Good Morning Drop Two New Singles

Just a few weeks ago we were alerted to the news that Aussie act Good Morning would finally be releasing a new full-length via Bedroom Suck Records. And now, we’ve got two new tracks to sit back and enjoy this morning, reveling in the duo’s songwriting. “Just a Man” is slightly playful, though it draws in some folk traditions, particularly in the way the vocals are presented. “For a Little While” is more of a slow burner, working over electronic beats and piano to craft a powerful ballad. If you’re unfamiliar with the band, give these a listen, as I’m sure you won’t be let down. Prize//Reward will drop on may 11th.

New Ari Roar Jam

Dallas’ Ari Roar is hitting the spot this morning. He crafts these hook infected pop songs that carry a bit of nostalgia, but hold one foot in the present. You’d think, the way this track kicks off that the guitar work might be the star, but once you hear Ari’s voice spinning those light melodies on almost every note, you’ll be intoxicated. There’s something familiar in his work, which I think will have many fans feeling like they’ve been listening to Ari for years. Let’s start that trend by grabbing Calm Down on May 25th via Bella Union.

Another Tune from High Sunn

Clearly, I’m really loving what I’m hearing from Justin Cheromiah and his High Sunn project. This round he does a great job of balancing the quiet/loud dynamic; you can hear the tension building in the sound as cymbals quietly crash behind Justin’s voice in the verses, before their brief choral explosion. The song goes back and forth between the two, with the noisier element winning out in the song’s latter half. This youngster seems destined to release a great record, and we’ll all know for sure when Missed Connections drops on May 4th via PNKSLM.

Stream Do Xao from The New Tigers

We’re now several years into our fandom of Finland’s The New Tigers, and I can say that Do Xao might contain some of the best song’s the group has written to date. According to the band, this batch of songs came out of the band’s continued evolution and willingness to try any sound that they fit; they never try to stretch themselves into any particular genre. That being said, I think you’ll find that futuristic pop is a decent pigeonhole, in so far as this is what I want my pop music to sound like. They employ these dreamy elements throughout the entire LP, but there’s a very clean guitar sound that plays a prominent role as well, so you find the band balancing their influences and tastes to craft something wholly their own. I thought my favorite song was “Earth Dog,” but in the end, or today, I’m settling on “Nothing But Draining,” in case you need a starting point. Regardless, if you’re willing to try something new, you’ll be rewarded if you sit back and play the entirety of this LP; it drops Friday via Soliti Music.

Another Lawn Tune

Once you put away the Dylan reference in this new Lawn single, it reveals an emphatic punch of a tune. Musically, it’s pretty standard guitar and drums, but I think the lyrical play, and the delivery of said lyrics, leaves you with a good impression of the group. Those lyrics are delivered in a very matter of fact manner, akin to spoken word, though they take on a slight howl for the work in the chorus. Just another example of competent songwriting that will appear on the group’s debut LP, which drops May 11th via Forged Artifacts.

The Black Watch Return with New EP

Had the music business gone differently, I feel that we’d all be treasuring the work of John Andrew Fredrick and the Black Watch. As it is, he quietly goes about writing great song after great song; he’s about 17 LPs in and still writing powerful songs. This tune flirts with the realm of jangling pop, though there feels as if heavier tones are lurking in the guitars; the pop sensibility comes via the lines “he helped you make a paper boat/one for you/one for him.” Consider me charmed, and even more so when the song ups the volume on that complimentary guitar line. This is one of my favorite bands of the last few years, and it should definitely be yours too. Paper Boats EP drops on April 26th.

Introducing: Evil Bone

Evil Bone have been haunting music blogs and twitter accounts for months; we finally get a chance to hear what the band is all about…and it’s pretty great. The sound is rather definitely one of pop ilk, but the presentation is where the band is able to differentiate itself. The vocals have an effect on the, coming off like wisps of air floating atop the dense percussive groove that’s established. This is the sort of place where listeners will get lost, entranced by the craftsmanship. No word on a proper release, but a worthy groove for you all to enjoy on a Friday.

Loving This New Little Junior Track

If you didn’t check out the site this week, I’ve been big on posting upbeat, high energy tracks to break out of my normal sad bastard vibe. Continuing my new vibe is Toronto based outfit Little Junior with their new song “Buzz Off”. Seriously, this track is just about as perfect you can get in the pop/punk genre while keeping a slight bit of edge to the sound. It’s like if Weezer still wrote good songs!

Little Junior will release new LP Hi on May 11th via Grand Jury Music.

New Hit from Pema

It’s Friday folks. It’s early and you needed to pick it up. Well, I figured you could listen to this new hit from our friend Alex, who currently is working under her Pema moniker (she’s also in Austin group Alex Napping). There’s this pulse that brings the song in, with extemporaneous beeps and bloops layered in to maximize the hook factor. I love the way Alex plays with the syllables in her vocal delivery in the song’s late middle, before putting in a final stomp to groove you to the end. Pema will release Bad Habits on May 4th via Topshelf Records.
