Heavy Americana From Will Johnson

Nathan and I were just discussing some of the original bands we first posted about and have steadily shared over our 10+ year run. After a bit of poking around in older, and terribly formatted posts, our very own Austinite Will Johnson was featured quite a bit in the early days and frequently over the years. Bottom line, we love his music and everything he’s been involved in over the years. Currently Will is going under his own name again with a new album called Wire Mountain coming on September 27th via Keeled Scales. Prior to that new release date, we’ve got this new single “Necessitarianism (Fred Merkle’s Blues)” ready for your ever awaiting ears. It’s a familiar Johnson sound with his ever raspy, haunting vocals, but this time with more of dark, edgy sound to his ever evolving Americana style.

Durand Jones and the Indications Go Cruisin to the Park

There’s something special about Durand Jones & the Indications; they hit me on so many levels. One, they’re pretty much family approved at my house…I can jam with my wife, my soon-to-be 1 year old or my mom; that’s a really big deal over at our music obsessed household. But, there’s also this soulful vibe that most closely resembles some of that Motown era vibes, with just a hint of doc-wop ancestry. The band’s brand new single has this lightness, this breezy feeling blowing through your speakers; it’s an homage to lowrider culture that’s been so supportive of the band on their rise. I feel like any day’s a good day for Durand and company, so lets go cruising.

Pleased to Meet You: Inverted Jenny

Sometimes tracks don’t reach you right away, and this whole scene of endless scroll often encourages us to look away from good tunes in favor of one that’s next. Lucky for me, this Inverted Jenny tune is great no matter what way you look at it. Claire Epting looks to the Velvets and Mazzy Star for inspiration, but listening to the steady bounce of the percussion you can see the band’s work fitting nicely along any number of great pop acts from California. I gravitated towards the slightly fuzzy bend of the guitars here, which always do it for me. If you like what you hear, the Cosmic Crush EP is available now.

Have Another From The Berries

Another day, another fantastic Seattle band I am currently enamored with. Today my words and praise are focused on the previously posted about The Berries, who have yet another tune for us to enjoy. This one is called “Passing Scene” and treats us again to a beautiful bit of slow-brooding, American style sounds with just the right amount of brightness to keep things interesting. This is a band all of us will be talking about when new album Berryland drops on September 20th. Run for Cover has pre-orders up now.

Tincho Do It Again

Man I think this Seattle band Tincho is really doing something special right now and will likely be growing in fame over the coming months. The band’s soon to be released album, Home Today, will be looked upon as one of the best and most progressive full lengths of the year. Their sound takes old familiar indie rock sounds like Foreign Born or Beach Fossils, and then puts a more modern twist on things with a mature, yet energetic vibe. Don’t believe me? While you can’t get your hands on the full album just yet, today the band shared another single from the record called “Jet-Puffed Marshmallow”. It’s a stunner.

Home Today will be released on September 13th. Pre-orders are live now.

More From Secret Shame

After a few stellar songs coming my way, I am fully on board with the hype train behind Asheville based group Secret Shame. For me it’s been a welcome change from a lot of the garage rock style I post to more of a dark pop, gothic style. The band’s latest, entitled “Gift” can be found streaming below. It features the same dark, almost new wave sound with some dashes of the macabre.

Secret Shame will release new album Dark Synthetics on September 6th. Pre-order is live now.

Oscilla Shares Repeat Rerun

I’m guessing it’s because I’ve been hanging with 13 year olds all day (don’t be weird, I’m a teacher), but I’ve got an extra bit of pep in my step. This Oscilla tune is absolutely perfect for that mood, it only enhances today’s cheer. The whole tune is set to this steady roll of the snare layered atop a jumpy little piano line; atmospherics wash in and out, mostly wrapping the melody tighter around the track. Frances England, meanwhile, just has this voice that makes you feel like grabbing your best friends hand and bounding down the lane as sun sets; it’s joyous and thoughtful, and all the while familiar. Bet this track just made your day!

Upbeat Pop from Husbands

Oklahoma City has a special spot in my heart (90% of my friends live there), so when I find a band coming out of that town I can adore, I tend to swoon. So here I am with Husbands (who also spend some time in Seattle); they craft this bouncing sort of pop that seems perfect for the last days of Summer here. In fact, it kind of reminds me of early Drums or Generationals, driving these infectious hooks into your brain where you can’t escape…and suddenly you’re bouncing around the house having the time of your life. I don’t know about you, but Tuesday feels like a great day to sort of turn up some tunes, put on a grin and have a hell of a time.

Kaputt Share Carnage Hall

Glaswegian act Kaputt seem to have answered a call of sorts put forth to them by many a no-wave act, most recently with Bodega coming to mind. For starters, the band’s spinning their political sensibilities in this tightly manufactured no-punk. The title-track from their forthcoming release is filled with these saxophone skronks and feverish bounce that’s sure to get an audience up and about; this all leads to a riotous tension that seems to put the band and listener on edge, shooting off-kilter chords to a calamitous close. Just imagine a less-formulaic Parquet Courts and you’re in the ballpark here. Carnage Hall drops on September 27th via Upset the Rhythm.

Thoughtful Post-Punk from Shiny Darkly

Danish outfit Shiny Darkly most recently dropped their Bronze LP, but as of today, they’ve got something that seems most fitting of their band name. They’ve employed Sharin Foo of the Raveonettes to join in on the main vocal role in their new track; they craft this mesmerizing post-punk soundscape that draws in the listener rather than frighten them with squalls of beautiful guitars. The guitars are clean, working over what sounds like a digital drum loop; the vocals weave themselves around the negative space, creeping in with a slight curled pop billow during the chorus. A nice way to join in on your Monday, don’t ya think? This track will appear on the Crunchy Frog 25th Anniversary Compilation.
