Gruff Rhys Is Back Again

Thought not mentioned much by us over the last several years, Gruff Rhys is one prolific dude who pumps out all kinds of art via music, film and even literature. Assuming all of you, or most of you, know the guy a bit, you won’t be surprised to find this new track “Frontier Man” is pretty typical of the style we know and love from Gruff. It is a bit more americana/folk than some of his previous efforts but that lyrical playfulness and extreme baritone voice are both still present. Ya dig.

Gruff Rhys will release new album Babelsberg on June 8th via Rough Trade Records.

New Jam from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

It’s strange how a region in the world can seem to craft a sound that’s forever associated with the area, like say New Zealand and Flying Nun. As of late, Melbourne’s been churning out casually infectious guitar pop ditties like nobody’s business…and I obviously put Ocean Party high upon the list of purveyors of that sound. But, just behind them, in a slightly less prolific manner is Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever, who’ve just announced the release of their debut LP for Sub Pop. This song is definitely going to get stuck in your head, especially that damn chorus. Admittedly, I’m a sucker for this region and this sound, so of course I’ll be picking up Hope Downs when its released on June 15th.

New Honey Radar Tune

Honey Radar first bounced onto our radar when the Philly act released their second LP via What’s Your Rupture. Today, they’ve announced a brand new EP is on the way via Chunklet Industries; it’s titled Psychic Cruise. Immediately you’re going to toss out that psychedelic vibe, but the song’s brevity and casual demeanor make it a far cry from that far out land. Sure, I can hear some of the guitars giving you the impression, but just the smooth delivery of the lyrics gives the song a whole lot more polish and assuredness. Jamming can be cool, but it’s only as cool as the song will take it…and this tune takes it pretty far in under a minute and a half; look for the EP on April 20th.

Carpark Records Reissue The Beths

Why not keep things in the Oceanic region for the day. Today we get news that Carpark Records will be reissuing The BethsWarm Blood EP. It was originally released back in 2016, but sometimes it takes awhile for great bands to make themselves known overseas. It’s a great release, especially considering that it takes on a more pop college rock vibe, as opposed to the jangling sound most commonly known for the region. Reissue old issue, whatever, these are 5 songs to make your day a little better. Here’s to hoping that this reissue means a brand new LP is in the works around the corner.

New Music from Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton

Lachlan Denton is one of the multi-talented (and hyper involved) members of the Ocean Party, but today we bring you a song he’s worked on with his good friend Emma Russack (who has quite a pedigree of her own). Emma takes the vocal focus on this track, though Lachlan does enter during the chorus with a warm backing line. Musically, the track’s a subdued number, sublime guitar strumming with a piano line that works atop a gentle percussive element. It’s a relaxed vibe, discussing the pros/cons of singledom versus life in a relationship, but for those just hearing the two for the first time, you’ll walk away warmed by the talent presented before you. Look for the two to drop a full-length later on in the year.

Wedding Announce New 7 Inch

Don’t be scared off by the distortion ringing out when you press play; it only takes a matter of moments for Wedding to turn on the pop charm. Quick drum punctuation allows for the group to enter the scene with their slightly smoky group vocal delivery; it sort of reminds me of a weird place where Woods were happily popping off to Supergrass (then again I’ve just been jamming a whole lot of Supergrass lately). In under two minutes you cruise through the track, with just enough grit to keep you interested; the band have just announced they’ll be releasing a new flexidisc 7″ via Art Is Hard Records and their Eyes & Ears zine.

Have A Nice Weekend

Hey.

So there are some things going on tonight. I’ll be in nostalgia land with OMD at Emos. It is sold out. They are bringing along GGOOLLDD to open. Should be a pleasant evening with the wife. I was telling a co-worker that the last time I saw OMD, you realize that there are bands still touring to make pay for their landscaping and others that still really love their songs. OMD is the latter and it doesn’t hurt that the new stuff is solid, too. There is also a fellow photographer’s belated birthday party at Cheer Up. Super lineup.

Little Boots has a new EP out. You can listen to a few tracks over at Soundcloud and on youtube. I added “Picture” to my Soundcloud bucket. The Bucket is my catch all, a little under four hours, full of my faves from ATH and some other randoms. Try it out, below.

Punky Ditty from Blues Lawyer

Can’t say that we know too much about Blues Lawyer, though we know the band is about set to release their debut Guess Work via the trustworthy label, Emotional Response. We do know that Dick Stusso is involved, as well as a few other members from the San Francisco scene. This track comes in with angular chords, matter of fact vocal delivery, with a slight female accompaniment; it’s like Ought just decided to write straightforward hits with a heavier dosage of pop sensibility. It ends up sounding sort of old school, and that, in and of itself is rather refreshing; the album drops April 20th.

New Music from Beach Skulls

Beach Skulls have been on my radar since they dropped Slow Grind (2016), but they’ll soon be making it on everyone’s radar, as they’ve just inked a deal with super hot label PNKSLM to release the group’s next LP. Our first listen has us thinking along the lines of beach-goth stylings of Growlers, though this feels more centralized around melody; the usage of light “aahs” in the background provide a blanket of pop sensibility throughout the various verses. It’s energetic, and just a bit hazy, which is probably the way we’re all starting off our Friday. Look for Las Dunas to drop June 1st!

Poppy Surf from Delsbo Beach Club

Delsbo Beach Club are bringing in precisely what one would expect from the band’s name; they offer a poppy take on that Cali style beach vibe. Except, this group hails from Sweden, which is perhaps why there’s a dominating pop sensibility that runs throughout the tune. The vocals have a bit of distorted effect, which effectively encourages the ears to come closer to the speaker. With that, you’ll find a natural spring to your step created by delectable guitar notes. In the chorus there’s a slight turn away from the beach to a more intimate croon; it’s a swing of sorts, crafted in an indiepop manner. This single is full of promise, and it’s available now via Rama Lama Records.
