Enjoying This Proud Parents Tune

One of my favorite albums this year is the latest Spook School LP; having so many songwriters in one band really makes the whole listen refreshing. Why does that matter with Proud Parents? Well, the group employs a similar strategy, with three vocalists/songwriters helming the ship. On their new single that recently popped up, its clearly visible, trading verses/choruses with one another while guitar chords dance around the vocals and cymbals constantly crash through your speakers. There’s something innately catchy; the band just seem to be having a blast, and that grabs me. The band will release their debut for their new label, Dirtnap Records, later this year!

Jawbreaker Coming to Austin – 7/13/18

The experts in pulling our old favorite bands from yesteryear into Austin, Margin Walker, have done it yet again folks by bringing the legendary punk group Jawbreaker to Austin. That’s right, the same Jawbreaker who haven’t played a Texas show in over 20 years, and though “back together”, only play special performances. This is a huge deal for both myself and Nate dog as this is one of the bands we grew up with and one of the bands that first introduced us to non crap. As far as the show goes, the event will take place at the Statesman Skyline Theater and tickets will go on sale this Friday, May 4th at 10am. Tickets are being sold via Skyline Theater website and will run you $44 for GA and $99 for VIP. Support for the show will be from Lemuria and locals A Giant Dog. I am very excite.

UPDATE: We asked Margin Walker boss man Graham Williams for a quote about his booking of Jawbreaker in Austin. Here’s what he had to say:

“While a lot of us got to see Jawbreaker in the 90s, far more never got that chance, as they broke up while really in the rise as a band. I think everyone had given up on the chance of them reuniting, so when they did, its been a goal to get them to Texas and pretty stoked we finally made it happen for everyone.” –Graham Williams

Premiere: The Special Pillow Ready Sixth LP

The Special Pillow are about two decades into a storied career, which includes highlights like being covered by Yo La Tengo, or a feat accomplished by few: finishing their sixth album, Sleeping Weird. Our first listen to music from the LP comes via “Hudson River Dreamboat,” which offers up literary pop music swollen with incredible studio production. You’ll hear strings encircling the verses from the minute you press play, and the small horn section blasts emphatic joyousness throughout. You won’t be able to get away from the natural bounce crafted by a solid rhythm section, including founder Dan Cuddy on bass. If you’re missing well-crafted indie rock, then come back to us; we’re here with The Special Pillow, and you should join us. Look for the new album to drop July 29th.

Striking Track from Odina

Let’s get it out of the way, there’s an immediate comparison to Odina; yes, she does resemble early Joanna Newsom in her vocal delivery. But, for me, that’s where the comparison stops, and a new star shines. There’s this intimacy in her voice, almost as if we’re sitting right in the studio as she records this tune. It doesn’t hurt that the arrangements behind her are stunning, embellishing her notes with billowing horns that rise to meet her voice. This tune will appear on her forthcoming EP, which is scheduled to drop at some point this summer.

Michael Nau Announces New Album

Michael Nau had a pretty solid 2016 and 2017, and today with the announcement of his new album, it looks like he’ll be making big waves in 2018 as well. This time around, he’s chosen to work with his touring band for the recording process, dubbing them The Mighty Thread. Perhaps in the end, it will provide a hint more cohesiveness, but none of that will matter if the songs are as good as the one below. It’s weird, as at times it sounds like a folk-influenced take on modern indie rock, though Nau’s vocals here sound a lot like Brooks from the Growlers, giving it just this slight peak of sunlight..those are all good things by the way. I love the tinkering piano and constant jangle of the tambourine. Michael Nau and the Mighty Thread will be self-released on August 3rd.

Floating Room Announce New LP

It just takes a moment before you find yourself caught up in the swirling shoegaze tornado of Floating Room‘s new single. But, don’t get caught up in that musical cyclone, as the band are determined to craft a sensible pop undertone, primarily done through the vocal performance. The accompanying video takes the instrumental middling ground and turn them into a matching visual concept, moving the landscape images in step with the musical goings-on. False Baptism will be released by Good Cheer Records on June 22nd.

Business of Dreams Will Be In Austin Tomorrow (Show Preview)

Through the years of (probably annoying) fandom, we’ve managed to befriend Corey, who came on our radar via Magic Bullets and Terry Malts. Tomorrow night, he’ll be heading into Austin with his solo project, Business of Dreams. They’ll be the opening band for Rogue Wave over at Empire Control and Garage; you can grab tickets HERE. Even better news for me is it gives me a chance to share a stream of his self-titled LP that dropped late last year. The music of the evening will be better, and in Corey’s case, the company even better, so head out tomorrow night, doors are at 8 PM.

Enjoy This Sonny Elliott

Today, my head’s floating off into who knows where; I’m mentally drifting out the window of my classroom. Luckily, this Sonny Elliott tune has been in heavy rotation, matching the sentiment of my current state. There’s a fragility in the vocals, as if they could shatter in midair, crumbling to the floor. Guitars angle and turn behind you, wrapping you up in this blankety of dreamy warmth; it all has this sublime calm effect in the end. This track features on the forthcoming Under Covers EP, which the duo will unleash unto the world on May 25th.

The ACL Lineup Is Here

One of Austin’s favorite festivals has announced their 2018 Lineup. We already know that ACL Festival will happen on October 5-7 and October 12-14…but now we know what we’re getting! Personal highlights include David Byrne and Metallica/Deftones (I’ve recently been traveling down a secret metal wormhole with a lot of teenage reminiscence). A return of The National is never a bad thing, as they’ve delivered some of my favorite ACL moments in the past. B. Gray will be super stoked on Sylvan Esso and CHVRCHES. We’re also bound to love some of the acts lurking at the bottom of the list, like Sharon Van Etten, or my pick of the fest, Shame! If this whole thing is up your alley, then perhaps you’ll want to grab some tickets right HERE.

BGRAY NOTE: Post was staged before the full announce, let’s take a moment to react. The variation and diversity here is the best it has been in years. Sir Paul McCartney, Metallica, David Byrne, Twin Shadow, St Vincent, The Breeders, Blood Orange, Arctic Monkeys, Sharon Van Etten, Janelle Monae, Childish Gambino, Father John Misty – this is the best lineup on this side of the Atlantic. Get those three days now, cuz who knows if one-days will even be made available.

Show Pics: Panda Bear @ The Mohawk (4/27)

Levitation 2018 was not really a festival; it was a series of curated shows that happened to be on the same weekend. The environmental experience of marching across fields and pivoting from stage to stage was removed for ticketed shows at established venues. Hopefully, this will be a one time thing to keep the concept of Levitation alive. There was a time when it was the most unique fest going, whether in a power plant and by the river…

Anyway, when the lineup was announced, I was down for the deconstructed Animal Collective show with Panda Bear and Geologist at Mohawk. My interest increased when Lou Rebecca was added as an opener. It has been some time since our friends move out west to LA and there have been several mini-tours taken. How has the live set progressed and how do the new songs land?
