Nana Grizol Share South Somewhere Else Title Track

One of the albums on my radar, is the forthcoming South Somewhere Else LP from Nana Grizol, and it seems like the album’s title track kind of slipped by me. On first listen, the song is really all about Theo Hilton’s steady vocal delivery; his voice seems to march in step with the chugging of the guitar lines with thematic references to the narrative of growing up in the South and finding your own footing. For me, however, I’m a sucker for arrangements, even the most obvious ones. Here, you get a fuzzy distorted guitar solo and blossoming horn arrangements fleshing things out; it’s like this joyous burst building buoyancy into fabric of the tune. The new LP will be out on June 19th via Arrowhawk Records/Don Giovanni.

Grand Union Share Killing Forest Video

We’ve covered Grand Union in the past, though it’s been a few years since we’ve heard from the Norwegian group; today they’ve got a brand new single to share with the world…and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for this morning. It’s this huge traditional power pop sound, fueled by dueling guitar parts and great melodic vocals that float on the top of the mix. Slight little mood changes in the chorus offer up just the slightest wrinkle, with the lyrical kind standing up defiantly against the killing frost; you even get a nice little guitar solo flare too, just so the band can flex their musical muscles. But, like all great pop songs, it gets out of its own way and closes in less than 3 minutes, leaving you refreshed, and perhaps, going back for more. Oh, and if you want another charmer, you should check the B-Side for this single HERE.

Haiku Hands Announce Debut Album

In 2019, Australian outfit Haiku Hands brought their choreographed dance party to our shores during SXSW (RIP); I know we were all impressed, and anxiously awaiting news of an LP. Well, that news dropped yesterday, and the band remind me a lot of CSS in a lot of ways. For one, they have these satisfying dance club hits that always seem to get stuck in your head; this is music for people that want to enjoy living. Two, they work as a collective, curating and exploring art amongst their members. I have a feeling this song would be huge had it dropped in different circumstances, but lets hope it brings you all a little joy. Their debut drops in August via Mad Decent.

Real Banger From Leeches

Only a couple of months ago I shared with you all a catchy as hell song called “Fuerta Ventura” from my new pals in Dorset based band LEECHES. Well now the boys are back with this banging new number called “Man Up”. It features a nice blend of a shoe gaze inspired sound which meanders in and out of some seriously heavy, seriously loud, sludge rock. I think you will find it quite enjoyable.

LEECHES are releasing a singles collection EP called Easy on July 3rd via Leisure Records.

Secret Shame Share New Single, Dissolve

The more I sit around at home, the more I just want to have fun with my music listening and my daughter…typically that means dancing about to various brands of post-punk in the living room. For me, that’s the highlight of this new Secret Shame track; you can hear the song steeped in the tradition from the moment that the jam kicks off…think of New Order with a dreamier twist on the vocals. I actually like it, giving off the perfect juxtaposition so the song doesn’t stray too far into homage territory. Just an energetic pop tune to make your day better; you’ll find this tune on the Dissolve/Pure 7″, out June 5th.

Walt Disco Share Cut Your Hair

Remember when you first listened to “Danger! High Voltage” by Electric Six? It was like all the garage rock energy had been filed into a dancefloor ready ball of fun. Well, Glaswegian outfit Walt Disco are aiming for similar territory with their latest single Cut Your Hair…only instead of garage rock, they’re channeling in that sort of angular post-punk that’s quite similar to other Glasgow natives Franz Ferdinand. Admittedly, this one’s a touch more dramatic, at least in the vocal delivery, though it also has a little bit more experimental twists in the musical element. Anyways, you should have fun on a Wednesday locked inside your home. The band have a debut EP scheduled for later this year, so keep your eyes peeled.

Rules Return with Wendy

Back at the beginning of this pandemic we were introduced to the literature-influenced synth pop act Rules; their first single was an homage to Haruki Murakami. This time round, they’re reimagining JM Barrie’s Wendy, telling the story through sparkling pop. I like how the shimmering synth work sort of hangs back; it definitely swells in your ears, but it doesn’t get int he way for the performance of Iiti Yli-Harja’s vocal performance. She comes in with a hint of 80s pop nostalgia coming across like a more rehearsed Tiffany; there’s just this extreme frivolity in her voice, and I can’t pull away. The group release their self-titled debut this August courtesy of Soliti Music.

Most Likely Drop Surprise Album

Sam Houdek is one of our favorite Austin musicians; he plays in all the bands you love and have loved (including ATH Records alum Growl)…most recently as a member of Why Bonnie. But, he’s also quietly been working on his own solo stuff as Most Likely, spending the last few years finishing up the various tunes that make up his debut self-titled LP. Some of the song’s we’ve been privy to previously, like standout jam “Steve,” but I definitely have found that “Corner” is one of the special tunes in this collection. It’s always great seeing someone you believe in drop something so wonderful, so spend a few minutes with Most Likely today.

Gary Olson Shares Some Advice

About a month ago we were treated to the first single from the forthcoming Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) LP, and now we’ve got another number, which might be even better than our first listen. Honestly, my first few runs through, I thought about how accessible his songwriting was, despite my tendency to claim indie superiority; it’s the sort of track that I could play for my mum and dad that would surely charm them. In the casual pop, you’ll find some really great arrangements working too, which seems to be the staple of a lot of the stuff Gary’s worked on as of late; I loved the horn section coming in just after the 3 minute mark…felt like a very B&S nod. The self-titled album is out on May 29th via Tapete Records.

Royal Target Share Sitting Alone

As I sit here alone on my couch, figured that its the perfect time to write about this great new track from Royal Target…oddly titled after my current situation. For me, while I’m sure we’re all relating to the sentiment, I think we can also find ourselves getting lost in the song itself. I love the way the guitars turn over and over, playing between that gentle jangle and circular pop swirl that’s so enticing. It almost has this subversive nature in its subtlety, creeping inside your brain and hitting all those emotional sensory notes that make a tune memorable. Surely you’ll enjoy.
