Nice Fuzz Rock From Sad Baxtar

It’s a little odd that we’ve never posted about Nashville based fuzz rock group Sad Baxtar in the past, but I plan to rectify that today. Here’s a single and video for the band’s new track “Believe Me” which you should be checking out now. It’s a very nice bit of grungy, sort of 90s throw back alternative rock with a gritty female lead vocal. I highly recommend you listen to this one right now.

Sad Baxtar will release a new EP entitled So Happy on July 20th via Cold Lunch Recordings.

Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton Return

It’s only been a few months since the debut from Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton, but they must have enjoyed the partnership quite a bit, as they already have a second record waiting for you. This picks up right where one would expect, though Lachlan takes the lead here on this number; he’s got this warm delivery that I always find intoxicating. Emma adds her voice to the chorus, proving the perfect accompaniment. I love how these two just sit in this homeostatic pop wonder world, not pushing anything to the extremes, only holding on to their pop penmanship. Keep on Trying is out on July 18th via Osborne Again Music.

Fresh Waves of Dread Track

Out of nowhere, Waves of Dread have slowly started making a name for themselves; they even opened for Os Mutantes without even having an LP to their name. On the latest single from the group, I really love the melodic underbelly that works throughout. Sure, the guitars brandish this heavy bravado, but the “oohs” that seemingly run throughout the entire track are sure to keep you in check. Loud, soft, whatever, this is just a great song you can put on repeat for the rest of today…and tomorrow too. Hoping the group continue this rise with a completed LP real soon!

Terry Is Back

Just the other day I was rambling on with Internet fans about the best bands coming out of Australia/New Zealand these last few years…and I know for a fact that Terry were mentioned. Well, clearly they were reading our online banter, as the group just announced a brand new LP…with a catch new track. Like many great acts from the region, the band here balance scuzzy noise with savory sugar pop antics. There’s a musical meandering that closes the song that’s so ominous, those who jump right to it will likely think they’ve found a punk gem. But, there’s bubbling bass lines and sing-along chorus work to thrill! The group release I’m Terry on August 30th via Upset the Rhythm.

Spend Some Time with Meritorio Records

Perhaps the greatest thing about running this site are all the obscure labels that have reached out that have either become friends or shown me the way to new music. Spain’s Meritorio Records is one such label, and they’ve had a pretty incredible 2018…so let’s reflect on that a little bit. March saw them release a great new Stephen’s Shore album, for those already familiar with one of indiepop’s finest. Then, they turned their attention to New York’s Holy Tunics, dropping Butter Dish; it’s al album brimming with guitar pop genius that you’ll revisit time and time again. Oh, and they’re not stopping, having just released the brand new LP from Poppel…seriously, just listen to this band! Hopefully, if you haven’t heard from Meritorio before, you’ll spend some time with their recent releases below.

Loving This New Exhalants Tune

While a great deal of what I’ve run lately has been on the poppier side of things, I’ve been mentally preparing for some good old rock n’ roll with Jawbreaker this Friday. So, it’s with great pleasure that I share this rad new rocker from Austin’s Exhalants…definitely got me in the mood. I love how there’s a slight melodic tone to the guitars at the start, while the artillery bursts of vocals from the distance adds a nice juxtaposition. There’s a natural heaviness in it too, especially with that ominous bass tone. Sounds old school, and yet ever present… a sign of something powerful coming our way soon; the band will release their self-titled debut via Self Sabotage on August 24h.

Uplifting Number from Summer Magic

Summer time brings Summer Magic! Summer Magic brings bright hook-laden pop tunes! I love exclamation points! So this song snuck into my head and it won’t leave. There’s something nostalgic that it brings up, especially when the vocals change slightly during the chorus…feels familiar like great pop songs do. Something from the snare work to the melody definitely recalls summer time, so the name’s definitely apt. This song will feature on the new album Sharks and Other Dangers, which will be available to the masses on August 31st. Go on, be a pop fan.

Another Great Dentist Tune

Not but more than a few weeks removed from their last hit, Dentist are back with another great pop number we can enjoy on Monday. It opens with a pounding snare and floor drum over a discordant guitar chord that seems to bound down the hallway before Emily enters the picture with her voice. I love how her delivery is calmed, almost matching syllables and drum beats; it gives a certain cadence to the tune. That sets up the delicious chorus, as infectious as ever. Night Swimming will drop on July 20th via Cleopatra Records…with an Austin date at Cheer Up Charlies just a week after the release!

Pleased to Meet You: Frontperson

Let’s get niceties out of the way; pleased to meet you, Frontperson. Wait! This band is Kathryn Calder and Mark Andrew Hamilton from Woodpigeon forging out as a unit? And Stereogum premiered their video over Kanye news!? Honestly, I’m just being a dick, but I really like this track. Even though the band features Kathryn from New Pornos, the tune seems to have this early Broken Social Scene feel…maybe it’s that underlying groove during the verses…regardless, it gives the song that hook. I also think Calder’s voice has this delicate sharpness that contrasts perfectly with Hamilton’s. Together the two will release Frontrunner on Oscar St. Records.

New Ty Segall and White Fence Single

Sometimes I think Ty Segall is too prolific for his own good, but when he’s joining up with Tim Presley aka White Fence, I can definitely get behind that. This track almost sounds like it’s acoustic punk filled with furious strumming, but you can hear the influence of Presley, particularly in the very post-punk yelps and the delivery of the first chorus. Don’t worry, you get a Ty-esque solo in the last seconds of the song, just to whet your appetite. Together, Ty Segall and White Fence will release Joy on July 20th via Drag City.
