiling. A lot of great releases today, so here’s an extra one that might not be on your radar as of yet.

Jamming This Durand Jones

A friend, knowing my affinity for old school soul and R&B, sent me this new Durand Jones tune from his forthcoming self-titled LP with his band the Indications. It’ll only take a few seconds for you to realize the pipes on Jones mean business; think Leon Bridges but with more range. But, while the voice is a powerful instrument, the musicianship has to be present in order to really knock it out of the park; you won’t need to look much further than the first few minutes to see how solid the rhythm section is with these guys. Durand Jones & the Indications will be released by Dead Oceans/Colemine Records on March 16th, with pre-orders offering up a bonus 7″.

Celebrate the Release of Blushing’s Weak EP @ Cheer Ups (1/27)

We’re really really excited to kick of the label side of ATH with our first release of 2018: Blushing‘s Weak EP. It’s a heavy dose of dreamgaze gems, all organized into a handy 12″ record. Several tracks have already garnered raves from the likes of DKFM Radio to the esteemed Gold Flake Paint, so clearly they’ve got something you need. Plus, if you’re in the Austin area, you can catch the band live at their release show at Cheer Up Charlies on Saturday night. It’s a pretty solid bill, with Ringo Deathstarr and Single Lash among bands filling the evening out. Just because we love you, we’re streaming the album below for you, in advance of its Friday release. You can grab the vinyl version HERE or the tape HERE.
