Hollow Graves Drop Far Out Summer

Phew, what a week/month it’s been for everyone here in the ATH offices. As we near the end of what seems like an endless 2020, it seems appropriate that I would seek comfort from our Canadian neighbors of the north. Offering me this comforting sound today is Toronto based outfit Hollow Graves and their bright and warm new tune called “Far Out Summer”. With shoegaze rooted in the core of the song, it can certainly be a bit hazy, but I’m loving that the band has really brightened things up bouncy guitars and an almost airy feel. It’s as though the Beach Boys wrote a popping shoegaze song.

Oscilla Share This Kind of Love

Oscilla is the new project Frances England, who just recorded her debut album with indie legend John Vanderslice. I wanted to start off Friday with this tune, kind of a mellow way to just get your pop feels really early. There’s a brightness to England’s voice that definitely matches up with the weather we’ve been getting in Texas, so it feels appropriate. The light vocal flourishes behind her only serve to lift the melody through the speakers. If you’re looking for a nice little folk pop twist to your Friday listening, then be sure to check this one out. You can also hear all of Everlasting early over HERE, though its not officially out on the streams!

Roseship Teahouse Share Summer Sleep Single

In just over a moth, Roseship Teahouse will be releasing their Fine EP, so they’ve offered us another exciting glimpse at what’s in store on the horizon. Rogers opens up the song, working their vocals over a careful keyboard line, soothing your eardrums with phenomenal melodic notes. Just as the one minute mark ticks, the band joins Rogers, building in this texture with guitar notes that match the keyboards, along with some subtle drumming; Rogers still seals the show, but those added touches make it much more of a group affair. The full Fine EP will be out on December 9th via Big Indie Records.

Public Body Share Table Manners

I’ll go out and say that sometimes I feel like the whole post-punk guitar organization has gotten stale, but there’s a few outfits that still manage to turn me on, musically. Public Body is one such act, as they seem to kind of pull in some extra flare that kind of moves them out of that traditional formula. For me, some of their angular guitar work really catches me ear, akin to acts like Omni (who I adore), but even further into art punk at times. Plus, they never deliver you that expected climactic punch, at least not in this format; they tend to deliver more of a meditative rock sermon, just holding you long enough to get you through the track before letting you venture off into the world a new human.

A New Single from My Darling YOU!

Just yesterday we shared a new track from Strawberry Whiplash off their latest single from Matinee Recordings. But, while investigating that bit of pop joy, we also noticed the label had another quick pop single to share, that of My Darling YOU!. The Swedish duo will be releasing a brand new 20 track record tiled A Dream Come True this December, and they’ve opted to share this quick little burst of pop joy to throw right in your face. It hits you fast and hard, throwing up this sense of joyousness in an emphatic fashion. The tune bursts, charms and then fades away. Just imagine what they’ll be able to do with 20 tracks!

Ciel Share All My Life

When Ciel dropped their Movement EP back in April, I was pretty awestruck; I played “The Shore” on repeat for weeks on end. They return today with a brand new track, drawing from similar territory, though raising the bar on their own sweetened brand of dream pop. Things start off as you’d expect, nice thick rhythm and softened vocals. But, the change in attitude at the 45 second mark indicates that the band intend to go huge on their new wave of songs; this is still dreamy, but they’re not burying any hooks here…just the opposite. Probably going to have this tune stuck in my head for a bit…how about you?

Eades Deliver Another Hit

Our pals in Leeds based band Eades have been hard at work this past year having released several singles and their impressive debut EP, Microcosmic Things. Though it’s been a creative and productive year for the group, they aren’t quite done yet with this new single called “Forgive my Mind” coming out today via Bam Bam Records. It is yet again a display of true slacker rock but with super tight instrumentation, interesting guitar leads, and the always steady rhythm section. If you don’t know about the band, you should check them out now.

Strawberry Whiplash Return with Press 4 for Love

It’s been nearly five years since we last heard from Strawberry Whiplash, but I have a feeling all those indiepop folks out there are going to be clamoring for more. Almost immediately, those crisp guitar notes turn from slight jangle to pace-car, locking the song in this bounding rhythm, occasionally broken up by the return of those crystalline guitar notes. Still, the song wouldn’t be complete without those melodic vocal notes that bring us back to the sugary pop of the early days of rock n’ roll. For some reason, this song just makes me feel like running about on a playground with a giant lollipop in my mouth! Sweet and fun. The digital single is available via Matinee Recordings. And, word is, this single is signs of new things to come, with a fresh LP promised for the new year!

Dandy Boy Records Release Television Personalities Tribute Comp

Despite a horrible toll on our souls and families, there have been some minimal bright spots in the art world, like friends working together to organize compilations. Last week Dandy Boy Records dropped this incredible Television Personalities Tribute. Not only does the album pay homage to one of my favorite bands, but its filled with artists we’ve covered countless times. As I write this I’m jamming to Jeanines cover “Jackanory Story,” but of course it never hurts to hear the “Silly Girl” cover by Friendless Summer. Plus, you get our friend RE Seraphin, So Cow, and Odd Hope (recent single via Slumberland Records). I could go on and on with all the great tunes, or I could just leave Mummy Mummy Please Look at Me below for you to enjoy today!

Henrik Appel Shares Another Wake Me Up

One time, I threw a show, and Henrik Appel played a nice little set. As he was jamming, I was like damn, he’s got some power for a one man show. In listening to this latest single from the forthcoming Humanity LP, you get that same feeling; he’s able to build what seems like a huge sound, though still woven in simplicity. Appel opens with a solid riff, almost muted in its presentation, ringing just barely behind Henrik’s voice. Soon, he’s joined by Emma Lind, who lends her voice to several tracks on the LP; she builds this nice contrast, texturing the song to craft that larger than life sound. Saxophone shouts come in near the song’s close, furthering the sonic exploration we’ve heard from the record thus far. Stoked to hear Humanity in its entirety; it drops via PNKSLM on January 8th.
